This was my first go at the MinimOSD for APM 2.5. The one thing I didn't realize is that this board is V0.1 and the latest is V1.1. I learned in setting this up that you need to have power supplied to both sides of the board if you want to update the character set. I ordered mine off eBay for $15 and it came from China. You can get them from 3D Robotics, but they're much more expensive:
store.3drobotics.com/products/...
You'll also need the FTDI cable to load new firmware and character sets.:
store.3drobotics.com/products/...
This is an awesome little OSD device for your APM 2.5 setup.

I also purchased this cheap v0.1 minimosd clone, and updating the character set worked for me without the need to power both sides of the osd board. I used the latest CT tool firmware on the minimosd-extra page which contained the .mcm file. I would recommend this to everybody who is bypassing the voltage regulator (which tends to burn out) and already put solder blobs on each side of the board. It might save you some time.

Dennis, I agree you need to be cautious when purchasing items from China. Furthermore, I would pay the extra money and get the 3DR version on the MinimOSD. I was watching a video from another youtuber and noticed they attached wires to the single row of pins on the APM board. Since I did not solder the single row of pins on my board I was bummed, however, I did not think of just unplugging the Mavlink and using the the Mavlink telemetry port! As always keep the informative videos coming!

thankyou, thankyou thankyou. It wasn't until hearing your comment at about 7:00 about powering both sides of the board that I realised what I was doing wrong. After going back and reading the wiki page, it was there in black and white "Be sure that bough side of MinimOSD is powered. Otherwise it will not take." but in my haste, of course I didn't actually read the instructions. :)

Thank you for the reply. I guess what I didn't understand is that most of these guides were written for the APM2.0? which I had found, but kept thinking I should be looking for APM2.5 material instead. So I take it that the basics are the same and the INPUT and OUTPUT assignments are identical as well?

Dennis, FYI, even the 3DR minimOSD V1.1 needs both sides to be powered to update the character set. Also, do you have any plans to install ER9x on your T9X? If so, I have some good settings you can use to setup the momentary switch to toggle between the different OSD screens. It toggles between Screen1, Screen2 and no OSD.

Are there pinouts on that FDDI cable (USB to program MinimOSD)? And my MinimOSD from Banggood (v1.1) came with individual wires terminated at both ends to plug into the same pins, so I have no mini-JST (or FD13 or whatever) for the APM board. Does anyone have the pinouts for an APM board? (I could probably find them). I may have to solder to the board!

I also run the kV osd branded board from witespy and use just 5v to power the board. I had read the same thing about feeding 12v in. From the vtx 5v out I use a polulu step up to give the camera 12v. Only things connected on video side of board is Vin and ground from camera and vout and ground back to vtx. I didn't have any issues upgrading firmware or character sets with just the serialtousb from arduino. Ive tried both kvosd and the newer mwosd. Currently hooked up to a naze32.

Nice video, thanks for posting. I have a quick question... If I want to "test" the board, without hooking up a camera and a Pixhawk, what exactly do I need to hook up? I tried connecting my yellow cable from my video transmitter to video out of the minimOSD. Then I hooked up a 3s lipo to the minimOSD. Shouldn't that be enough to power it and transmit a signal? Shouldn't I be able to at least see the blank OSD info? Thanks.

I purchased a minimOSD board and it came with a "Y" cable. the small connector goes to the APM (can't miss that) Then it splits to what I'm guessing one end to "R"adio and the other to "O"SD But on the video I see the Radio connection coming from the OSD, not from the APM through the "Y" cable My intention is to have Video and Telemetry just like you on your video. what should I do? ignore that split and go ahead and connect the radio on the V out just like on this video? here is the video, go to time stamp 8:52 (youtube /watch?v=Msr7I6ApcUk) Also if you turn the APM board over and look at the bottom single row of pins, notice that UART0 pins match UART0 pins of the Mavlink in the upper right hand corner of the board. You only need to connect 3 wires to the APM board (UART0 RX0, +5V, GND) from the MinimOSD board. So you can leave the Mavlink attached and use the APM UART0 single row of pins for the MinimOSD.

Hi there Dennis, you needn't reply to me. This is for your viewers. Much has been written and discussed about the voltage regulator on various iterations of the the Minim OSD. As you are wading knee deep in the data and methodology,....There has been problems with the vregulator getting hot and failing on some versions and/or production runs, and that the best way of powering the device is by soldering the coupling pads on the board (two must be made; one on the top and the bottom). Once this is done 5V will be provided for the entire board from the APM alone (digital side), I spent good money on my dedicated UBEC that makes nice clean constant power for the APM and the peripherals it provides power to. 12V power is routed to the VTx and Camera directly and exclusive of the Minim's analogue side. If it is true that you must have power from both ends (digital and analog) of the board to get the FW update and character sets etc, then you may as well do the soldering of the "link pads" and have it done with before you attempt to do the FW and character set update. Better safe than sorry. By the way, I will be using a much less expensive FTDI-USB dongle that connects directly to the pinouts on the Minim. Regards All

Haha thanks anyway:) Autotune hasn't been working too well for me so I guess I'll ACTUALLY sit down for a few days and do the work lol

Yeah let me know for sure if you do. One thing I might suggest is signing up to garagepilots . com and posting over there. We'd love to have you as a member and even better if you'd share your modding knowledge. No worries if you don't...just wanted to suggest. Take care.

the OSD is only for FPV, so you can see things like ground speed, altitude etc.. you can try going to the arducopter wiki "copter . ardupilot . com" or try RC groups and look for thread no 1820773, then go to post 6 by jabram. One of the best and most detailed build logs.

The following guide is for APM 2.5 and should help you out: copter . ardupilot . com/wiki/connecting-your-rc-input-and-motors/ I don't know if they're identical to the 2.0 as I've only ever used the 2.5 version. Good luck and let me know if you run into any problems.

It has some more options but it doesn't work worth a damn. Ended up taking it out of my Zephyr because it kept locking up and killed the video range. Video works fine now that its out. Eversince they updated everything its all went to crap.

Your better off powering the minimosd from the APM side by soldering the pads on the board and leaving the 12v feed off the video side of the Board..... The voltage regulator has been known to run hot and fail....

If you don't mind would you check out garagepilots . com and post in the forums over there? Either myself or someone in the community will be glad to help you out and it will be easier than trying to communicate through KZfaq. Thanks and good luck.
