Actually, properly, this country (as founded) is a democratic republic. In a full republic, the people vote for the lawmakers (government) that decides on all laws and the people have no direct say or vote on them (the creation of the laws; the only "say" they'd get is in the selection of those lawmakers). In a full democracy, the people vote on all laws and have total say in their creation. We have both (well, maybe not at the federal level, but for everything else). We vote for our lawmakers, and we also vote directly for our laws (at the state and lower levels); most, if not all, states,counties, etc. have ballet initiatives where the people can propose and directly vote for laws which must then be enforced if they pass; these typically get added to the same ballets where we vote for our lawmakers.
