Apollo 13 Flight Director Loop - Splashdown (133:00-143:52)
The final part of the Apollo 13 Flight Director series - The crew prepare for Service and Lunar Module separation, followed by re-entry and splashdown near to the recovery carrier, Iwo Jima.
Headphones are recommended - Left Channel - FD Loop and Right Channel - Capcom. Capcom loop is very noisy at times.
All media courtesy NASA except:
* Paolos wonderful MOCR Simulation
* Clock from Orbiter Space Simulator
* All pictures timed by Robin Wheeler - Amazing work and always a pleasure to work with.
* Johannes Kemppanen for the help with the Flighplans
* KS for access to the Flight Director notes
Rob Zelenak - US TV Coverage

On this day at School, we had another special assembly where we prayed again for the crew and for the safe re-entry and splashdown. As we all know, the Film Apollo 13 used far too much so-called 'artistic license'. It's so great you've covered this mission (and other missions) so that we know for real what really went on, what they were up against.

I will never forget that day. I was at home from school, sick I think. I had been following the mission since launch and of course intensely since the bang. By this time, it was really not certain they’d come back home but at least the power-up was being reported as having started. I watched entry interface with my mum and I think we were both in tears as the CM finally emerged from blackout. It seemed like an age. Finally drogues and mains and then finally splashdown. What a success for NASA. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 13.

Tough ride home for Haise. Lovell cool as a cucumber..."steely eyed missle man.". First time ive heard this...have listened to all the other 13 loops youve uploaded. Put this on to go to sleep to but ten minutes in ive already got goose bumps like were back in real time. Awesome...

I think that was perhaps Jim's subtle way of saying "thank-you" to Joe for all he had done trying to get them home - just in case they didn't make it in the end.

Ok, I'm told that the film "Apollo 13" was better than most Hollywood depiction of real events -- which is damning with faint praise indeed. I remember vaguely the line saying something like "flight, they are still shallowing up, should we tell them / Can we do anything about it / no / then they don't need to know, do they?". Listening to this we see that 1) they were shallowing up, but it's wasn't anything to worry about, there was no question about not telling them, and they indeed told them right away. Also there was the part where they were calling, calling, calling...but in reality, they got telemetry and then got voice right away...or did I miss something? Don't get me started.

@@lunarmodule5so true. I mean… it was a movie, there was bound to be some artistic license, but I am deeply grateful that there weren’t aliens bursting out of chests or whatever! LoL I will say this though - despite my lifelong fascination with space that started 5 years before I saw the film, it was the film that taught me space was really dangerous (I was only 1 when Challenger exploded). Hearing the actual flight director’s loop is a whole new level of immersion into the situation, and you’ve put it together like a symphony. ::chef’s kiss::

@@lunarmodule5 That absolutely fucking pisses me off. Drives me up a wall. Yeah, in a movie about something as complex as spaceflight (the graphics are gorgeous) you might get a few details wrong. Or you might condense something for brevity's sake, or you might display a little artistic license (From the Earth To the Moon does this well, some of it is mildly invented, but you can see the real astronauts doing it, not sure about how much umbridge Aldrin took over Armstrong crashing in the simulator, for example). But... that? Whose decision was THAT? Never happened. Only time anyone got annoyed was Lovell complaining about the reentry checklists. Swigert literally wrote many of the CSM emergency procedures. It's utter nonsense and doesn't belong in an otherwise decent movie
