I had protested this man's racist policies and the failings of his State, but was at the '72 Convention with my mother who was one of his pledged delegates. I met him and shook his hand less than two months after he was shot five times and paralyzed from the waist down. He looked frail and his expression was like a deer in the headlights. He later renounced the hatred he had spewed most of his life. Sometimes, it takes a lot.

One issue candidate. Busing wasnt an issue for vast majority of people. Country was largely suburban by then. "Law & order" candidate yet Alabama's crime rate rose as high or higher than other states. Disgraceful opportunist, new deal liberal until he needed to be a racist to win governor race.

He could have won the nomination that year if he wasn't shot and kept playing his cards right. Would've lost to Nixon but pretty much every candidate would have in '72.

@@lumpydark6173 He honestly could have had a winning chance, had he picked somebody like Hubert Humphrey as his running mate. He could have won out the whole south and has some northern influence due to Humphrey. Putting it at about 282-Wallace-255 Nixon.

@@lukelawson1887 I just don't see anyone taking it from Nixon in '72.. if the election was in 1970-71 sure.. but Nixon was at his zenith in 1972. It wasn't just Mcgovern that gave nixon a landslide, it was his successes too. I think Wallace would've picked up several southern states but hard to see Nixon lose to Wallace elsewhere.

You know what would have been a Hell of a ticket? Wallace/Chisholm.
