3DR radio installation and use
I finally got this radio MAVLink all working this morning after wrestling with it for the last three days; I wanted to show how to set it up and shoe the problems that I had and how I overcame them.
I cover the following in the video --
What comes in the pack?
Two radios
Antennas
Connecting cable (will not work with the dedicated port on the APM 2.5)
Connecting to the APM -- UART0/3DR dedicated port -
Cable for the wrong connection -- what you need to buy -- connectors for dedicated ports -- DF13 5 position and DF13 4 position connectors/cables
What you need to do to connect it -
Ground station
After XP -- no need to install driver
Air station
Make a suitable cable remembering to cross the TX and RX cables
How to set-up -
• Plug into PC
• Power up model
• Solid green light shows an active link (red LED shows activity)
• Start Mission Planner
• Go to Initial Setup -- 3DR Radio -- Load Settings
• If you can see both radios on this screen the ground station and air side radio are working
To use -
Select COM port and click connect!
Gotchas -
• 57k baud
• If you can't see the APM over the link
• Check the cable from APM to Radio -- swap TX/Rx pins
• Update firmware in both radios
• Ground station use connector supplied
• Air side use the FTDI connector and the special cable

Absolutely love your videos. Well prepared and presented and very informative. I have watched most of them in conjunction with setting up various boards and options. Today, I'm setting up the 3DR telemetry on a 2.7 HK APM board and it worked flawlessly thanks in part to your great video. Hope more people utilize these useful tools I I have. Thanks again and keep it coming.

I could not get the two to connect with each other even following all the steps until I saw that even reset to default the number of channel goes to 50 and when I changed that to 10 on both it finally saw each other. Still trying to get working with APM but I think I got bad cable waiting for a replacement. Hope it will be OK. By the way great video series, keep up the good work!!

I was under the impression that the Air side was done thru the Mission Planner. Or at least I have seen or read it happens that way. Of course I updated the FW on the Ground with the FTDI just fine. So I am encouraged to here of your experience. Just figured out how to do the MinimOSD and the CPPM FW on my FrSKy D8RIIPlus with the FTDI. All ready paid for itself. Thanks for this.

Painless360 Feeling is mutual of course sir. Now what if I really got stuck with ER9X and the flight modes/switches for APM 2.5 Painless? Would you be able to offer any advice? Throw in your two pence :-) Just hit a wall with the version / build of the FW . Brand new to RC and the 9X. Need to get some water under the bridge (Get away from the workbench and fly) with this 650mm quad trainer.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. Just now setting up my APM 2.6, had everything working so decided to tackle the 3DR radios. I had these working before with multiwii, but even though I had solid green lights indicating they were linked, I had no telemetry. Luckily I still had my FTDI adapter from my old MWii/Arduino days! I flashed them both, then ran the setup in Mission Planner, and they are talking now! 8^)

Hi Alan, I've not read about the timeout it on the blogs (and can't see it in the code) but from the experience setting up these radios this seems to be the case - you can see it happen in the video. The only other thing I did when trouble shooting was check that there were no shorts between any of the pins on both the airside radio and the APM socket using a multimeter. I've read that some boards had excess solder that caused problems. Good luck locating the problem on yours.
@Painless360
@Painless360 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, not tried that exact board but this doesn't seem to be board specific from the posts I've found in the forums. I struggled with mine until I rewired the cable to the APM board from scratch to make sure I'd crossed the Tx and Rx lines and then flashed both units with the latest firmware using the Mission Planner as shown in this video. The wireless connection has to be made within a minute after power on at the air side else it all times out. Hope this helps.

So my situation is, I've got solid lights, apm knows it's connected, but I can't do anything on apm, as in its not letting me see what's happening to the quad in real time. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi Painless I don't know if a dud or a setting issue ,I was having lots of trouble with the PID settings,No matter what i did i could not get a steady flight when adding I /D As soon as i added any of the two the quad's motors would slow down like a oscillation . So what your saying then is the bluetooth of the crius might not work with APM 2.6. The crius board GPS and module and OLED is up for offers.

Hello, I managed to solve the issue of the telemetry 433 version but now I have the same problem that mission planner does not get data, now if I connect the USB cable to the PC it works and when disconnecting the cable without disconnecting the battery and connect the telemetry works but does not send data but I see them in mission planner but I can not do anything just watch them. the green lights are fixed and the red ones blinking (connect and send me message getting params)

Thanks for your videos. You just got me through my first build, a 300mm hex with APM. I have a question if you have time. I had a roll over on testing and when I powered back up I saw smoke. Unplugged and found out the 3dr antenna mount had cracked. I soldered it back and powered up. It lights up and flashes for about a minute then the light goes solid but it doesn't connect. Any ideas? Also I spliced the OSD into the telemetry cable and it works but had to switch the TX and RX cable for the 3dr to work. Then the OSD data is all over the screen like its trying to fit on a larger screen. Any ideas on that? Thanks again and great job on the videos. John

+MustangO3 so you have three things to fix? Flipping on takeoff, damaged telemetry radio and OSD size? We have a video on things to check if you flip on takeoff. Replace any components that have smoked, and I've not seen that on an OSD, check settings.. best of luck!

Hello, I tried changing the NET ID with this tutorial right here.ardupilot.org/copter/docs/common-configuring-a-telemetry-radio-using-mission-planner.html Followed each and every step carefully. But after I save settings and reboot only the net Id of the Ground Module is changed. The air module's net id remains unchanged and it doesnt pair after the reboot. Also when I open the Sik radio settings page in mission planner and click on load settings, the remote module doesnt load its firmware name. I need to use 2 telemetry modules in parallel. I am experimenting with RTK GPS along with APM. So i need one for the usual telemetry and one for sending the GPS data for RTK.

Sounds like the airside radio isn't running at the right baud rate and flash both with the latest firmware. I'd recheck that part of the setup first (9:40).. Also, swap the tx and rx wires on the little cable from the APM to the airside radio if you still don't get any data and connect to the radio as soon as power is applied to the model. Don't wait too long as they seem to 'lose' the ability to connect sometimes. Hope you get it sorted. Happy flying!

Hi. But with an FDTI connector I can flash the airside module. Then can I also solve the issue that I can not flash the ground module? I will buy an FDTI module. Thanks.

Painless360 Further to above, no FTDI cable was needed for my modules as mention in posting above. Just installed 3DR telemetry to HK APM 2.7 board and all is working just fine. Thanks again.

Does the new mission planner update the firmware for the remote radio now over wireless?

Painless360 Well I tried doing that on the tri copter I built and it worked. I was able to push firmware over wireless to the remote radio on the quad. I also tired this method on the small bug copter I am building now and it worked perfectly.

Hey there! I need help! My 3Dr from ebay is working perfectly with windows and mission planner over usb connection. But when i try to use it with android droidplanner 2, there is no way to get a connection. Always mavlink error. I think that my Android Phone (Nexus 5, 4.4) does not recognize the 3Dr usb ground module! Any suggestions?! Maybe a driver problem because Android cant read ftdi r232 usb uart? -Michael

Some android devices do not provide power through the USB port and provide true on the go (OTG) support. Samsung Tab 3 doesn't but Samsung Tab 4 does, You will also need the OTG adapter for the tablet/device you are using. Hope this helps.

Good to hear, most of the issues are down to a lack of power. As I've not got an android machine here that supports OTG, I can't suggest what's next. If you get it to work I'd be interested in the answer.. Best of luck.

What exactly did you reconnect to get the heart beat happening just then at 6.58 when you said,"...just reconnecting this"....I am getting some confusing things going on, because I know that I have the thing wired up correctly, I had to solder direct to the UART2 solder pads on the back of the board after I had a failure of the 5 pin DF13 connector shortly after I made the "Wyed" leads to accomodate both the Telemetry And MinimOSD . Either the Tx or the Rx lead connection at the Air radio is faulty, So that is how I got around to my first mod of the APM,The thing of it is I am still not getting APM's Heart Beat. Can you offer any advise? Is there a timing issue for connecting the APM or the Telemetry Radio as I suspect? I am about to order a complete unit. BTW as a return favour, I thought I would inform you of this truly magnificent deal from UAV Objects, an arm of RCTimer >>> www.uavobjects.com/product/arduflyer-2-5-and-avdomecn06plus-with-915-mhz-mavlin/

I saw an odd problem where if the connection to the airside radio didn't happen within a very short time after power on at the model end I seemed to lose the option to connect. At the point you mention I unplug the battery from the model and reconnect it (the beeps you here on the video are the ESCs powering up). It always seemed to help clear any problem I had connecting to the radio. Hope this helps. Happy flying!

Thanks, I am counting on it. How in the world would you have thought of that in the first place? But I will say that it certainly puts an interesting spin on other interfacing that we negotiate frequently. I had an issue with an arcing caused by making a non deliberate connection of the XT60 with the power dist. board. I am putting a switch on the output of my 3A/5v UBEC so I can have arc free power-up of my APM2.5.2 and peripherals. Regards C

Hi buddy, i accidentally updated my ground radio unit from 1.7 to 1.9 firmware and now i can't update the air unit too. I have the ftdi and both blink green led when powered separedly, when powered together, both become solid green but no connection on MP. When i try to update firmware using MP or 3dr config tool, it says "failed to identify radio" and when i try to load settings it says "failed to enter command mode". BTW, i'm using a chinese 915mhz 3dr radio from aliexpress. Could you help me? I've tried almost everything, read a dozen pages/forums, saw another dozen videos but nothing worked. Thanks and keep up with your GREAT videos.

Thiago Arecippo The only way I know that works is by using an FTDI Basic adapter to connect the airside radio to the USB on the PC (as shown here) and forcing the update into the airside radio. Hope it helps.

I've tried with the ftdi adapter normal way and forcing bootloader and nothing. It stops when send command ATI, seems that is the command to recognize the radio. I think that it is giving me this error because my radio is a chinese clone.

Hello, I ordered My APM Set and ended up with 433Mhz on the 3DR set not the 915 Mhz that I need- even after checking with the vendor (Bang Good) they don't stock 915Mhz? even though it shows on the site? anyway anyone have a 915 Mhz that they want to trade even for a 433 Mhz 3DR set as it is no good to me in the USA I could send it back but thought I would check this way first & might get lucky that someone had the same thing happen in the UK? and we could just trade? keeping my fingers crossed

will this work in part with the osd board?
@Painless360
@Painless360 8 жыл бұрын
Not always, there is only one telemetry port so you normally have to choose between them. The Pixhawk ahs more telemetry ports to support this. I've heard of builders doing it and some running into problems with overloading the output pins on the board making both unstable. Best of luck!

The OSD is limited to the range of the FPV signal, the lower frequency for the telemetry radios will give you a lot more range normally.. Best of luck!
