This is a great movie...but Mel Gibson himself has said it is not historical. He blends together the Maya and the Aztecs in many ways, so you guys will probably want to look up all the stuff that is wrong, just so you do not learn any false facts from this movie.✌

There were Mexicans in the Yucatan at Chichen Itza, before the Europeans came. Their bloodletting practices were different. Aztec makeup is black like their obsidian weapons. Maya loved the green of Central American jade.

It's why the movie had a lot of complaints it was sharing false information and trying to mix many different communities and painting them as one.

Actually, it's not that unrealistic It really showed the reality of these people, which generated a wave of anger, as it moved away from the cliché "only the colonists are bad" They managed to represent many things perfectly

@@yeyosilver7067 Never said "unrealistic"...that is not a word I even used. I said it is not true to history, and it is not...that is very clear. Realism and historical accuracy are not the same thing.

This is one of my favorite movies. Even though this a mixture of cultures. Shows how violent the human race really is no matter the culture. Never about race, but which group is the strongest and powerful. I just finished a book called “The Empire of the Summer Moon” the rise and fall of the Commanche

Most of human history life was brutal and harsh. Death wasn't as feared as it is today. Mayan culture/religion was based on, not how you lived but how you died. There were several "heavens" and the highest level of heaven were reserved for women who died during childbirth, children, and those who died in battle.

The white powder is probably limestone for whitewash on buildings. Limestone has also been used on crops for improvement of soil.
@CopiousDoinksLLC
@CopiousDoinksLLC Жыл бұрын
Yep, they're mining lime which is why they show one of the workers coughing up blood - lime is really bad for your insides if you're exposed to it for too long and most of those workers probably had really short lifespans as a result. Also, lime itself can be good for crops but it can also really mess with the pH of soil which may be one of the reasons why we see the Mayan's crop failures and subsequent famine that's happening in the city immediately afterward. The Mayans may not have put two and two together and figured out they're adding too much to their crops.

So far all the reactors have missed the meaning of the arrival of the Spanish fleet and why Mel Gibson filmed it that way. First of all, that arrival is what saves Jaguar Paw when he's about to get killed on the beach at the last moment. Second, what Jaguar Paw and his family have ahead of them is a new beginning. Symbolism, the Spanish Fleet arrival is what saves those smaller tribes prosecuted, murdered and enslaved by the Mayans/Aztecs. Look at who is on the first boat, soldiers and the priest holding the cross ABOVE them. Why? Because the purpose of the Spanish wasn't to arrive to a shore and murder everyone they met, those ships could barely fit 25-30 men each and all the food and fresh water required for months of travel, yeah, the ships and the armored soldiers look impressive to the indigenous people, but they were still too few to abandon the shore, go into the jungle and exterminate tribes of thousands. As the marines found out when they arrived at the pacific islands in WWII, it's not easy to go into a jungle and survive, even without the Japanese shooting at you, and even with modern medicine to try and fight the infections. The mission was to make alliances with the locals, teach them and learn from them (the first grammar book of a modern language was the Spanish by Antonio de Nebrija in 1492, the second was a Nahuatl grammar in 1531, yes, even before an English grammar was published). The Spanish clerics learned the native language and wrote a grammar, they were the most cultured of the population, since they knew Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, French, German, English, geography mathematics, philosophy... they were not in the ships just to spread the religion, they were experts at communication with foreigners and acted as diplomats. That's what Mel Gibson meant, the end of an era of savagery and cannibalism, the beginning of a new era for Jaguar Paw, his woman, children, and everyone else. The Spanish Ships: A New Hope (no Luke Skywalker) 🙂

Brilliant film. Gives a sense of time and place. It is not a documentary. My favorite "error" moment. Assuming that nest our hero throws was full of pepsis wasps (two inches long), they likely would have incapacitated (or killed) all of his pursuers. Second-worst sting on the planet. Several stings can paralyze. The mud coating was to protect him from the stings. Variety in N. America is known as the tarantula hawk. We have them in our yard during the summer.

the Conquistador went on trial for fabricating a lot of their accounts in order to gain more funding from the Spanish crown. they were later put on trial in Spain for fabricating the accounts, as well as for illegal slavery & for the mass killing of indigenous peoples. these are charges that would normally put someone to death automatically, but the Conquistador were put into exile. Christopher Columbus was also put in exile for the same charges, & he chose to be put in exile in the Caribbean. the Conquistador would later be influenced by Columbus. human sacrificing is not fake. it really did happen. but it was not like this, at all. sacrifice is considered a holy practice. only people who were pure, or people who volunteered themselves, were sacrificed. many warriors who were captured volunteered to sacrifice themselves because sacrificing yourself was seen as a warrior's lament, like a Norse warrior believing violence is his ticket to valhalla. the murals on the wall were half true. there were murals that depicted sacrifices & certain ceremonies, but it was to place moral or courage into people. not to place fear into people. they depicted their deities, rather than human beings. you have to keep in mind these practices & ceremonies were considered holy. they were revered like a church or religious alter. not every culture practiced sacrifice, but it was common among many cultures in the Americas (North, Central, & South America). but it was not like how media depicts it. indigenous peoples are not savages. i'd like to make that very clear.

You guys need to understand the context of the movie before you watch it , main thing you have to know as a reaction or analyzing the movie is that it's a time of drought in that time , that's why they living how they living. due to no rain , they weren't able to harvest their main crop which is corn 🌽, so it's also lead them at one point to eat themselves , cannibalism , so basically they are capturing people to sacrifice it tot their gods, different tribes, for other purposez aswell , not only for sacrifice . , enough blood according to them and to the money , not sure about the eclipse part but yea . so there's a lot to this, you have to know about the Aztec culture to understand this movie , even though it's a lot of exaggerating in those movie scenes.

It's a testament to the reality of conquest. We were taught that life in the Precolumbian Americas was pristine and without the cruelties, humans put upon other humans. This shows the truth of how all cultures have suffered man's inhumanity to man, albeit not in a perfect historical presentation. We now think the cruelness of conquest and slavery was all racially based, but that is a falsehood. Historically, stronger people always exploit weaker people. The end showed a new conqueror coming to take over from the current familiar conqueror. My father would ask if you were being subjected to horrible cruelty, would it matter if the inflictor looked like your people or not?

The mesoamericans did have libraries and documents carved into stone but they were mostly destroyed be the Spaniards. The Spaniards have also demonized the natives and have made us think they were more evil than they actually were.

pure fantasy, many errors in the script and in the story, the protagonist is pierced by a spear, he does not bleed to death, he flees with a fatal wound and they do not catch him, he jumps from a waterfall, he beats a jaguar in the race, he does not know weakens or faints from blood loss and never dies, they paint the Aztecs as the villains of the Mayans, when the Aztecs only fought with the Mexícas or Meshícas in center of México, the Mayans were in the southeast and Guatemala, The outfits do not correspond, they look like indigenous or aboriginal people from a tribe without progress, they show their precarious huts even though they have impressive pyramids and in their time they must have looked spectacular as new, they only show the pyramids of the Aztec sacrifices when they were supposedly captured by they, the jaguar looks like a stuffed animal on the face, the wild boar sounds like tyrannosaurus rex

The part I never understand about those who react to this movie is how they can see how terrible the pre-Columbian world was and still assume that the Spanish were worse.
