Actually ... that response makes more sense than you think. It's the fact that Anubis was even ABLE to abduct Thor that made them so much more restrained. They'd never faced a Goa'uld who could hold his own against them, and Anubis did more than hold his own.

They had the numbers advantage but were the ships actually superior or were they just bluffing.

We can only speculate, but those new ships were made to fight the replicators, so i assume they are an substantial upgrade. Just to point out an huge Asgard feat, they developed weapons that did easily dispatch Ori battleships. In my headcanon Oneill class could fight and win against those upgraded Anubis motherships one on one.

@@StormTiberius In reality, their ships are better, we see it later just with the shields of Earth's ships that are superior to the past fleet of Anubis. But it was the very first "meeting" between the Asgard and Anubis' ships, and Anubis basically destroyed a Beliskner. Prudence was wiser.

Well the thing is cause they were so busy fighting the Replicators at the time is they were relying on the threat of them to keep the Gou'ld relatively in line, it was probably deemed too big a risk (even as a 'reminder' to the Gou'ld of their power) to destroy a System Lord's ship and potentially provoke a war that'd see lots of Protected Planets overrun because the Asgard couldn't defend them.

@@MLaak86 The thing is that the Asgard were aware of how the System Lord's operate. When you kill one, there is usual a scramble by other System Lords to claim their resources and territory. In one sense that would benefit the Asgard and the protected worlds since it would keep them occupied for a while. There were some complications, though. For one, they may have known that they couldn't actually kill Anubis. Even if they didn't know, they were now aware that Anubis had been incorporating advanced technologies into his ships that made them rival Asgard ships. In a scramble among the System Lords, it is possible for multiple System Lords to end up with those technologies which would be worse than just Anubis having it. The real issue, in my opinion, was that the Asgard were not confident they would win even with the more advanced ships. It is better to bluff about the capabilities of their advanced ships and maintain the assumption of technological superiority than to risk an attack and have that assumption challenged.

@@curtisshaw1370 they would've definitely won, even 1 on 1. The asgard tech could rival ancient tech in many areas. It's just that they didn't want to provoke a war with Anubis since their resources were so thin and the wraiths proved that superior numbers can crush superior tech. Since Anubis had never seen the O'Neill ships, it was a good reminder to him that Asgards were advancing their tech too and that the old Bilskirnir ship was not an indicator of their current technological level. Since the Asgards live in a galaxy far away, the goa'ulds had never really witnessed their true power. That's why Anubis thought that if he could defeat a Bilskirnir, he could defeat the asgard. We know that ascended beings aren't omniscient or omnipresent. Anubis couldn't have instantly travelled to the asgard galaxy to spy on them. That's why he got scared when he saw these new ships and desperately wanted Thor's knowledge. Cause he knew that the asgard tech was still superior to the knowledge he acquired from the ancients (he didn't gain all of the knowledge of the ancient when he ascended, their knowledge is kinda "coded"). Since Asgard hyperdrives are so fast, these ships probably left their battle with the replicators for a few hours to scare Anubis away and then went back to fight.

@@Beyllion their ships are far superior but they were not sure of that at that time. If they had been, Thor wouldn't have gone with a random Beliskner. All they knew was that the Goa'uld made a sudden jump into advanced technology that could rivale at the very lest with their old classic technology. That calls for prudence.

And their hyperdrives can travel insanely fast. Goauld ships can’t travel in between galaxies like Asgard ships, but they can still travel much faster than many other ships in other sci-fi franchises.

Nope. Anubis was planning to challenge the Asgard with his upgraded technology. They needed to show their power and give him a warning. Bringing 3 ships basically meant "we may be busy with the replicators but we can still beat your ass anytime Anubis"

@@removefromme Whelp, the Nox didn't screw up their own physiology through several centuries of cloning so my money is in #3 at best. The Nox probably could have fixed their degenerative condition but obviously didn't want to be associated with them.

In addition to the other reasons mentioned, destroying the ship without "proper cause" could very easily lead to a war with the Goa'uld that the Asgard don't have the resources to fight.

@@BigZ282 Yep, most Asgard strength at the time was tied up fighting the Replicators, hence why Thor was sent with a relatively low level ship as opposed to one of these, never mind 3.

He did, Thor started having fun in the ships system and Anubis fled from the ship. Thor stayed and was rescued pretty soon after

Thor managed to get Anubis and his Jaffa to abandon the ship, after which he piloted it towards Earth where he knew the SGC would salvage it and possibly rescue his consciousness so his fellow Asgard can transfer it into a new body

@@spasjtIf you ever listened to a private interview with Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner the writers of SG1 on what inspired them to create the series you find out that while having their obvious Egyptian appearance the Goa'uld are in fact based off Muslim history. And the same applies for the Ori and their intergalactic crusade is based off Christianity in the same way. I always thought of this show as a covert warning of the dangers of a empowered religion.
