A few of the phrases my uncle used to use ... "If you stand too close to the band, you're bound to get hit by a fiddle" - Means mind your own business - "Will you carry me home?" - Means give me a ride home - "Trot it around the barn yard and let's see how it gaits" - Means tell me your idea.

I’m living in Southern NJ now and people question some of my phrases and sayings-one that always gets me a cross eyed look is when I say “Carry” for “Take” as in I’ll carry you somewhere; not I’ll take you somewhere…In hearing some of these sayings, I can’t believe how many I’ve heard and used! I think my father used just about all 60!😊 Thank you for all your hard work Sir.

Thank you Donnie for a walk down memory lane. I grew up in the mountains of western PA and am of Eastern European decent. My dad used a lot of these phrases. His guiding principle for my brother and me was, “Always guard what your name stands for. It’s the only thing you can carry with you the rest of you life.” I still try to do that today and raised my son on that same principle. God bless.

My family was from Virginia to West Virginia and my grandma said these sayings and a few more which rubbed off on my mama and her sisters and I learned these from them. I say many of these mostly on a regular basis. I get looks at the store or in a crowd . The more relaxed I become the more of these sayings seem to surface. But I’m proud of who I am and where I come from. Appalachian thru and thru! Always will be!!

Like pig in a poke my grandma used call pig in the blanket she called it pig in a poke. Love the videos. I used a couple of them today. Now that do as I say not what I do confused the heck out of me. Those sayings were used to control because most of the time they were not doing what was said. The what you did still sticks with me at 83. Love you Mr. Donnie. God bless.

I've heard and used so many of these sayings. Mom and dad used to say- they'd argue with a sign post, if that didn't work they'd take the sign out and argue with the hole. Independent as a hog on ice watch em bust their butt. Daddy used to say if you stick your head in the sand it leaves your butt to get kicked. I'm not putting my dog in that hunt.- that means I'm not getting in that argument or I'm not having anything to do with that. If folks won't accept help you just have to let them crap and fall back in it. I'm old enough I still use most of the sayings and phrases you mentioned and these. I'm sure there's others I can't recall right now. Folks think I'm backwards but I know I'm hammering the right nail, lol I'm proud of my raising. Thanks for sharing these, I hope folks enjoy them as much as I did, and maybe they'll try out some of them too. Stay safe and GOD bless

I heard just about all these sayings from my grandparents from southeastern Kentucky. When I’m really tired my accent really comes out or if I pronounce certain words or phrases. When I visit my oldest son’s friends in Chicago really find it amazing how an educated woman still speaks that way!

the fact that im not from appalachia but got the meaning of the most of these immediately, shows you how much people mixed and migrated in america, and how common sense is the same all around the world, only in different languages, and mostly in pretty zesty words, since its the simple people who had to use common sense mostly to figure their lives out. again a wonderful video, donny!

My mother used to the word “cairn” a lot. Like something smells like cairn (?spelling?). Or that cairny thing. I finally figured out it is mountain pronunciation of carrion, carcass, or road kill. A deal decaying animal that the vultures eat. I love the Appalachian language. It’s so pure.

Thank you, this was great. I knew all of these saying except one. When I used to live in Ohio people some people would think I was from the deep south because of some of my sayings and my accent. I live in WV and grew up hearing and learning these sayings and many more like them. Made some good friends there and was known as a county girl. Crazy like a fox . I really like these videos you make. Keep up the great work. God bless you and yours.

LOL wow this is like I am listening to my Grandparents in Alabama. My father's family is from the woods of South Alabama and are Choctaw/Porch Creek and I have heard all of these saying forever. I even use them now without thinking and then have to tell people what it means hahaha. Thank you so much for this memory. Have you heard the "finer than a frogs hair?" I had to tell some Brits what it means the other day.
