Apple Power Mac G3 Blue and White Repair and Restoration

Arriving in January 1999, Apple's Blue & White Power Mac Was an instant hit. 20+ Years later though and these machines are in need of some TLC. In this video, I take a look a one of two Blue & White Machines I have, strip it down and give it a good clean, before reassembling it and sorting a damaged Hard Drive.

I have 3 of these. I bought them 3 years ago and stuffed them in storage. I intended to fix them up but life got in the way. This is my favorite Mac case although the Mac Pro 5,1 is a close second. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the reply. The G3 B&W really is gorgeous. I have three as well, though the last arrival is in poor shape. I’ve also a Mac Pro 5,1 waiting for a little light recommissioning, and it’s a beast of machine.

I had a blue and white PowerMac G3 that was upgraded to the G4. I had it made so it said G4 on the side of it. Today I have a MacPro 2012 with Dual 3.46Gb Xeon CPUs, 48GB ram, RX590 8Gb running MacOS 14.3.1(Sonoma). 😀

Nice video. I have the same computer (formally my work computer in the 90s) but I will be gutting it out and putting new up-to-date parts inside to run the latest Mac software. Great to see how easily it came apart so I can follow your guide for that. There are a few mods using this case on the Internet

Thanks, I really appreciate you comment. The G3 case is great to work on and in, and it’s much nicer looking that a lot of Apple’s later power mac cases. I may see about modding an old G3 case myself one day. :)

This looks superb, I’m very jelous! The internal chassis of my G3 is nowhere near as clean, the metal cage has tarnished quite heavily despite attempts at cleaning it. Yours looks like new :)

Yeah. Both G3 B&W machines I have cleaned up nicely. The one on the video spent time at a printers. It was clean but damn it smelt of toner! It also came with a G4 graphite that also needs cleaning and smells of printer toner! The graphite machines haven’t made it onscreen yet!

The G4’s are great. I’ve got all three model lines and the MDD is one of my favourites.

It’s very therapeutic, but all told it took me two days to strip down both of my G3s, clean then reassemble. I now have a 3rd B&W that needs a much heavier restoration as it arrived in a very bad state.

Very interesting video! I really liked the old design of Mac Computers, I kinda wish they kept the styling for a bit longer. Though I do like their future designs.

Yeah. It’s a pretty great design, even nearly 25 years later. The whole family of G4 power Macs are a joy to work on, and I’ve a 1.25ghz quicksilver that desperately needs fixing coming up soon. But the G3 B&W is a thing if beauty.
