My apple cobbler with cake mix and pie filling recipe is easy and absolutely delicious! This dump cake style cobbler can be made with only three ingredients, but adding a few extra things elevates this from good to great. The filling is full of flavor, and the cake mix topping is crispy, crunchy, and buttery. If you are looking for a quick and simple apple cobbler recipe that is perfect for beginner cooks, especially as a last minute Thanksgiving dinner dessert, look no further.
Like I said, this dump cake apple cobbler with cake mix recipe really only needs three ingredients: canned pie filling, cake mix, and butter. What makes this recipe so easy is that there is no prep work and no mixing: all you have to do is pour or "dump" the ingredients into a casserole dish one at a time, building layers of flavor along the way.
The first layer is the pie filling. I poured the cans of apple pie filling into the casserole dish, then spread out the filling and cut up any apple slices that were larger than the others. I then tasted the filling: it was good, but I thought I could take it to the next level. By adding a bit of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and lemon juice, along with a bit of brown sugar, I doctored up the storebought apple pie filling so that it tasted homemade.
After mixing in the spices and brown sugar, I moved on to the cake mix topping. Since there was no pie crust to roll out, I simply opened the box of white cake mix and dumped it over the cobbler. I distributed the cake mix as evenly as I could, taking care not to pack it down into the apples.
Once the cake mix was evenly spread across the top of the apple filling, it was time for the butter. I took two sticks of butter and cut them into very small slices, about 3 or 4 slices per tablespoon of butter. I then covered the cake mix with the thin slices of butter so that they could seep into the cake mix as the cobbler baked in the oven. Although it may be tempting to slice the butter a bit thicker and put fewer pieces on top of the cobbler, the butter is likely to melt more down than out, leaving some areas of the crust without butter.
When I pulled the apple cobbler out of the oven, I could see that the cake mix topping had turned beautifully golden brown. When I took the first bite, I realized that the wonderful combination of sweet apples, flavorful spices, and buttery cake mix worked together in perfect harmony.
In all honesty, this cobbler was a bit on the sweet side. The apple pie filling has sugar, as did the cake mix. I then added 1/4 cup of extra brown sugar, so there was definitely no lack of sugar in this recipe. Although this recipe was sweeter than the fruit pies and cobblers I normally make, the spices and butter helped to cut through the sweetness.
This apple cobbler with cake mix and pie filling recipe was definitely delicious, but the main advantage of this recipe is that it is so easy to make. Storebought apple pie filling means you don't have to wash, peel, or cut apples, and using a box of cake mix means that there is no rolling out pie crust. That makes this apple cobbler the perfect last-minute dessert for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any day. It's delicious on its own, with whipped cream, or even ice cream.
So, if you are looking for an apple cobbler recipe that is easy and can feed a crowd, be sure to give this one a try. 🍎🍏🍰👨‍🍳🧈

Hi Folks! I made this cake today, and I used a carrot cake mix instead of yellow, because that's all I had, besides chocolate mix!! I used canned caramel apple pie filling instead of regular apple filling, also because that is all I had. My "This Is All I Had" Dump Cake came out fantastic. The carrot cake mix was spicy with bits of carrot and raisins in it, and the caramel apple filling added an extra layer of flavor. I did add more apple pie spice and It really added that extra zing of flavor.

Hi, Parnell! Dump cakes are the best, you can't beat them for how easy they are. I like to use spice cake with the apple sometimes. If I wasn't dieting, 2 sticks of butter all the way! Lol I like how you added the lemon juice. I am the same way and like to add some spices to jazz them up! Drizzling melted butter is how I do it but I think your method of placing the butter in slices on top is a great idea! It looks delicious, I'm glad you enjoyed your first dump cake! 🍎

What are your thoughts about putting turbinado sugar on top of the cake mix but under the butter? Would it make a difference?
@ParnellTheChef
@ParnellTheChef Жыл бұрын
Hi, Mark! I think you could add the turbinado sugar, but depending on your tastes, it might make the dump cake too sweet since both the cake mix and apple pie filling have sugar in them. If I were to add turbinado sugar, I would probably add it on top of the butter. If you take a look at my old-fashioned, double-crust fruit pies here on my channel, I almost always add 2 Tablespoons of sugar (1 light brown, 1 white) on top of the crust. It caramelized slightly in the oven, toning down the sweetness. It adds a bit of extra sweetness and a good amount of crunch.🍎🍏🍰👨‍🍳🧈

Can you melt the butter and pour it over the top?
@ParnellTheChef
@ParnellTheChef Жыл бұрын
Hi, Gloria! That's a good question. Technically, yes, but it will be very difficult to distribute it evenly. If some of the cake mix doesn't get any butter, it's going to turn out very dry. Honestly, I think that laying the slices of butter on the top like I show in the video is probably the best way, or maybe freezing the butter, grating it on a cheese grater, and then sprinkling it on top. Let me know what you decide to do and how it turns out! 👨‍🍳😎🙂

Can we MELT the butter, BLEND it thoroughly into the cake mix -- and then SPREAD it evenly over the pie filling? This might be simpler & quicker -- but would this method ruin or diminish the TASTE of the cake layer?
@ParnellTheChef
@ParnellTheChef 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Ramon! That's a great question. I've never tried it, but my guess is that the topping wouldn't turn out as crispy or crumbly as it does by placing small pads of cold butter on top. I know this is a cobbler, not a crumble, but the texture of the topping is similar to a crumble, and most crumble recipes call for mixing in cold butter, not melted, due to fears that melted butter would change the texture. Like I said, this is a good question. Someone would have to try one day to see how it would work out. So, in short, my chef instincts tell me that mixing the cake mix with melted butter and then spreading it over the filling wouldn't give you the same results...but it'd be an interesting experiment. Let me know how your cobbler turns out!🍎🍏

Also…. 1.5 hours seems like a long time. Was the topping dry at all?
@ParnellTheChef
@ParnellTheChef Жыл бұрын
Yes, 1.5 hours is a long time. I baked it so long since one side didn't seem to be browning very much. Most of my other dump cakes I bake at 350F for 1 hour, so maybe it would have been 1hour and 15 minutes for this one if both sides had browned evenly. All ovens are different, but I would take a look at 1 hour and see how it's doing. I don't see it taking less than 1 hour, so my guess is 60-75 minutes. Let me know how your dump cake turns out! 👍😀

Why don't you gently mix all the apple and extra spice ingredients into a separate bowl before you DUMP it into the baking dish? I let the butter (2 sticks) come to room temperature and then in a separate bowl combine the butter and cake mix and gently combine into a crumbly mix, then cover the top of the apples, DON'T PAT DOWN! All the cake mix is covered with butter, it covers perfectly! (I use fresh apples it is always the perfect sweetness, no added sugar.)
@ParnellTheChef
@ParnellTheChef Жыл бұрын
Hi! I think you could mix the fruit filling off to the side, but then that would dirty a bowl. Some people might not consider this to be a true "dump" cake then, but I agree, that is a good idea. Mixing the butter and cake mix into a crumble is a good idea as well, but once again, it doesn't fit the normal definition of a dump cake recipe. Like I said, all of those are good ideas. If you make this recipe with the changes you have in mind, let me know!🍎🍏
