In this video, Jeff Durbin and Luke Pierson of Apologia Christian Ministries were filming for an upcoming documentary currently in production on Christian/Atheist dialogue. Jeff Durbin debates a man who was the vice-president of the Atheist society at Cornell University. The encounter was filmed at the Reason Rally in Washington, D.C..
Jeff presses the Atheist on the implications of his worldview and the Atheist admits that he has no ultimate justification for uniformity in nature, logic or morality.

+Hanover Fist 1 cor. was a letter from Paul to the church in Corinth. In that time and location, women had a lot of religious sway as they were seen to be more connected to the supernatural. Such as oracles and priestesses. They had an authority in religious matters. Now in the Church in Corinth, women were speaking out about other Gods in the church and were trying to incorporate pagan ideals into the Church (This was different from celebrating Christmas on the same day as Saturnalia). Paul was telling the church to be silent about what they were preaching as the apostles sent men with the proper gospel to teach the church. Paul also told people who are always speaking in tongues with no translator to be silent as well as prophets. The NT does not support chauvinistic ideas. The first people to witness the resurrection of Christ were women. By Jewish law, they could not actually give a testimony at all, and yet the NT records it and gives credit to them. Most of the miracles Jesus did were to women. Paul later says to the church of Ephesus for husbands to submit to their wives and love them as Christ loved the church. In other words, die for them. Gender does not really play apart to Christ as he calls us his bride. This includes both male and female. In regards to the second half of your comment and more specifically Luke 14:26, the greek word used here is "Miseo" which can mean to detest, denounce, or love something less than something else. In the context of this passage Jesus is telling all who was following him to do the latter. If they are not willing to leave everything and follow him, they aren't his disciples. This is a major practice among Buddhists. So Jesus isn't saying hate your family or even disrespect them, He is saying, that they need to love Him more. This does not violate the 5th commandment as Jesus is God, and they are to love God more than anyone anyway, and two because loving Christ more than family is not considered dishonorable to anyone. Finally, Many times in the old and new testament and even today, people were and are expecting a violent king that would lead an uprising against their oppressors. At the time of Jesus, people thought Jesus was going to lead a violent insurrection against Rome. As we can tell this was not the case. But Christ did not cause division. Division came from the fact that Religious peoples and all who would not accept him would turn against his people (Which, by all accounts, we can see happened). When he says he came to bring a sword he meant that, there will be families destroyed as many will not accept those who believe in Christ. He's speaking of those who will be persecuted on his behalf. We see this even in modern times especially among the apostates of the Muslim world and now, more prevalent, in the western world... Malachi 4 (and I'm sure you're referring to Mal. 4:6) the verse is not speaking of children reconciling with their parents, it's speaking of children of God reconciling with God. It's not even a prophesy about Jesus, but of John the Baptist as his message was about repentance or changing one's mind from their old ways. Finally, I will agree that religion sucks and Christ thought so too. People can be easily blinded by religion and that's why Christ died to do away with it. He came to establish a kingdom which is free from religious hogwash and rituals but love and relationship with the King of Kings. I hoped this cleared up any misconceptions. Some words are hard to fully translate into English. ^_^

@nickj14711 So are you making the claim that NO Christian's are honest and that ALL atheists are honest? Just the fact that you put that comment proves objective morality, proves Absolute truth, and proves God is the Creator of Heaven and earth. You really dont have any idea how ignorant you really are to the most basics of logical reasoning and biblical evidence that are inseparable. I honestly ask you to think harder than what your thinking.
@teachingtetelestai
@teachingtetelestai 5 жыл бұрын
@nickj14711 Thank you for replying, I liked your last comment. Well first, I have objective morality based on this collection of ancient manuscripts that have been collected over the past 3,000 years. If you would like to discuss the validity of the bible we can do that, because it seems like your not sure if the bible is a reliable source, when you said it has been discredited I was puzzled. I was puzzled because your claim that the bible has been discredited isn't true at all. In fact it's quite the opposite. The bible has never been proven to be false, no man in all of history jas been able to prove the bible to be wrong. They might try to discredit it, and claim they have found something false, but there has never been evidence that proves the bibles false. On the contrary the bible is the most validated and proven written literature that the human race has. So where did or who did you believe that told you otherwise? The bibles validity is part of why I accepted objective morality, why back 15 years ago. Then second, As for the lying Christian's, one thing is that everyone lies to a certain degree because we have a sin nature. However, we would have to address each of those claims individually and test then before we could actually make the objective statement that "Christian's are constantly lying, making claims they cannot support." One reason is because there are many Christian's who have made claims that they have been able to support and prove, over and over, despite new atheistic critiques. I agree that some christoams run from uncomfortable discussions, but not because they believe a true bible, but because they are not equipped to give you a good answer. And what I mean by a good answer is one that will somewhat satisfy your question. It's one thing to provide you the evidence, which is easy but the burden is on you because you choose not to believe the literal evidence. That's called cynicism. It would awesome if you were a skeptic and critique the bible from that perspective, but based on your comments it seems that your a cynic. You ask questions not to find an answer, but instead you ask questions to try and prove Christian's wrong, regardless of the evidence they provide you in all of these threads. The fact that you have an "objective moral" opinion about the validity of the bible and Christian's inability to reason with you puts a crack in the very foundation you reason from, and frankly is a contradiction foundation. Much love nick🙇‍♂️💗
@teachingtetelestai
@teachingtetelestai 5 жыл бұрын
@nickj14711 You just proved objective morality by calling Christian's immoral... I dont even think you understand objective morality nick. By what right do you have to call stoning children according to a set of rules immoral? Why do you even care if something is moral or immoral? And if you care, is your opinion only subjective, even though you claim its subjective but make your conclusion objective? Your contracting yourself the same way all athiests do. Also you say CREDIBLE but what you really mean is ACCEPTABLE. The evidence of God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is physically, emotionally and spiritually proven to be credible, however accepting it takes faith, a trust. Same principle with Evolution, micro and macro, Big Bang theory, Strings theory, Theory of Relativity. Those belief systems all take faith to trust in them based on what's presented. Those latter however contradict themselves where as Christianity hasn't even a single contradiction when understood in its entirety.

Jeff didn't even make on cogent point. All he did was badger the kid with inane questions and never let him develop the counter arguments to them. It takes about 2 seconds to make an illogical argument and many, many times longer than that to explain why the argument is illogical. That's why Jeff keeps asking questions, never listening and never letting the other guy develop his counter argument before hitting him with another inane question or argument.

@@briggy4359 What do you mean by transcendent here. If you mean having a source in some supernatural authority , then transcendent morality does not exist IMO. But society definitely has an interest in protecting its young. Also, we have a natural instinct to protect children. Between those I feel confident that people and society will step in to protect children when necessary even in the absence of any idea of there being "transcendent" morality. Morality does in some sense transcend personal opinion as it's determined IMO by a sentient social evolutionary imperative that is not subject to human opinion. Morality is, at it's core anyway, ontologically subjective (mind-dependent), but epistemically objective (not a matter of opinion or fashion).

No his arguments, as much as the uber aggressive Duribin allows him to make them are not ad hoc at all. There was nothing ad hoc about his making the distinction between analytical and synthetic propositions to try and make the point that it's not a contradiction to say there are absolute, universal truths, ie., analytical truths based on the definitions of terms, but the there is no absolute truth, no synthetic worldview that corresponds perfectly with reality. However, before he gets to actually develop his point Durbin, like some kind of hyper- active child, cuts him off with more inane blather about brain fizz.

1) You still have not demonstrated that I lied;therefore, you’re still guilty of the ad hominem abusive fallacy.2) You still have not demonstrated my supposed confirmation bias; therefore, you’re still guilty of the ad hominem abusive fallacy. Furthermore, your usage leads me to believe that you don’t know what the term actually means. Confirmation bias requires a person be aware of evidence contrary to their position and willingly, purposefully ignoring an overwhelming amount evidence. You have not demonstrated this once. 3) Wikipedia is not a credible source. And your use of confirmation bias is flawed. 4) Thank you for admitting you were wrong and that you were guilty of the red herring fallacy.5) A straw man argument is, by definition, an invalid argument. 6) Actually, no, I didn’t just use Christian or even pro-Christian sources. I also used Jewish, Roman, Greek and Samaritan sources in my responses to rohadt Anyad and to you. All of which are anti-Christian sources hostile to Christianity. All of which I cited.7) Sorry, but Richard Carrier is not a credible source when it comes to Christianity. He is mythicizer, believing Jesus to be a myth, despite all evidence to the contrary. His peers in the academic world (like Bart Ehrmann and Gerd Ludemann) all acknowledge Jesus existed, even though they may not agree with specific Christian truth claims about Jesus. This also explains why he doesn't teach history at any accredited college or university.8) First, Antiquities 20.9.1 does not say, according to you, “that he existed according to some people.” It says Jesus was known as the Christ. I cited this passage because it is evidence that Jesus existed, which you denied by affirming rohadt Anyad’s argument in an earlier post. 9) I suspect that you would have addressed all five lines of evidence had you been able to refute them. 10 A video of an unknown, unnamed speaker does not constitute a credible source. 11) Your statement was refuted; just be an honest atheist and admit that without trying to self-justify.12) I’m not surprised I didn’t convince you. You’ve never once taken a fair and honest evaluation of the evidence that Christian apologists or myself have presented. Your presuppositions have been at the forefront of your every response.13) I’ve visited non-Christian websites to see what they have to say. I find, generally speaking, that they offer nothing new and only repeat the same tired, refuted arguments over and over again. Some write better than others and some have better arguments and evidence than others; but when you break it all down, the skeptics a priori beliefs continue to take precedence over the evidence and how its presented.14) As before, your response is filled with unsubstantiated claims and assertions. For example, you say it’s possible to confidently assert that the names were attached to the gospels later in history. But you provide no evidence. You’ve accused me of confirmation bias. But you provide no evidence. Here's a thought for your next response. How about you try responding with actual evidence. How about you try responding to the actual arguments being made. How about you try responding without self-justifying why you were wrong. And how about you try responding without making false accusations or logical fallacies.

This dude, like all Atheists, is arguing because he's fighting for his Right to love his Sin. That's the bottom line. People want to do whatever they want to do without feeling like it's wrong. So instead of changing their Behavior to fit what God wants, they try to change the Truth of who God is. By denying God's existence, they get rid of His will. The saddest part is that everyone knows Internally that God exists. But Externally, they try to convince others AND themselves that they truly believe what they claim to believe. This dude is clearly part of the LGBT Community... and Atheism is a huge part of that Community due to the fact that they really just want to be comfortable in that Sin without having to worry about Consequences.

Great video, brother. Very blessed to see my brothers and sisters challenging atheists. I do have one thought that may help some of these conversations you have. I haven't read through all the comments, so perhaps this has already been mentioned, but I think it may be helpful with unbelievers to help them understand what is meant when the word faith is used. We both know it means having trust or confidence in something based on reasons, but unbelievers, following the lead of Dawkins and others before him, and now more perverted by Boghossian, do not understand the word that way. For them, it must mean belief without evidence, or worse pretending to know what you don't. If this distinction were made, this young man, and others in similar videos, would see that they do have faith in those things you rightly point out to them. I'm sure it won't win the day, but I think clarity and recapturing the real definitions of the words we use is iimportant in our apologetics. Praying for your ministry brother!

Rush Leigh everyone does not know Gods love... just bc they have different beliefs doesn't mean they are arguing... it's our job as Christians to tell people about God.. and Jeff does it beautifully.. he is kind, concerned and intelligent... and how do you know what this will lead to? I'm still watching but I've heard the atheist say 3 times so far that what Jeff said was very interesting.. so he's thinking about it.. this conversation could unite a spark... John 12:48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Mark 16:15-16 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, Colossians 4:5-6 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. You are right about love... and loving each other is sharing God with them...and to do that with atheist you have to get through to them first.. I think Jeff does a excellent job 😊✝️❤️🙏

"how can you think you're a well thought out person and the minute you say "i can't know anything for certain" you don't immediately challenge that thought with some reason?" I think my worldview is well thought out because I put a lot of thinking time into it, even years worth of thinking. When someone says you cannot reasonably be 100% certain of most things, they are not saying you cannot be 99.9% certain. Reason and logic is what leads to the position that it is foolish to be 100% certain when humans are capable of being wrong, and it is usually the dumbest of us that are the most certain their beliefs couldn't ever possibly be wrong. Ironically, they are usually the ones who are wrong the most.

nickj14711 I just simply liked his honesty and his attitude. This discussion was more towards a philosophical perspective. The goal was to get to the train of thought or reality that makes more sense and coherent with reality. No one can obviously make God visibly appear like the Flying Spaghetti Monster. What evidences do you need that will satisfy what you’re looking for? What are you willing to give up in search for truth?

Romans116 It's also a fallacy. Jeff switches the use of the word "certain" to fit his needs. Which basically is lying. Apologists like to do this with "absolutes" aswell. When I say "There are no moral absolute truths" I get the question, "Is that absolutely true? " Which is a shift in the meaning of the word Truth. It is taken out of context. It is a shift from a "moral truth" to a "factual truth". There is a distinct difference between the two. And shifting between them, in order to fit your needs, is fraudulent. I guess Jeff wants to go to Hell, then...

Williams World View Hey look, we are talking about world views that fits coherently. I don’t think these guys are saying you can’t be factually correct or morally correct, etc... they are simply saying systematically it is incompatible with atheism. I 💯% agree with them. It’s a perspective that makes sense. Over on this side from my filters, worldview, logic, reasoning and experiences, atheism is the most ridiculous thing one can take hold of. This isn’t to offend you but to tell you exactly what I believe. No matter what I will respect you as a person as made in God’s image. At best it makes sense to take the side of agnosticism where you don’t know for sure but philosophically, scientifically and even mathematically, it’s impossible for space, time, and matter to converge simultaneously without an intelligent mind behind it, let alone the explanation for life, and the complexities of the universe. It makes 0 coherent sense to believe everything to have existed on its own by itself with no programmer or writer of these codes, fine tuning of laws of the universe. Even if we believe that prior to Big Bang there are multiverses that plunged this universe into existence, you cannot have an infinite regression of causes. There must be an uncaused caused, something or someone not bound by time, space and material. I can also tell you that in my real life experiences I have seen hundreds of supernatural things that confirm scripture. I was a Christian for 18 years, never seen miracles or confirmation of evidences of what Jesus did or what he claims to have done until 2 years ago. I am just like everybody else, searching for truth but believe that I am doing it better and honestly than most people. My nephew born deaf on left ear without an ear canal has been going to therapy for 5 years with 0 improvement. When he turned 6, my brother and I laid hands for prayer just like scripture said and we believed with faith. Moments later he was healed and we have the medical records to prove 100% hearing in both ears. His mom, my sister in law, took scans on her lungs and doctors found scarring and she also has diabetes. When I laid hands in prayer, the power of the Holy Spirit came and nearly knocked her to the floor. Weeks later took another scan and scarring completely disappeared which if know about lung scarring, it never actually goes away. I gave 3 eyewitness to confirm aw well. I have hundreds of stories that you wouldn’t believe. Have casted out many demons out of people, people suffering from depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, sleeping disorder, eating disorders. People with cancer, years of chronic pain and illness. So many surgeries canceled because I prayed and God spontaneously and instantly healed them. If you do not believe me in the Supernatural sense, you need to take a look at Dr Joe Dispenza. He doesn’t claim to be Christian or atheist but he explains the supernatural world and the quantum field and how it’s connected with humanity in the scientific way. But when looking at it closely you can obviously see it makes 0 sense to disconnect God from what’s been created and programmed in the universe. You want proof here’s your proof. If you deny and are a skeptic fine, but don’t be a pessimist and dismiss it just because it conflicts with your world view. Elliott Johnston As a Christian, I’ll say that this pastor knows what we Christians know, and the “atheist” cannot know these things because he’s not taught in the ways of Biblical thinking. He’s a nice guy but just doesn’t “get” Christian ways of looking at life. But how can he, or you, learn about our Creator if no one tells you? We want you to have what we have-joy, peace, and eternal life in Heaven! Only offered while you’re alive; once you die it’s hell, too late! Please don’t reject God.

Elliott Johnston He certainly has a well rehearsed script to throw at people, but it doesn't go much deeper than that. But apparently it's enough, because even if someone knows how to correct him on his fallacious philosophical reasoning like the atheist in this clip, his followers will still eat it up as a "win" as long as he repeats his catch phrases often enough and with sufficient confidence.

whether your an atheist or a Christian, most people have a rehearsed point they use to justify their position. which does not make the point anymore valid, but it probably has more substance due to the longer "brain fizzing" on that point. i don't think there was a winner, i see that people can be better educated on someone else position over a debate. unfortunately we live in an internet world of click bait and trolls. We have to rely on the idea that the past is going to be like the future. Our senses _could_ be lying to us, but given that we have no objective data outside of our senses, we have no other option than to take them as reality, or at least the only thing we can start from.

Good grief this is awful... The christian has no more justification for the laws of logic and reason than does the atheist. Saying that the laws were invented by god is just a cop out, because you still the must justify how you logically came to the conclusion that god exists! The only difference here between the atheist and christian is that the atheist very clearly holds the most parsimonious position.

Thamnophis you can only go as far as the argument allows you to. If the other person doesn't allow the argument to get to morality and proof of God then you can't just take it there because you're stronger there. The point isn't for Jeff to show how much he knows, but to get the Atheist to understand the failure in his claim, and if it gets to morality it gets to morality.

Tyler Josephson, once again: the difference between the atheist and theist is the additional presupposition of a deity IN ADDITION TO the presupposition of reason. Both parties use reason, but one party adds an extra assumption, that the laws of reason work only because of some supernatural being that can neither be observed nor falsified. The difference here is that there is literally no evidence that will sway the theist out of his or her position, whereas there IS evidence that will sway the atheist.

"Saying that the laws were invented by god is just a cop out, because you still the must justify how you logically came to the conclusion that god exists!" What are your saying here? It sounds nonsensical. The Christian is saying that God created the human mind to operate consistent with the principles of logic, which explains the intelligibility of science, logic and morality. Whereas, atheism assumes the human brain formed with these capacites from an impossibly unlikely unguided evolutionary process acting on primordial slime. It's about inference to the best explanation.
@thamnophis7324
@thamnophis7324 6 жыл бұрын
JP atheists do not assume the brain was created through evolution, they theorize that it was, based on numerous lines of independent evidence... BUT, if you want to presuppose that logic was made by God, you still have to justify God's existence; otherwise you are just moving the goalpost. Once again, both the atheist and theist assume that reason can help lead to reliable and valid results, but the theist must nest the added assumption that there is a god who created reason.
@JP4truth

_"if you want to presuppose that logic was made by God"_ Thamnophis your reading comprehension is very poor. The issue isn't about God making logic, but rather about God making the human mind with the _capacity_ to understand logic. _"BUT, if you want to presuppose that logic was made by God, you still have to justify God's existence"_ No, no no...the Christian is suggesting the capacities of the human brain _are_ an argument for the existence of God. _"Once again, both the atheist and theist assume that reason can help lead to reliable and valid results, but the theist must nest the added assumption that there is a god who created reason."_ No, no no...theists aren't "nesting" in an "assumption," they are suggesting that, based on the evidence, God creating the human brain is a *better* explanation for the brain's capacities than theorizing that these capacities originated from an impossibly unlikely unguided evolutionary process acting on primordial slime
