This video is about Anxiety and ectopics: The Missing Link
Here i tell you exactly why anxiety causes heart palpitations, ectopics and pvc. if you'd like to speak with me please visit my website: www.yorkcardiology.co.uk and my Facebook is yorkcardiology@gmail.com
Today i think i have discovered what could be the missing link:
Today i found this really interesting paper by Hafen et al in the Clinical Science Journal published in 1996
These guys took 8 healthy men and measured their ionised magnesium levels/ total magnesium levels at rest and after 30 minutes of hyperventilation where they were breathing at 20/minute and then they got these patients to breath normally again
So the findings were
1. The average heart rate went up by 13/min (but in some people by unto 41/min)
2. All of them developed tingling and numbness in their hands
3. 4 developed numbness in their legs
4. 5 developed spasm of their hands
5. 2 complain of lightheadedness
6. Carbon dioxide levels in their blood fell
7. Total magnesium concentration stayed the same
8. but the ionised magnesium concentration fell significantly and remained low for 30 minutes after hyperventilation
And this may well be the reason ectopics go up when people feel stressed and this would then explain firstly why the breathing exercises work and secondly why taking magnesium helps with ectopics in about 90% of patients i meet.

You are from heaven!!! Thank you SO MUCH. As nice as it is to go to the doctor and hear "You're fine, go home", that doesn't make me feel much better when I'm lying in bed at night feeling PVCs and freaking out. Understanding WHY these are happening to me is such a powerful method of calming myself back down. I am one of the people who feel every PVC (which feels like a curse, my father in law has thousands a day and feels none!) and you have helped me to retrain my brain when they happen so I can say "Look, this is just your stomach acting up again, you know it is the vagus nerve connection", and I can settle myself back down much more quickly now. The truth shall set you free! God bless you! Much thanks from Missouri, USA.

Whenever I get a skipped heartbeat, I become really anxious and the vicious circle of skipped heartbeats and anxiety starts. I try to think about different things just to take my mind off that but it rarely works. But since I have been going through your youtube videos, they sort of work for me just like a medicine and I am so thankful to you for that.Your explanations are so much reassuring. Dr. Gupta explained that when we are at rest, our heart rate goes down. That gives our heart more time between beats for ectopics. When we are moving and exercising there is less time between heart beats and less time for ectopics to form. That really helped me..

This is exactly what's happening with me and my anxiety. I feel ever beat from the heart and pay extra attention to the rhythm and worry something can go wrong. On another note, I get extra paranoid about any sensations coming from the upper chest area. Regardless of what that sensation is or where it's coming from, as long as it's from the body area, it triggers my anxiety. And then it goes int a loop. Sensation-anxiety-more sensation-more anxiety. It sucks. Here's a question no one seems to know how to answer. Is it the sensations that cause the anxiety or is it the anxiety that came first and created the sensations? Which ever comes first, it's just a horrible feeling.

Nothing has helped me more than learning to take slow (not too deep) breaths, and learning to completely relax when exhaling. There's a real reaction from the parasympathetic nervous system when your breathing is relaxed which helped me a lot. If I don't make the effort to relax my breathing like this, I feel my pulse MUCH more, alcohol has a MUCH more negative impact on my rhythm, I feel palpitations much more often and my sleep suffers a lot. Trust me guys, make the effort, its worth it. There's way too much bad advice or incomplete advice out there in regards to breathing exercises. The missing piece is that they never talk about how to "relax your breathing" when you're generally an anxious person. In my case, I tend to carry tension in my lower abdomen, lower back and glutes. Having tensions in these areas makes it IMPOSSIBLE to actually have a relaxed, slow breath, and also a relaxing slow exhalation. Pay attention to where you carry your tension, learn what it feels like to completely relax those areas of your body, then practice keeping those muscles relaxed ALL THE TIME. I've always been very consistent with working out, but have had a small gut as a lot of others do, which led me to subconsciously keep my abs a little tight as not to show that. This is a really bad habit and must be broken first-thing if you're going to even begin to try and keep your breaths natural. When breathing in, imagine the breath filling your abdomen all the way to the bottom (above your groin). Imagine your rib cage expanding in the back, a full 360 degree expansion, but not too sudden, slowly and light. This will make sure your diaphragm can expand as its more of a mental exercise to help you relax. If you cannot easily and slowly breath this way, read above and narrow down exactly which muscles are tense and keeping you from controlling your breaths. When exhaling, don't push the air out, but rather COMPLETELY relax your muscles and let your diaphragm contract on its own. This empties the lungs slowly ands allows the bohr effect to take place and rebalance your carbon/oxygen levels. This comment has gotten kinda long, but if you're going to take anything away from it, really make the effort to understand your muscular tensions. Most of us here are generally anxious to some extent and most likely carry these tensions. Understand them, learn how to relax them and then be absolutely mental about erasing them. You have to constantly be aware of them until they are no longer habits. Habits are hard to break, but not impossible, put the work in and you'll thank yourself later. Another thing I've learned is from studying some of the Buteyko breathing techniques is how important it is to breath in slowly via the nose. Breathing through the mouth is usually faster and leads to chronic hyperventilation, but another little nugget of info is the fact that your nasal passages produce nitric oxide, which is a vasodilator that can help reduce your blood pressure and heart beat just in itself. If you have trouble breathing through your nose because of trauma, or stuffed up from allergies etc, deal with this as soon as possible as it will really help with your quality of life. Consider a neti-pot which might open up your nasal passages and keep them clean and allergen free for a little while. I'm not a doctor, I'm a programmer, so don't take any of this as any kind of medical advice. I'm just a overly analytical person who has spent a lot of time trying to understand why I feel the way I do, and keep a mental journal of how things make me feel and what works/doesn't.
@LisaIrby
@LisaIrby 5 жыл бұрын
Nick this is excellent advice and I've also found that when I'm feeling anxious I often breathe with shallow breaths. If I slow down and lengthen my exhale, it does calm me down. I also carry my tension in my abdomen and low back and I notice if I'm feeling anxious that I'm most tense there. I am like you and have done lots of research (I'm analytical too) and I think poor breathing habits for years just fuels any anxiety I may have.

I thankfully figured this out for myself. I figured it out through sort of shameful means, I was dabbling with hard drugs, particularly MDMA and LSD and heard that Magnesium could lessen the muscle tension from said substances, I figured if it can help quell such acute tension, surely it has some uses in someone with normal tension - I tried it and low and behold, most of my physical anxiety symptoms died off, now i've started taking D3, zinc, fish oils etc. and i've come out of the depression I was in and my anxiety is lessening, but the magnesium started it all off. Having said that, this video really give me even more faith in the beautiful mineral. Your video's are always so reassuring and full of genuine, honest facts and no BS. It's so sorely needed for Professionals like yourself to reach out to people in such a friendly, informative way. It means a hell of a lot, at least to me but I imagine everyone here as well. Please keep up the great work and if you ever decide to stop, thanks for the video's you've made so far!

Thank you so very much for the information you give us. I suffer with uncontrolled epilepsy and I had a missed beat now and then and was told that it was not dangerous and that drinking too much coffee can course it. I now no longer drink coffee and the missed beat has gone. I do know that because of my epilepsy my anxiety was very high at times, after having a few years of counciling my anxiety is more in control.

I have health anxiety and more specifically cardiophobia, I’ve become very inactive because of a couple of chronic health issues but ultimately it’s the fear of a cardiac event. At 32 it doesn’t make me feel very good that I’m trapped by this fear, I’m considering private cardiology tests because I can’t seem to trust my previous tests and various doctors and nurses. I ask for further testing but my requests are denied which just feeds the fear. This video is helpful at least in the short term while my anxiety is in rational resting mode. I would have to save to be able to afford a consultation but these videos will hopefully help

I have never felt this in my life ever, until. 2 weeks after my very first surgery... csection. Since then I have experienced this 3 times since In the last 8 weeks. I was took to hospital the very first time I felt this as I panicked that much I was breathless, hospital sent me home and told me to speak gp about a 24 hours ecg. I suffer with anxiety so much and do feel this isn’t helping me . Your video has made me feel so much better as I constantly fear I am going to die any minute I’m only 24 years old . X

"oh, it's benign, don't worry about it" EXACTLY what my cardiologist said. I think I love you. ;-)

I wish I lived in the UK so I could visit you. I want a cardiologist that seems to care. Just the fact that you take time out of your schedule to do these videos means a lot. I have ectopic beats along with my POTS but I just hate they way they feel and can't become unafraid. My cardiologist always just says "they're just annoying" . Not very helpful for me.
