The AnyTone AT-778UV represents remarkable value, even in today's competitive market place. It's a rugged little design that can pump out 25 watts of FM power. It's analogue only. but for many, that is all that is required. Peter G3OJV takes a look at this radio and gives his opinion.

I purchased one last summer. I am in a rural area with a variety of terrain but I can hit the powerful repeaters 30 to 50 miles away. I'm only using an 8 foot dual band aerial mounted 23 feet up off the side of an old TV mast. It Seems to be more than worth the price.

I would like to add the one that actually uses there radio there is 2 different clubs and 10 different repeats around here and the only time you will hear anyone is during the weekly net and all anyone will do is give there call sine hell I got into this to actually talk to people I can do skip on 11 meter and not need a license heck I drive through Wichita Kansas a lot where they have a big list of repeaters and you dont hear anything either

Excellent review and thank you for doing it. I had procured one of these to install in the car as it was not too expensive if someone were to steal it. Thus allowing me to keep a more expensive Anytone D578UVIII in the shack, with similar programming and feel making it easy to transition between the two.

Can't speak for the Anytone branded one as I have one of the 'clones', but as others have noted the issue is that on anything higher than the lowest power setting it gets hot after a few minutes on transmit. And I mean HOT! So hot that you wouldn't want to touch the heatsink, so hot in fact that on the highest power setting it actually throttles back its own output to protect itself. The meter on the front doesn't show this happening but an inline power meter does. If you fit a fan on the heatsink - which isn't that hard to do - you can overcome this. But even with that caveat you'd be hard pressed to beat the features you get for the very competetive asking price. I've used mine quite sucessfully for over two years and recommended it to several new licencees just getting started at Foundation level. They all think it's a great buy, particularly as they're using it on the low power setting where heat isn't an issue.

I am and an older and newer Ham from Canada VABXL. I have this little radio and I love it. Just using a mobile antenna on my Poarch and a cookie plate as a ground plane. The menus are very easy to navigate and the display is very nice. It is unbeatable for it's price and performs very well. Love your videos and I am looking forward to the world of HF. Maybe a Xeigu G-90. 73.

Wonderful video sir, you hit the nail head on with your comment about Ham radio is a hobby and to reset the ham radio button. DMR is an added dimension to our wonderful hobby, I started out with a basic Heathkit QRP CW rig in 1964 and have grown from there ... I am late getting into DMR but love my Anytone 878 II Plus handheld and looking at the 778 to add to my mobile applications ... your presentation is inspiring and very informative and I wish to thank you for making this presentation. 73 AD7VV

Nice review if you're really going to do a reset I think you should consider checking the digital voice modes too. Anytone makes an excellent big brother to this radio with DMR (Anytone AT-D578UV PLUS), as I'm sure you know. I think that is an excellent option for new hams since you can do all the same things as you mention PLUS with access to a DMR repeater or a Hotspot you can access the world too with 5W. Many new hams get frustrated that there is no traffic on Analogue repeaters but with a Hotspot that is never the case! I live in Hungary but using DMR and YSF I am able to keep in touch with civilisation back in Blighty as well as here. 73!

I have the Retevis R95 version of this radio, which for some reason is more expensive than the Anytone 778UV, so by all means grab the 778UV! I bought mine especially in order to take part in the 145 Alive events, and combined with even a tiny little mag-mount antenna on the roof of my car I could reach amazing distances. From the top of the North Downs (near Oxted, Surrey) I could reach the Isle of Wight, as well as parts of Essex. Amazing! The built-in speaker sounds great, and I have received positive feedback on what this radio sounds like on the air. Even though it's maximum 25 watts in power this radio is not a compromise, it's a serious bit of kit.

I have the Retevis badged version, great radio for the money. Yes, they get warm but it's never been an issue for me, I wouldn't want to put it in an enclosed space, really does need some air flow across it! Dead easy to program with Chirp. One irritating feature I find is that if you make any changes with P1 to P6 then it has to be confirmed with a further press.

I'm currently looking at 25w mobile radios for SOTA & Trig Point operations and this radio for its size and weight would be ideal. Does any body have any experience of operating this radio on elevated ground with an high gain antenna. Will it suffer with brake through and/or front end de sensing? Great over view video, thank You

I have the Retevis RT95 vox - the same model rebadged. I love the look of it and its functions. Unfortunately the receiver gets swamped by paging interference and makes it unusable in my shack. My cheapest HHs connected to the same antenna have no problem at all. I'll try it in the car some day to try to redeem its usefulness.

There are many power supply choices. 10 Amps give you all you need. I am not sure where in the world you are located but here in UK the Watson brand is good. If yin intend to get other transceivers maybe invest in a 20 Amp model that will serve all your future needs.

I have Quite a few radios, Iv'e been on the radio now on and off since the 1980's. I only use PMR now cause It's more private for me and the wife, And it keeps her safe when Im'e not at home. I only want to use this radio on the PMR channels. Does it even do PMR. I have a HYS TC-B25 watt PMR battery pack radio, And it is a very nice unit. But when i saw this on amazon I thought It was really good for the money. Cause i does the 400mhz i want to put it on my disabled shooter, What do you think pall. is it a good radio for what i want it for.

I will never understand why everyone touts these radios as being so great. They’re cheap for a reason. That being they’re splatter boxes on TX and have barn door receivers on RX because they lack a lot of the filtering required to make them to spec. It’s bad enough that their low power offerings suffer the same fate. But this is much higher levels of RF splatter. Not to mention they drift frequency quite a bit as well. So as part of a review I’d like to see a demonstration of one of these radios on a spectrum analyzer, not just a watt meter, if not for anything but to prove me wrong. I’m not sure about the rules over there across the pond, but here in the US it’s a violation of spectral purity rules that make these illegal to operate. This also takes sales away from the manufacturers that produce proper radios. Don’t be so cheap. I’m not saying you have to buy top of the line, but certainly a lot better than this.
@watersstanton
@watersstanton Жыл бұрын
Splatter is not a term I would associate with FM as the carrier is at a constant level, unlike Am, SSB and CW. However, I suspect that you may simply be passing on what you may have read somewhere rather than owned this radio. I detected no drift, and whilst I did not check this sample for purity, our QC department did, and it was well within spec. compared with mainline named radios.
