This is a big thing all preppers should do. Everyone thinks rice beans and canned meat. When you have to think about mental morale in a shtf situation. A simple handful of chips or a chocolate bar can give a major boost to stay focused and keep going.

We like no bake cookies. Oats, pb, cocoa powder, sugar, Pet milk and butter. Everything can be shelf stable and no oven needed. Tasty treat and super easy. I made these during a power outage on a wood stove. Percolator full of coffee and a couple of cookies, major morale booster.

🚨 having done this 10 years ago and 5 years ago, keeping them vacuumed sealed and in 60 degree dark storage: items that had shortening, baking powder and/or oil went bad. This included nuts, cereal, cookie mix, Ritz and saltine crackers, and brownie mix. The chickens liked it all though.

Corn chips are one thing you definitely want on hand. Even if they're stale, you can use them as a fire starter. The oil in the chip will make it burn for up to 5 minutes or more.

A Classico 16 oz. tomato sauce jar is a Mason Jar. It even has markings on the side, like a regular mason jar. You can use a regular size ring and lid on top. So You now have a free mason jar. It will vacuum seal the same way. To get the label off, Just soak the empty jar in the sink with hot water and soap to wash off the label. It will come off fairly easily. The small amount of glue left on the outside of the jar, is easily removed with a scrubby.

This is a great tip. I just looked into it based on your comment, and it seems like lots of people have good success with reusing classico sauce jars as canning jars. If I'm feeling brave enough, I might give it a try with pressure canning, but at the very least they would be great for vacuum canning.

That's what I use for pressure canning beef stews, pork stews, chili, etc. The Atlas bottles are 750ml which are perfect for 1 person servings. The 1 liter jar is too much and the 500ml jar is not enough.

It's not recommended to reuse the commercially processed jars for canning since they are processed quite differently than home canning and can have flaws. However, I reuse these jars for flour, rice, quick beans, and anything else other than canning. Buy new unused jars for home canning. If you're taking the time to preserve your food, don't take a chance on a compromised jar.

@@Tamara_D Thank You Tamara for sharing that point. I DO NOT USE THESE JARS FOR CANNING. I do, However use them to store my dehydrated food, rice, etc. I use new canning lids and screw rings. I vacuum seal them. There are so many uses. Storing saved seeds in them is another use. So many ways to take advantage of them.

I love being able to use a vacuum sealer, but it's also possible to remove air from a regular ziplock bag by submerging it in a big bowl of water just above the seal line. Because the oxygen in the bag is forced by gravity to rise above the water line. It takes some practice, and you have to dry off the bags, but it doesn't require special bags or electricity. It's definitely not as efficient for prepping for a disaster event, but it's something worth practicing for being able to store food after an event that results in not having electricity.

Thanks for the video. I am not sure how many times you seal your bags. I seal them three times just to make sure. Popcorn kernels are a forever food apparently so this would make a sweet treat if you have sugar, syrup etc to go on. Also sweets will last a long time and chocolate and nuts can be kept in the freezer. Maybe those cake mixes to make a birthday cake in shift would make someone happy so birthday candles to. Sometimes just the little thoughtful things give you a boost 😊 well done that young lady taking part in your video, she did great ❤️

I don't vacuum seal my O2 absorbers. Just put em in a jar and put the lid on. They seal on their own, same as mylar bags. I really like that you encourage people to experiment and test their options (ie, ziplocks in sealer). We need to remember that to be awesome, you need setbacks to overcome☺️

Thanks, Les. For me, this is a good reminder that I need to focus on more than just nutrition. While I store a lot of meats, veges, fruits, beans, rice, wheat, etc., I always neglect comfort foods. I mostly store them the same way you do in either mylar or dry canning in canning/Mason jars. As I've stated here before, I've been experimenting with dry canning and the results have been really good so far. I don't expect the 20 year shelf-life we get out of many dry goods because of the oils and such in most comfort foods, but extending their shelf-life through repackaging definitely makes sense. Thanks again for a great video.

But my main concern has always been “what is the real shelf life of chocolate and nuts stored for long term”… I seal all my dry food in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. What if you repackage nuts and chocolate (not together) in mylar. What is the shelf life ? I want to store these goodies for years as a prepper. Thanks :)

Just discovered your channel! Great info. I love my food saver but those jar sealers rarely work 1st try.. BEST INVENTION I have found is the mason jar sealer that is rechargeable. I think there are different brands. Just pop it on. Press the button for around 40 seconds. Compact, easy to store or just leave on counter. Easily reseal your jars of chips, cookies or choc chips, as well as any other thing you can find. I paid less than 30 bucks and best money ever spent! No dragging out the big food saver

Hey Chef. You were asking about how to seal Mylar bags. Here is how to do it. 1. Take a regular vaccum seal bag and cut off the side of the bag that is rough. Discard the smooth side. 2. Cut the rough plastic into strips about 3 inches by 3/4 inches 3. If using a ziplock bag then lock the bag starting at both sides and working to the middle but do not lock about 1 inch of the center leaving it open. 4. Insert the plastic strip in the opening leaving about 3/4 of an inch sticking out. 5. Vaccum seal the bag as you normally would 6. Ensure that you heat seal the bag in the exact same spot 3 times 7. Finish locking the ziplock seal 8. Cut the plastic strip that is sticking out the flush with the bag. I'm doing up a bunch of pasta right now using this method and it works great.

The main purpose of "junk" foods is for mental health , not physical health. If you are forced to stay indoor for an extended time a snack can work wonders especially for young children.
