Aztecs and their own kind sacrificed them and ate their hearts, the English and their decedents saw them as subhuman, the Spanish saved them, conserved many of the native languages, married with them and made them part of the kingdom. In fact, by the 1600s you had men that where born in the Americas being governors in mainland Spain, as the Americas were not even seen as a colony but an extension of Spain. This is why you do not see much of Spain in the African coastline from 1200-1492 as the Portuguese were already there for centuries so Spain did not have much on land except for the Canary islands. The problem with the modern slavery from 1500-1700 was the the major Slave trade was for African area slaves to be imported to the West Colonies. This was not some random event, it became part of the world economy at that point so far as to have the trades Routes mapped with directions and warehouse depots to house the slaves for sale. At that time Spanish, Portuguese, French and British Ships became the de Facto transportation for importing slaves to the West, but this was not 100% effective as slaves did not breed well in captivity and were worked to the bone literally in severe harsh conditions. This lead to more slaves being imported leading to pairs of female and males being imported to the Americas as to have a supply of newer slaves adapted to the local climates, this breeding aspect of Slavery is always not mentioned and is simply ignored. It is true and a fact of history that the first African Slave owner in the USA was actually an African not European. Many native Tribes in the Americas also bought African Slaves from European slave traders this was very well documented in the early days of the USA as labor was in short supply thus the demand for massive Slave Trades to occur. Some nations have come from slavery and then enslaved other nations forgetting their past, but they were not thinking of the past but only building Empires and alliances to survive the next century. There is more slavery today in 2024 than during the height of the Atlantic African slave trade and this is a sad fact of this human acceptance of Slavery as a means to "Build" Empires.
