The 2 most important questions to ask and answer if you have ectopic heart beats

A lot of my work involves talking to and reassuring people who suffer from ectopic heart beats which seem to cause a tonne of anxiety and really seem to have a negative impact on quality of life.
Most patients I have spoken to have already seen a doctor for them and the doctor has told them that they are not dangerous but for may this reassurance is seldom enough.
The anxious mind needs more than that cursory pat on the shoulder. Part of the reason I think is that when ectopic beats are felt they are uncomfortable and scary and the anxious mind starts asking all sorts of questions - some rational and others irrational. The poor patient goes looking for answers and eventually ends up scouring the internet and ending up even more confused and terrified. In this video, I wanted to help reassure patients by helping them ask and answer some rational question about ectopic heart beats.
If we think rationally, ectopic heart beats are only really important for 2 reasons:
1) They may be a sign of something wrong with the heart and therefore they may represent some sort of warning that something bad may happen in the future - so a useful analogy would be that ectopic beats are like baby snakes and you are worried that there may be a mother snake waiting to bite nearby
2) The ectopic beats in themselves are causing the heart and the patient some form of damage - ok so there is no mother snake nearby but could the baby snakes bite?
So once you have answered those 2 questions, you can be reliably reassured that no harm will befall you and often that reassurance can go a long way to getting rid of them.
Thank you so much for listening and watching. I would love to know what you thought of this video. I am planning to do a live facebook chat later tonight so if you have any questions you want me to answer, please join me for the facebook chat by typing in @yorkcardiologist in your facebook search bar. I will also post a transcript of this video on my website www.drsanjayguptacardiologist.com

Ectopics have ruined the last 20 years of my life, and continue to since they seem to be getting more frequent. That being said, Dr Gupta is literally THE only reassurance I’ve ever had about this very specific condition. And the fact that he freely gives this information especially via free web-chats is just astounding. God bless this man 10x over 😭

If you cannot find the trigger(s) - mine is black mold, why not look into ablation? Also, look at histamine, insulin, and inflammation, food/all allergies, change environment, pets. If you're in the US, find a functional medicine doctor.

He says he does not know how it feels and that's why he wants to try to understand his patients better; he has real empathy as well as intellectual curiosity about his patients' experiences and how best to help them. This is what makes him different from most cardiologists and most doctors in general in my opinion.

I had AFIB when I was 35 years old. My Cardiologist told me I had PVC and it was normal and not to worry. Never told me anything else. After years of asking for more info, asking questions of my own docs, getting referrals, and doing research, I have just learned more about it in the last 60 minutes after discovering Dr. Gupta's videos. Thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart. All I needed (and have needed for the past 5 years) is an explanation of WHAT it is and WHY I shouldn't stress myself out everyday over it. Thank you so much!

I had my wife watch just the first couple of minutes of this video to show her how empathetic you were towards your patients, and how if more doctors were like you most of us wouldn't have the fear we have of going to see the doctor, and would consequently see our GP more often and live much longer and happier as a result. I wish you were my cardiologist!!

Two years ago I ended up in A&E with ectopic heartbeats. This channel was the first place I really got any answers and reassurance. Two years later after numerous tests, with stress and anxiety management, taking magnesium everyday and with more exercise - my ectopics are far less but more importantly I don’t freak out when they do happen. That’s been the biggest change. They were taking over my life. I’ve taken that back from them. Keep up the great work with your videos 👍🏻

Hi, glad to hear you are feeling much better! I was wondering what specific Magnesium and how much are you taking? Also what type of stress and anxiety management do you practice? I take Magnesium Glycinate about 250mg but haven't taken it for long to know if it's truly helping. Hope to hear back!
@Xrakes
@Xrakes 4 жыл бұрын
Marybeth Moreno hi there. I started off taking Magnesium Taurate and that certainly helped. I’ve changed though to a MAG365 which is power format and can be made into a hot drink before bed. This seems easier on my system. In terms of quantity, I believe it’s approx 150mg per day which around 40% daily recommended. This works for me. I found that taking a higher dosage caused my leg muscles to twitch (strangely). For anxiety, which really only happened after I got panic attacks during ectopic episodes, I downloaded a popular app for relaxation. It helped going to sleep and walking the routes where I had the panic attacks. It found it invaluable. And obviously talking about what was happening with friends and family also helped. Explaining that it wasn’t just in my head. These were real and they freaked me out. Badly. Now I understand they are not dangerous. I accept when they happen and that they will happen most likely again. Accepting it seems to have helped and they rarely happen these days. So all in all, try not to panic. I did and it took over. It fed into a cycle of ectopics. The more I worried the worse they got, and the more I worried. I’m back on the right track now. The futures bright. Hope that helped.

@@Xrakes Thank you so much for the insight. It's a relief talking to someone who has them also. I just started experiencing these pvc's about two weeks ago. It's been a really rough time because of the fear of unknown, I've gone to the ER twice. I even had to take some time off from work because of the anxiety it's causing me. Luckily I have a good support system (family, therapist, etc.) and Dr. Gupta has been a God send for me. The past few days have been getting better, less anxiety and panic episodes. For the past few days I have been taking Mag Glycinate (powder form)about 250mg daily, potassium 99mg, Omega 3 oil, B complex (for emotional support) and also a high grade multi vitamin. I also cut out fast foods, sodas, caffeine and not all but a lot of sugar intake. I had all my test come back normal and have a healthy heart while at hospital. I'm currently waiting to send off my two week heart monitor for results and talk with cardiologist further. I honestly think it is linked to my eating habits and anxiety/stress because when I am calm I don't feel them as much. I do feel them more in certain positions like when I 'm sitting in a car. Which sucks cause my job is driving an 18 wheeler. Ugh! Why me?? I guess the faster I realize they are harmless the better quality of life I will have. Again thanks for the info! 😊
@Xrakes
@Xrakes 4 жыл бұрын
Marybeth Moreno well for what it’s worth. I similarly ended up in A&E twice and yes my ectopics are linked mainly to stress and anxiety. The good thing is that once you know that, and all your tests are clear, then you can focus on managing your stress/anxiety. Just don’t let that fear take hold. If you can do that then there’s certainly light at the end of the tunnel. All I can say is it’ll get better. The internet is a bad place to seek knowledge but this channel is the exception. You’re off to a good start. Best of luck and health!

I am having ectopic beats for almost a year, my doctors said that it's definitely not the heart and I need to find what causes them. I have had so many theories and my heart has always acted like I was right (like when I thought that it's related to my stomach somehow and I've got them right after I ate or when I was really hungry) until I visited the doctor to prove my theory. It always appeared that I was healthy and it could not cause ectopic beats, and right after the news they always started to behave differently (but I have had them every day in different quantities: some days 4-10, some days probably more then 10000). Until I finally came to the conclusion that it is stress related. Then I have had almost a week with no ectopic heartbeats for the first time in 6 month.. And I have felt them only in stress related situations since then. Who knows, maybe some day I can make them totally disappear (or almost).

This is so reassuring instead of making us feel like we’re imagining it all as most Dr’s have made me feel all my life. In order to deal with it alone I have pretty much come to the conclusion that ‘It hasn’t killed me after all these years therefore it’s best ignored’ and that has helped me not worry however the strong pains still take my breath away so your reassurance that if it temporary it’s unlikely to be doing any damage is very helpful. Seeing cardiologist tomorrow for Echo results so if she says all good, I’ll feel a lot more reassured too after your explanation of what they look for in an echo 👍🏻 Thank you for taking the time to make these videos - much appreciated.

Hi Dr. I had what I thought were some basic, anxiety created chest pain. GP sent me off to see a cardiologist. Cardiologist said it's nothing, but that I needed a stress test to be sure. I did that, and it showed an abnormality indicative of having a blocked coronary. That led to a CTCA scan, which then showed an apparent 100% blocked coronary, leading to an angiogram. Despite all that I felt physically fit and well. Other than now extreme anxiety. The angiogram was done, which then showed my arteries were perfectly fine. It was the most anxious and crap experience of my life. Watching your videos during that time was very reassuring, and very informative to me during that experience.They all corroborated my hope that I had nothing going on, and eased some of the anxiety during that time. So many thanks for your videos, and keep up all the good work!

Dr. Gupta, you are a gift to us all. Your expertise is matched only by your compassion and empathy. Oh, how I wish we had cardiologists within the purview of most Americans. I had a nuclear stress test after I had a CAC scan with a score of 492. My cardiologist never called about the nuclear stress test. When I called, the receptionist told me “everything is fine.” The cardiologist , although he did not speak to me or explain anything, threw another 10 mg pill of Amlodipine at me. This means 20 milligrams of Amlodipine. No one cares. I’m simply a cog in the wheel. Very disconcerting. Very recently , I discovered your videos. They not only impart the knowledge we need but also provide a comforting and reassuring approach. Thank you. I know my words are not chronologically cogent with life but please accept my condolences for the loss of your father.

Thank you for all the information you are offering on your channel. It is very helpful. I wanted to ask as someone who gets skipped beats after having a cryoablation for arrhythmia I tend to avoid exercise as having my heart pump faster seems to give me more anxiety to getting skipped beats. I wonder if you could talk about this in a future video? Keep up the great videos.

I'm glad to see how much your channel grew in a year Dr. Been here since 2k subs, now almost 100k. Goes to show that ectopics is something a lot of people crave for answers about. Went back and forth on the idea of consulting you but never had the courage to do it. Applied all your advices and now i only feel ectopics 2-3 times a day. I think cycling 25km every 2 days is what helped the most. But i still worry when i get them. I might mail you my Holter and stress test results if you're still open to that kind of thing 😊

@Danaos I notice it’s when I relax as well. Especially if I sit or lay down quickly, like basically falling back into a chair or on a pillow, then I will notice some odd things. I’ve had 2 holters, one for two weeks, now I have a loop recorder. I’ve had an echo as well and it only showed a mild leak in 2 valves. But so far nothing my doctor has any concern over. Basically they all say that, in my case, it’s likely nerves/stress/anxiety. It’s hard not to be scared when you feel such things though.

@@nathanh3373 What i understand after years of reading up, listening to Dr Gupta and others i thing it all has to do with the vagus nerve. Ectopics in my case always come after sitting down, laying down, eating or just before having a big fart coming up, all situations that can press the vagus nerve, so that's the best explanation i can muster. Why do some people feel ectopics and others dont i guess it's because of different vagus nerve positioning or pressure or twisting, i dunno. That's what i tell myself anyway nowdays to forget about it 😋

Dr Sanjay - This is the second time you have reduced my anxiety... The last time was re: blood pressure numbers... I am now less anxious when 'in the middle of the night' I can feel my heart skip a beat and then follow up with several beats in a second... Thank you... No Mother Snake - lol

The only doctor who relieved my anxiety to some extent about ectopics. Thank you. I try to avoid ectopics by strictly following suitable diet and work/rest balance or changing body position and doing breathing exercises when it comes to it. I would not ignore them as occasionally one becomes a few, then series and then atrial fibrillation might kick in. This is after having ablation procedure more than year ago. Better than measures mentioned above are regular mindfulness exercises and practice helps most.

Denis , I wonder how you are doing now ? I had an Ablation for AFib in June and since then horrible ectopics each day / PVCs and also some PACs . I’m taking the magnesium but no improvement . I’m reassured by dr Gupta and I am very happy with my cardiologist too

@@margaretbinns3134 I had a second ablation 2 months ago. Something they missed first time. Still on medication, ectopics now and then, but the result will be clear only after coming off medication in January. Also I have to mention recent discovery. It became obvious that carbs in my diet were killing me and I had no choice but go into keto diet. Changes so far are promising in only two-three weeks. The time will tell. Mindfulness practice still work very well, especially in the middle of night if mind goes in to panic mode due to past experiences. Mindfulness enables me to distinguish between what mind tells me and what is perceived in reality. Usually reality is: everything is within normal range and ectopics now and then is normal too. Hope this helps. Thank you ☺️

@@margaretbinns3134 Sorry, I feel I need to mention this in addition for more complete picture as I really feel for people who go through similar experience to mine.: At age of 54, AF was not my only health issue. Massive difficulties with digestive system, long periods of dizziness, mid and upper back muscle problems resulting in difficulty to sit or stand for considerable amounts of time. No specialist could pinpoint the problem, so, no treatment for that. In light of this I came to believe that AF, ectopics and other heart rhythm issues are activated by other processes in body, since above mentioned are paroxysmal, not happening all the time. Therefore it would be important to find something that helps specifically for you.. And this is no simple matter. Out there are tons of information that can be not suitable in your case. Also, capability to think clearly and distinguish is reduced by declining body condition in general. To overcome this a great deal of mindfulness would help. Mindfulness extends to understanding that if I fail to correct things: it's Ok too. I emphasize mindfulness as the key. No person is same and only you can see what is going on inside and what suggestions to apply learned from others. Hope you find your solution. Best. Denis

I appreciate your videos so much. You have reassured me greatly. I have had fluttering maybe once a year for years, but since last October they have become much more frequent along with me slowing down and experiencing dizziness at times during my 3.5-4 mile morning walks. This concerns me, but I have not really been in a panic about it. I had an EKG that was fine, I just got results of 48 hour holter monitor during which I only had two mild flutters, but an hour after taking it off a had a big one. Doesn't that just figure. LOL It showed the two flutters as Premature Atrial Beats, which from your videos I realize are not something to really worry about. When it started I thought maybe it was my slightly leaky valves had gotten worse, or that I inherited Wolfe Parkinson White from my mother, or I was going to have a heart attack like my dad and need bypass like him, or that I had an enlarged heart like my grandmother. Like you have said, we do start to worry about everything. I'm grateful for what you do here because it has helped me to understand this better and relieve the concerns, even with my family history. Keep up the great work. I appreciate you so much.

Thank you. I have had ectopics for 10-15 years and any episode where they happen remains scary. I''ve had ECGs, holter monitoring, stress tests and echo cardiogram and have passed all with flying colors. I'll refer to your other video where it's mostly the fear (unfounded in my case) that makes it so much worse than it has to be.

Thank you, doctor. I have had all kinds of heart issues over the past 15 years. I'm 44 now. I think it all comes down to anxiety because I've had calcium tests, stress tests, device-wearing tests, echocardiograms, etc. They never found anything, but I've had heart pains, ectopic beats, and all kinds of stuff through the years. Need stress management.

I’ve learned more about my ectopic beats from your videos than from any cardiologist. In fact, they never even mentioned the ectopics other than listing them in the report. I was just told to do whatever I wanted without restriction.

Thank you so much for this reassuring video. I have just been told that I have an extra systolic ventricula beat. I am 71. My heart does flutter occasionally and it’s never bothered me. I am reasonably healthy. I walk my dog three times a day and I eat healthily MOST of the time😳. I have to go for the further tests as per your description. The only time it seems to happen, or be noticeable is if I have had some alcohol. I used to like a glass of wine or two, but the fluttering of my heart and the after effects make me feel so rotten that I stopped having any wine. To be honest I don’t miss it at all.
