Donnie, your stories about your family always touches my heart and reminds me of the hard times I had growing up . I'm thankful that my daddy was a good hunter because that put the food on our table. We lived off turkey, squirrel and deer hash ,it was amazing what you could do with a tater and a onion . A pot of butter beans , pintoes and cornbread cooked on a wood stove fed a family of eight many times. We drew names at school too,we usually gave a box of chocolate covered cherries as a gift. My late father used to tell me how he'd have snow on his bed covers when he woke up in the morning. If you got up too late, you'd lose a place around the stove pipe the went up through the 2nd floor. Thanks for sharing, Donnie!

Thank you Donnie, for reminding us how much simpler Christmas was back then. When I was 9 my dad got me a stephens 410. I remember that he was gone working so much more before Christmas that year, and it took me a while to understand why. He had to make extra money just to pay for that gun. The realization served to help me grow up a lot that year. By the time I turned 12 I was working at a gas station so I could help dad pay moms hospital bills. It wasn’t much, but it made me feel like I was doing something to help.

You know back in the day before I was born life was hard all over. It was hard, but hunting to put food on the table and odd jobs your dad was rich. Maybe not in the sense of money, but sense in what counts. Your dad had love and good set of morals and he worked hard to pass that on to you. When you talk about your family reminds me of all the people down in the Appalachia area and they all turned out awesome. When you talk about your family you can just feel the warmth of a fire flickering in the stove, hot chocolate, and everyone gathered around the tree. Gifts given from the heart small that they may have been but given with love. You talk about history a time where things were simple and everyone helped and knew each other, tis not so anymore. Thank you for sharing a bit of history about your dad and yes his chocolate bar Merry Christmas. Stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

I remember asking my mom about the depression when I was small. She couldn't and didn't know about the depression. They lived in a small 1 room tiny house. They never went hungry unless they had a bad harvest but there was heat in the winter and creeks,cool water in the summer. She didn't know they were dirt poor....when I was growing up neither did I. Mama just kept telling me to be grateful I was an only child. But I was sure lonely. My husband baby daughter and I all 3 of us held hands in 3 different states. 😊😊God Bless Mr Donnie.

What a sweet and funny story, and sad too! When I was a girl living in Virginia, the grandma of my little friend who lived down the street told us a story of how poor her family was, and on Christmas Eve, she saw left over trees in a closed Christmas tree lot, so she dragged one home. They had nothing to decorate it, but they did happen to have some dog biscuits, so they decorated the tree with that. I never forgot that story.

Thanks Mr. Donnie. I miss the old ways. We were better off financially than some,because my mother went to work in a sewing factory 7 years before I was born. Both parents working in factories made for a bit easier times. But,I so wanted a stay at home mom like most of my school mates had. We had 6 kids in my family and Dad always planted/tended a huge garden. Mom and some of the kids canned everything in that garden. Even though both parents worked,times were still tight. I miss those times where your word and handshakes sealed a deal. When neighbors helped each other. Folks nowadays are missing out on that. Good morning Donnie sir. I pray that you and your family are doing great Amen 🙏. I was going to go huntin this morning but not feeling well I had the third treatment the other day. I got to finish the treatments even though the scan showed no cancer. There are cells that are too small to be detected so guess I’ll finish taking them. Better safe than sorry

I have a creek like that on back of my property but it is at bottom of hill on my property I used to love going and seeing it run and it is such a soothing place to hear it running but I am no longer able to walk down to see it anymore so I appreciate your videos are a beautiful reminder of times gone by thank you for doing these videos

Enjoyed this ! At lunch wife and I were talking about how ungrateful so many people in our country are today from having such an easy life while growing up. Those unfortunate days of hardships from depression and war service shaped a society of hardworking, thankful people, knowing how to appreciate a lifestyle that was earned. Wife and I been to Cumberland Gap a couple of time, enjoyed the area!
