There are a lot of benchmarks and numbers about the new M1 Mac Mini computer. But how does it perform in a real life situation for music production, streaming and recording? Here are my thoughts.
UPDATE 1: MOTU released a driver for the Midi Express 128. I got the beta test version before and can confirm that it works fine! motu.com/download
UPDATE 2: Please don´t get mad about my RAM statement. I know that the Mac Mini and MacOS can deal with RAM very efficently and I am no IT expert to talk about the pros and cons here. My argument should have been "you can´t upgrade the RAM later, so get the big one instead of regretting it later". All efficiency aside: when you work with video projects and sample libraries more RAM is good. That is the point I was trying to make.
This is a list of everything that I tested and I can confirm that it works:
HARDWARE:
RME Fireface 802
RSHTECH USB Hub 3.0 (amzn.to/2TuMQAA)
Ableton Push 2
Elgato Streamlink 4k
Midi Fighter Twister
Arturia Keystep / Microfreak
Waldorf Iridium (I stop the list here, all class compliant midi devices work)
SOFTWARE (latest versions):
Ableton Live 11
Bitwig 4
OBS
all U-He products
all TAL products
all Valhalla DSP products
Ozone 9
Arturia V-Collection
Arturia Pigments
Spectrasonics Omnisphere

With the increasing popularity this video gets more and more off-topic comments. For the first time ever on this channel I had to delete insulting comments. I don´t want to tell you which computer you should get, I just want to tell you how it works for me and why I decided to use this configuration. If you feel offended by a computer review please get your problems sorted out instead of attacking other people. I will go back to making music now, most questions have been answered here somewhere.

This review helped me tremendously. I was wondering the same thing: Mac Mini vs MacBook Pro and had pretty much come to the same conclusion that Mini would work best for my audio/video needs. I am buying the Mini this week. Thanks for doing such an eloquent job of stating why it works for you and what it does do. Well done.

I have the M1 8gb as thats all I could afford at the time & Music wasn't my main focus.. I only use the Mini for Music tho to be clear. I have only got one project to hit 12gb of ram.. MANY phase plants vitals & serums 0 issues. I got the speeddrum VST as this enabled me to reduce the kits I have to its core samples. & reuse RAM usage I also prefer this to other options. I use the Logic Pro X samplers for loop chopping & larger sample dumps. I am yet under normal use find this little things limit. I can Edit video almost as fast as I can on my 4k custom built PC. I have some VST's that are only rosetta & I could not tell you the difference. I completed 3 psy dub tracks & not even using 30% of the CPU but using about 7GB of ram. so if you are looking for a dedicated music rig then get more RAM like he says 8gb of samples is 8GB of samples. But I have to say the 8GB of ram is not bad at all if you don't mind taking care of what you are doing. I have found that when I am using more than 8GB of RAM the disk use is not even as bad as having safari or Firefox open with many tabs of videos cued.. So my conclusion is that the browsers hit the SSD harder than a huge track with loads of stuff going on. I have never seen it draw more than 30w that was only because I was hitting a bench mark.. rendering videos you name it and its using nothing... My Pc uses more on standby than the MacMini at full stress.. for me its a total win!!!! I am bias as I love the Mac & I regret having to use the PC when I do windows is horrid compared to Mac OS.. but that is my opinion.. Fully recommend a Mac mini! if you need to save the cash 8gb is fine but 16 will serve you better!

That’s pretty amazing what you’ve thrown at your M1, when it comes to production and content creation. It helps validate my purchase of the Mac mini earlier this year, and for the most part I have very few issues. I love the fact that I have to focus less on the tech issues and more on just creating. Much appreciated!

Thank you for this video Martin and I am very grateful for your effort to make it. Fortunately, I didn’t see the negative comments. Really trying to limit what I let in while still being aware of the world we’re livin’ in. I have mainly been a collector of boxes that I thought would save me over the past 30 years though nothing has jelled into a functional system. I have an Express 128, Roland A50, M - Audio Keyrig 49, AKAI LPK25 Edirol FA101 etc etc And now my early 2011 MacBook Pro, no battery, (swollen) is starting to show its age. Music production is a wish list item, I am a working Actor and must self tape so video has become the priority. I will continue to watch you and others and hopefully I can move the needle and achieve a functional music production home studio.

Martin, this review is GOLDEN. Thank you! I've been holding out for the MB Pro, or a 27inch M1 that I can upgrade to 64 Gigs of RAM. Its encouraging that you are able to run instances of CPU intensive software (Pigments, Omnisphere, Serum) without chronic drop outs with your 8 gig M1 :) I also own a Motu midi interface (and Native instruments Apps) and was SHOCKED to hear about the lack of M1 support. I will be hounding Motu for movement in this space. I'll also put a bug in Apple's ear about these vendors. Its a win-win sales bonanza for both Apple and Motu to address compatibility with the M1. Again, thanks for the detailed review :)

Your video is impressive sir. Very articulate and informative. Its quite impressive what your M1 Mini is handling. Thanks for sharing. A lot of people on the tube are saying M1 isnt great for serious pro work but its very clear the M1 is capable of that and more. I mean, maybe not if youre editing multiple 4k streams of vid, but audio? Its CLEARLY handling even very demanding needs. Put it this way, Im running a late 2012 Macbook Pro Retina, 70+ tracks in Pro Tools, at 96k, and only bottleneck if i run my mastering chain(Ozone) on the mixbuss simultaneously. My new M1 iMac arrives tomorrow. If my old machine handles 90% of my needs, Im confident M1 will handle anything I can throw at it.

I can’t speak for MOTU or Native Instruments but big companies like that have a much longer development cycle than the smaller ones and I suppose a lot depends on how much advance notice they got from Apple of the M1’s release. Having written that, of course Da Vinci Resolve manages to work......However, this is a very comprehensive video, Martin. Great work as usual!

I’ve been using my Mac mini M1 for six months in Ableton and things are working smoothly overall. Sometimes I’ve had strange USB and Thunderbolt drop-outs after waking the computer from sleep, but things always work after a reboot. All in I’d definitely make the same choice again, the M1 chip is such a welcome update for me as long time Mac mini user. Since I steer clear of Native Instruments (I’m definitely an Arturia man) I haven’t had any issues with software compatibility. I have noticed strange spikes in CPU usage when using massive sample libraries but I assume that’s due to paging since RAM memory is limited to 16GB. In such situations I just freeze and flatten those channels as soon as possible. Recently I’ve achieved 50+ channel projects with smooth playback, with some of the channels using CPU hungry VSTs such as Softube Model 84/72 synths. The price to performance ratio of the M1 Mac mini for music production is unmatched as far as I’m concerned, especially if you’re into iOS synths which work perfectly as external instruments in Ableton.

I've worked on Windows machines for almost 20 years, although as a designer I naturally preferred the Mac until then. But the price/performance ratio was better for Windows in the meantime. In addition to music productions, mainly in Cubase, I've also been making timelapse recordings with a gigantic wealth of data for the past year. Of all my computers, whether Mac or Windows, the M1 manages this the fastest. It took me a long time to push him to the limit. A few days ago I downloaded the augmented voices and strings from NI. In a project with 30 to 40 tracks, the M1 then also begins to scratch. I reduced the setting to 5 tracks and then it works again. I'm curious where the journey with the new Macs will go.

We run many programs and plug-ins at work like you do, but we only track 1 or 2 channels at a time on a mac tower with 64Gb of RAM. I was always wondering if a mac mini would have enough capabilities to run all of my work loads at home with less RAM, and I couldn't have found your review at a better time. Thanks again for the great review! Mac mini it is!

Mach weiter so 👍

Vielen Dank! Ich habe selbst lange mit Windows gearbeitet und denke, dass beide Systeme ihre Vorteile haben. Am Ende kommt es darauf an dass man das eigene System gut kennt und damit arbeiten kann. :) Liebe Grüße!

Very reassuring. Just pulled the trigger on a Mac Mini - M2 - 1TB system drive - 24gig Ram. Particularly pleased to learn that stacking USB isn’t an issue, I’m transitioning from a PC so braced for unforeseen problems!

Hi Martin, thank you for your great review of the Mac mini. I bought one 3 month ago and had the same experience. Everything in my set up worked fine except my Motu ultralight MK3. Your right about Motu. I feel they have been very lazy and almost ditched there loyal customers to try and sell there new Mk5. I’m not staying with Motu. Great set up by the way. 👍

This is the best video so far on this subject that I’ve seen. I’ll still probably wait for the next M1x Mac mini and for Ableton and NI to update their software to work natively.

@hypnopad

@@mrjonez5364 The way I understand it, most things will work with the help of the Rosetta 2 translator app but will run way better when the companies recode their software to run natively on the M1 chip.
