Apoorva Gokhale: Raag Alhaiya Bilawal

Apoorva Gokhale was the featured artiste representing the Gwalior gharana at the FEA-curated LEGACY concert. This, her second piece of the morning session was a beautiful traditional composition in Raag Alhaiya Bilawal.
Apoorva was accompanied by Swapnil Bhise on tabla and Anant Joshi on harmonium. Tanpura and vocal support were provided by her students Soumya Ullal-Kantak and Amritha Shenoy-Kamath.

Through her training with multiple maestros, Apoorva ji has developed a very unique and poignant khayal singing aesthetic. However this is the first time I could clearly discern the influence of Pt Ulhas Kashalkar in her music.

Yes it is indeed Tilwada. Tilwada and Jhumra are the most common taals for vilambit khayal.

This bandish seems to be learnt from Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar. And she belongs to the family of Musicians.

This is a traditional bandish of Gwalior (with a Deshkar-like 'sam' on the Dhaivat. Musicologist, Kumarprasad Mukherjee, has mentioned in his memoirs that the legendary Shankar Pandit taught this bandish to his disciple, Balasaheb Poonchwaale, on the first day of 'ganda-bandhan'.
