Plugging a Rocket Motor

www.ApogeeRockets.com - Need a plugged motor with no ejection charge but can't find one with the right impulse? We get that question all the time.
It's very rare that you would ever fly a rocket that doesn't use an ejection charge, but there are some cases where a clustered rocket may require plugged motors on the outer motors where there is no place for the ejection charge to go.
Important Note: Plugging a motor is not approved by Estes, NAR nor Tripoli. It is considered a motor modification, so they can't be flown at launches insured by the NAR, Tripoli, nor at AMA launches which follow NAR guidelines. As the video suggests, the best alternative is to vent the ejection charge to the atmosphere.

During the design faze, plan to vent the ejection charge rearward for a last burst of thrust..

Here a second reason, Tim . . . Electronic deployment . . . Third reason . . .. RC Rocket Glider., where you want to control the "Roll Out" at Apogee.

I just wanted to comment this, I'm just building a rocket with electronic deployment and I the entire first half of the video was getting me mad

Thank you. Pouring in epoxy on the black powder is genius, like the clay cap. I’ll check that the epoxy doesn’t heat up because of a reaction and do it outside. Thanks!

On reloadable motors with an ejection well, I've always filled the ejection well with bearing grease. then installed the cap, or taped up the ejection well. The latter is a little difficult if you get grease on the outside of the motor or ejection well. The best solution is to buy a plugged forward closure.

Perfect.....I want to do a cluster with electric air start after the first 3 out of 6 burn out to try and get a little more altitude....thanks Tim. = )

Do you know what the weight of a c motor casing is after burnout? I want to balance my glider and need to know what the weight would be in the rear after the boost. I could just burn a motor and weigh it...but would rather do the math using an loaded motor and calc. the difference lol. Thanks for Your time in review of my question.

Okay. So, is there has any motor only for booster? I couldn't even find it on the Apogee shop. Or does a motor like C6-0 have no ejection charge because there is no clay in the upper part?

If you want to buy a plugged motor, you need one that has a P on the end, not a 0. There are not too many, and the ones that exist are large high-power motors. You can make one yourself using the information in the video.
