Love your videos guys. - My SBB train experience…. The floor space between back to back seats is a good place to store medium to smaller-large suitcases. // Putting your feet up on seats is a no no. // First class cars are not just normally quiet. It is expected that you keep your voice down to the point that others cannot hear you converse. // Always greet conductors first when approaching them to ask a question. // You can purchase half-fare train tickets without showing your half-fare card but you do need to show your card (paper or stored in the SBB phone app) to the conductor on the train. // Even when a seat appears to be unoccupied, if there are others sitting immediately next to or within that group of seats, it is considered polite to ask them if it’s OK to sit there. // As noted in the video, it is always helpful while you are waiting for a train to take note of the overhead displays with regard to which sections of the platform the first and second class cars of the next train will be situated at when the train stops. // SBB ticket offices at the largest stations, sell some interesting travel gear and Swiss tchotchkes such as replica Mondaine SBB station clocks.

My husband and I were nervous when we went to Italy and Switzerland this year because we have very little experience with public transportation. But Switzerland made public transportation so easy! We were amazed at how easy it was to get around. The only time we had to ask someone for help was to confirm that Flughafen was the airport. Side note: I showed my husband your videos a year ago and they convinced him to go to Switzerland, and we can't wait to go back!

If you have an extra hour to spare and it's not evening, I'd recommend instead to take the train not through Bern but through Luzern. The ride Zürich-Luzern-Interlaken is about 3 hours and its second half (after Lucerne) is on a narrow-gauge cog-wheel train traversing the separating mountain range, with _phenomenal views._ The odd thing is that this panoramic connection is _cheaper_ than the one through Bern! Also, depending on how jet-lagged and tired you are, consider going 1st class for this ride, esp. if the SBB app on your phone (you did install it beforehand, didn't you?) shows the airport train will be crowded. BTW, you can install that app and hook up your credit card to it, it doesn't have to be a Swiss card. This way you can buy tickets skipping the potential lines.
@jijiwaiwai6747
@jijiwaiwai6747 Ай бұрын
yes, that's the route we're going to take. from Lucerne to Interlaken, it's interlaken Express, overlaps with part of golden pass line with panorama coach.
@JanPBtest
@JanPBtest Ай бұрын
@@jijiwaiwai6747 The cool thing is that the Lucerne-Interlaken train is nothing "special" in terms of pricing or fancy cars (almost all cars on that train have panoramic (tall) windows). It runs every hour and is used by locals as a commuter train. You can recognise them easily by their falling asleep while breathtaking panoramas are gliding by. The Interlaken-Montreux train can also be very cheap if it's not high season. The reason is that the tickets are cheap but its _seat reservations_ are expensive. The day before you can check on the web how many seats have already been taken, and if the train is mostly empty, you can take a very good chance on buying the ticket _only_ (IIRC it's 22 CHF with the HalfFare pass).

It's about a 10-15 minute walk between the two stations. We are coming in June. We plan to stay in Zurich for two days and then on to Grindelwald for 7. Thanks to your information, we will be getting the Swiss half fare card and the Berner Oberland pass. Would it make sense to get the Zurich pass while in Zurich rather than just using the Swiss half fare card? Also, is a credit card connected to the Swiss half fare card so it charges you when you scan it or do you have to get tickets at a kiosk every time using public transport in Zurich? Say for instance getting on and off the bus or trains around town? Thanks for your wonderful videos and help!

Hi there! It really comes down to whether or not you'll save money buying the Zurich Pass. You probably won't for transportation alone, but it might be worth it if you also plan to visit a museum or two. You'll just need to price that out. If you use the SBB Mobile App to buy your tickets (which we highly recommend!), you can link a credit card, and you can also enter your passengers and indicate to the app that they have half fare cards. Hope this helps!

About watching your luggage.....it seems that it would be difficult to do unless you find a seat right by the luggage racks. Any tips for keeping an eye on your belongings? @lauraezell7723
@lauraezell7723 2 ай бұрын
On most if not all trains there are racks above your head where small carryons and backpacks can be placed. Often there are hooks on the walls for smaller items (just don't forget them!). The best place for suitcases up to 22" that aren't overstuffed is a special space on the floor between the two rows of seats. Just slide your suitcase in on its side. I am careful and always have my luggage on the same car in which I'm traveling and face the direction where my luggage is located, but I've been traveling by train in Switzerland every year and I've never felt uncomfortable having my suitcase a bit of a ways from where I am seated.
@markusstudeli2997
@markusstudeli2997 Ай бұрын
Keep you valuables in a small bag or backpack you keep with you, and use a not too flashy suitcase that you can easily leave in the baggage racks. I travel regularly with baggage on Swiss trains, and I've never had a suitcase stolen; unfortunately I've already left behind a bag and a small backback, and they are not easy to obtain again anymore since lost baggage claim has become all digitalized...

I arrived in Switzerland yesterday and I can confirm this video was not helpful at all. And don’t get even get me started on the guide they’re trying to scam people with in this video. And if you want an actual tip, do not sit on the left side of the train if you want the best view because once you get to Bern the train changes directions and you will be on the wrong side.

Out of curiosity, did you purchase and use our guide? We'd love to hear specifics regarding what wasn't helpful to you so we can better assist other travelers. Please email us at janaandbrett@aplinsinthealps.com to share more of your experiences with us. As for sitting on the left side, we mention in the video that the left side is best coming from Bern on the way toward Interlaken-not during the entire ride. But thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us!
