Passkeys sync via iCloud, and are available on Windows. Apple also includes a Chrome extension on both Windows and Mac to enable autofill. Sherlock story was little off, Apple created Sherlock 1.0 (back on Mac OS 9) to search your hard disk. When Mac OS X shipped it came with Sherlock 2.0 to again, search your files. Another company (Karelia) created Watson, an application to search the web and directly into websites, like Amazon, eBay, etc. and present the results right in a native Mac app. When Mac OS X 10.2 came out file search moved to the Finder and Sherlock 3.0 was released basically duplicating Watson by pivoting to web search. Watson was Sherlocked.

Leo is wrong. Apple released a search application called Sherlock in 1998. Karelia Software released Watson in 2001, which allowed searches containing Internet content. About eleven months later, Apple incorporated Watson’s features into Sherlock 3. Watson disappeared, having been “Sherlocked”.

Bingo. I came to the comments to say this too. Good job with the details.

I think what Leo was simply trying to convey is that Apple has a history of adding new features to existing apps or creating new apps entirely that become part of the Apple ecosystem eliminattng the need to pay monthly or yearly license fees to third party companies that may have initially offered similar functionality. But that's how the Big Apple rolls, baby.

@@db4a Of course, that’s exactly the point Leo was making. But he got the details of the “Sherlock” story significantly wrong. Furthermore, it had nothing to do with Spotlight, which came into being a couple years later.

Sherlock did Internet searches as well, from version 1.0. But Watson added additional functionality.

Yup. I use both ios's current password stash and Lastpass. ios is kinda a backup for many but not all. I'm multi platform so not changing that any time soon.

Currently on my Apple devices when I go to a new website, the operating system suggests a complex password. Then it’s automatically synced across all my devices. It works most, but not all the time. All the passwords are easily found under the Settings app. When I go back to the site, the username and password are automatically available. How is this new Password manager going to differ from that?

It will be in a separate app and have a better interface. Having it in settings is pretty conviluted.

@@timhershel2940no, it’s really not. It does take a couple of clicks. Open Settings, click on passwords and you’re there. How is this convoluted?

Low got the Sherlocked thing wrong. Apple had Sherlock. They stopped using it with OS X. Then a developer came out with software called Watson (he couldn’t really use Sherlock for that as Apple owned the trademark). But then Apple reintroduced similar features to Sherlock, which Watson had copied (funny how nobody got upset about that!). Then, people got upset and said that Apple sherlocked him.

Not upset (likely) b/c Watson represented a superset of features as Apple’s early Sherlock implementation…. much the way some mail apps have Apple Mail features PLUS.

It’s not an iCloud for Windows password app. There is already an iCloud for Windows application, with extensions for Edge and Chrome to autofill information. I haven’t seen Apple promising any changes to this application. Only macOS Sequoia users will get a Passwords application.

I've been using iCloud Password Manager on iPad, iPhone, Mac and Windows for ages, it's secure and works perfectly across each of those devices. This episode seems to be a bunch of outdated rambling on.

It seems you missed the Apple keynote when they announced the separate Password manager taking it out of the setting page and adding a nice GUI to encourage more people to use it and to have continuous development and add more features with time, which is great!

Because security freaks tend to keep using old tech. as they’re safer when new tech. keep adding telemetry and location tracking. Some presidents use old Nokia 3310 with no internet and smart features. New is not always the best in every aspect.
