This was just before the very big and important Florida Democratic primary which had a very crowded field of more than a dozen candidates competing against each other. George Corley Wallace crushed them all - winning every single county in the state. Forced school bussing was a big issue at that time in Florida and Governor Wallace rightly called it out as the most expensive, ridiculous, and wasteful social experiment in the history of the USA. He was exactly correct on this, as well as so many other issues - bless his strong heart for always!

You can say and think anything you want to about George Wallace, but I grew up in Alabama while he was governor. The record shows that under his leadership more was done for public education which basically means that tax dollars were being spent where they needed to be spent and where they were supposed to be spent. Furthermore, what are known as "Community Colleges" today were called "Junior Colleges" in those days. The whole system was set up while he was governor. He wanted to make higher education available to the common man and did so. Now, these days when George Wallace's name is mentioned the first thing that pops into people's minds is segregation. Unfortunately, he did what most politicians do in situations like that. He took the populist approach to appeal to a majority of voters. He modified his position prior to the 1972 presidential campaign. People who knew him are on record as saying that he wasn't a racist. However, the fact remains that he used the segregation issue earlier in his career to enhance his chance to be elected. What I'm about to say is conveniently overlooked but during his final term as governor, a record number of Black Americans were appointed to state positions, including two as members in the same cabinet. Modern-day Republicans don't like to read or hear this, but Ronald Reagan ran on a modified version of George Wallace's platform and was elected President. Wallace was promoting decentralization and returning more power to the states years before Reagan was elected.
