In this video, Dr. May discusses the insecure attachment style known as anxious-ambivalent (or preoccupied, in adulthood). She discusses typical the cognitive style seen in people with insecure attachment and discusses the dynamics of anxious-ambivalent relationships in childhood and adulthood. At the end, she discusses tips for moving from anxious-ambivalent attachment toward an "earned secure" attachment.

This was pure gold. It also seemed to me to be a lot similar to covert/vulnerable narcissists’ behaviour.

I was diagnosed with BPD about two years ago and have been working on my recovery since. CBT and DBT helped me find some solid footing but recently I’ve came up on a block and didn’t know how to move past it. I started getting super into jungian psychology which ended up leading me to work on integrating the different aspects of my psyche. Once I started learning about the animu/s I thought “well damn if I’m able to wed my animu I can really start doing some serious integration work”. That brought me to attachment theory which brought me to your video where you ended up talking about BPD. I love it when the puzzle pieces start coming together. as soon as you brought up BPD I got a great laugh. Thank you.

This is great and really informative but one thing you mentioned is how ambivalent people may not trust their partners love or fear abandonment and this is true but what you don't mention is how people with ambivalent attachment styles often repeatedly get into relationships with people who are avoidant or disorganised. People who are avoidant generally detach from and abandon the people who care about them so the ambivalent partners fears are often justified and fulfilled. Ambivalents aren't usually in relationships with people who have healthy attachments because healthy attachments run a mile from unhealthy ones. Ambivalents and Avoidants are usually the two attachment styles that are attracted to each other because they trigger the toxic parts of each other.

This video is me to a Capital T, and at 53 still describes one powerful struggle managing my BPD - fear of abandonment (properly diagnosed with BPD and HPD when I was 52). It was like you described my life - especially my twenties where I would go home sick from work - after dry heaving in the bathroom because I had a fight with my abusive boyfriend before work - terrified he would leave me (37 jobs by the time I was 37!). I also remember being able to get a bit of peace in my life (and still do this to a certain degree - but getting better) - if I was able to check off in my mind that in that moment certain people were okay with me - all was good in my world because no one was mad at me or I haven't upset anyone or behaved in a way to upset anyone. Your videos are so helpful, Dr. May..... thank you..... 💛🌼💛☀🌻💛

This video was so insightful for me. I was just introduced to attachment styles. I took a test that my church small group was offering and this was the attachment style I tested positive for. I can definitely relate to it especially in the behaviors you pointed out. Now I know why I love my partner to be someone who can rescue me if needed, that was my family dynamic with three older brothers hovering over me all my life. Whew!!! I feel like I have a lot of work to do but, knowledge and awareness is the beginning of mind and body healthiness. I've subscribed to you channel and will be viewing more ways to heal myself. Omg I use the analogy of water through a sieve, needing constant affirmation. Looking for clues, hyper vigilant - I really find the calm after a reconnection very hard to deal with - that's when the negative thoughts take over and so it begins! Again & again!

@jennifermayph.d.2761 Жыл бұрын
What I would do for this is work with the protective part of yourself (related to the "negative thoughts") that is blocking you from taking in the good. How do you experience that part of yourself? How is it trying to help you? What makes holding onto good relational experiences dangerous? Can it let you practice taking in the good just a little bit more before it jumps back in?

@@jennifermayph.d.2761 Thank you do much Dr May. You are so right that we dismiss the good because at our core we don't feel invested in it. We're more invested in the bad because it's been affirmed externally and internally. It's not that we want to avoid the good - it's that the lack of security and hypervigilance makes it a matter of survival! And what exactly is more important than survival under any metric of hierarchy of values/or needs? God bless you.

Tried being in a relationship for the first time in six years but it's a case of 'same sxxt, different guy!' And now I'm getting out and back to being single again where I can't be 'touched' by any of this. It's too intense for my brain, we keep going round in circles. Every day for the last 7 months has been exhausting, trying to remain positive and not give in to my insecurity thoughts. I'm 52 and never had a successful relationship, they've all been like this - taking over my world and life. I'm a prisoner in my own head thanks to an abusive father and an unavailable mother. Maybe in another lifetime

I haven’t found any resources in autism spectrum disorders and attachment styles, and if people with ASD really fit well into the main 4 attachment categories. But my best guess is that people with ASD might experience something closer to anxious-avoidant attachment.

My attachment presentations have been evolving for about 12 years. Whenever I hear new info, I try to make adjustments and incorporate it. Since my main objective prior to making this video had usually been to present the material to the psychology interns at my facility (not to publish), I didn't create an ongoing reference list. But a few of the books included, Attachment in Psychotherapy by David Wallin, Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson, and The Developing Mind by Daniel Siegel. I really got most of the info from online and in-person conferences and videos from people in the field who are considered experts in attachment. The speakers included Diane Poole Heller, Stan Tatkin, Allan Schore, Mary Main, Bonnie Badenoch, David Wallin, Dan Siegel, Peter Fonagy, and others. The Sensorimotor Psychotherapy curriculum (Janina Fisher, Pat Ogden) deals with Attachment and is a good resource as well. Sorry for not being more specific, but I hope that helps!

Thanks for writing. I don't think there's a really easy answer to this question. But the crux of secure attachment is making room for a full range of experiences and emotions and allowing a child to be his full self. It also involves going through cycles of rupture and repair, so that when problems do inevitably arise, you help restore the love and good feelings again afterwards. You may find it helpful to watch my video on Secure Attachment so you can learn more about it and get ideas about how to implement some of those qualities in your relationship with your son.

If your attachment style can change over time, then how can you say it's rooted in childhood relationship to parent? I don't think my relationship with my parents reflect my attachment style at all. Not in the simplified form anyways. Probably some other traumas factor in.
