Firstly, i really don't think 4k vs 5k really makes a difference on a 27" display. Secondly, you can't just charge double the price just for slightly better built quality. Samsung and Huawei really make high quality displays. Function over form is my funda.

I currently use the Cinema screen (1440) which I purchased 11 years ago when I moved away from Windows. I purchased an 11” MBA, wireless kb, trackpad and mouse. It has all worked flawlessly for 11 years, it all still looks new and modern. I am about to go to M2 MBA and 27” Studio. I paid $1000 for the Cinema Screen in 2010 and never regretted it. This new 5k is about $1600 which is about the same price in constant dollars and I don’t need to fiddle around with add on camera, speakers, mic etc. It is all there. I will turn 80 soon so this might be my last set up. I am sticking with what has served me well. The 5k will be great for my eyes. I have seriously studied the Dell 2723QE 4K which looks very nice too but in the end I will use this for a lot of years as I have my last set up. Now I must find a use for my Cinema Screen! It is still awesome and like new still. The Intel MBA (3 years old) already has a new home ready. Really enjoyed your review. Well produced and very helpful.

I still use the 2007 30" Cinema display -- with windows 11 (and 10 and 8 and vista and xp and 2000) and it works great! Never in the last15 years have I missed having any control over the display. It has been flawless and no matter how often I look at the studio display or the pro display, I have to say, why would I?

Update. It turned out that the head of school at our church school needed a computer upgrade so she got the entire set up, monitor, MBAir, kb, trackpad, mouse and optical drive. It was exactly what she needed. I got a deduction! My M2 MBAir plus Studio monitor and new peripherals all work so well. I added a Samsung SSD as my Time Machine. The monitor sits on a low level aluminum base which includes more front facing ports for USB A and C, card reader etc. it’s really a perfect set up for me. Update: I paid nearer $1300 for the monitor. Got a “refurbished” deal from Apple.

Great point! I noticed that the M1 Max 16 inch Macbook pro will do noise reduction to smoothen the skin and it looks great on calls. I've been so confused on why the Studio display's webcam is getting bad reviews, but it makes sense now. If the studio display has the A13, either it hasn't been optimized or it isn't as good as the A14 chip in neural engine/ISP tasks. The new M1 chips should have the bandwidth to able to that processing to the display.

I ended up buying one. I love macOS but it never felt right with 3rd party monitors. Waking them up, plastic, poor speakers etc. I really wanted a monitor that was plug and play, with no fuss on the Mac. My favorite setup was always the 17 inch MBP and the Apple Cinema Display. This basically replicates that for me with a 16 inch MBP and the Studio Display.

Great review of the new Studio display! Thought I would add that in the past all Apple Cinema monitors were not fully functional or controllable when connected to Windows computers. Last Mac Cinema Display that I had was in late 2010 to go with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I really liked the integration! Am getting a new base model Mac Studio (+ 2TB drive) and of course the Studio display with the nano textured coating and ability to adjust the height. My old and last MacBook Pro in mid 2010 had the mat finish on the screen. I’ve always loved the mat finish - even when we had to develop 35mm film into photos! 😂

Was considering this. Using a MacBook myself and a Windows machine for work. But the brightness adjustment issues on Windows mean this really isn't suitable for me. I have a separate webcam anyway. But I thought it would be nice to have everything integrated in the monitor. And not just the webcam, but also good speakers and a USB hub. I'd happily pay a premium for the Apple build quality as well. But I was already on the edge considering the price (was browsing Facebook Marketplace to look for used ones), and then the brightness issues make it a no-go. The LG UltraFine 5K also seems quite popular. At least, prices for used ones are also quite high. So.. not sure about that either. Guess I might end up with a 4K screen instead.

It lacks a lot of what I want. Higher update frequency , HDR among other things. But nobody seems to care that it has 5K. And appearance and sound are also important to me. Hi, there is no on and off switch, does that mean you need to keep de monitor plugged in at all times, or could you use a brick with a switch. Will a brick with a switch do harm to the monitor if you use it regularly, because when I leave the house normally I switch everything off. Also what is the power draw if you keep it plugged in? Could you also check if it possible to hook a Nintendo Switch via a "HDMI to USB Type-C 4K60Hz Active Adapter M/F" up to the monitor and see if it works wit sound and all. Thanks in advance, good luck.

sweet. look forward to saving up and buying on the second hand market in 2 years. If Apple actually had proper scaling then a 4k would be absolutely fine but fuck Apple for making me get a 5k monitor to have more real-estate without blurry UI lines. The lack of features will be a deal-breaker for the vast majority of people who’re in the market for a new monitor. The studio display is overpriced, the built-in webcam is mediocre, there’s no HDR support, it uses an IPS panel instead of mini LED, there’s no promotion support. In 2023, most other brands wouldn’t dare to sell a 60Hz monitor in this price range to mainstream consumers.

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

Great video and I agree. I'm a mac user but this display is too pricey for it's feature set. It doesn't serve MacBook/Mac mini users since it is too expensive, and Mac Studio users don't get HDR or high refresh rate but get speakers and a noisy webcam in favor of Center Stage which is less useful on a desktop than a tablet. Seems like Apple just didn't want to make a larger iMac but wanted to charge that same price for the monitor minus the mac, keyboard and mouse/trackpad. Great build quality but too expensive and a feature set that doesn't really address any segment of mac users perfectly.

If it was 30 inches with HDR and 120 refresh rate yes but as configured hell no. back in 2000 I bought my first Mac a G4 Cube and 15 inch Cinema display which lasted 8 years.

Curious, why do you think there's going to be new displays on offer? An XDR display update?

So, I've seen this in a few videos now. On a smooth surface, it looks like the Studio Display moves SUPER easily instead of staying put. Any thoughts here?

Studio Display has enough friction to not slide around on a smooth surface but it moves easily, which is a good thing. I can tell this because I'm using one right now.

I'm having issues using the LG 38WN95C-W Monitor 38" with my M1 Pro, which sounds like you had also been using. I cannot seem to get fonts to look clear. I've tried BetterDisplay and other apps to correct the issues I'm having, but text still really fuzzy and I've been unable to resolve. Are you doing anything special when using the 38" LG with your Mac?

I’m having the same problem. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this monitor from Mac users, but I the image is too “blurry “ for my liking. Too bad, really like the size and aspect ratio. It’s probably because of the unusual sub-pixel arrangement.

Not supporting HDR is ruining this for me. Second place is not being able to change between stand and vesa mount. A lot of people complain about 60 Hz but I don't play games so not a big deal for me.

I am not aware of any alternative 27” 5k monitors other than the LG which is almost as expensive and not as nice. 4k is an awkward resolution on a 27” if you are using MacOS.

great review, the display is nice but honestly, for a screen in 2022 there should be more. 27” it’s too small, normal IPS it’ too old tech. bleeding should be a NOGO in 2022… i really hoped at least for a 30” display for the price of 1600$. The built in camera & spatial audio sound system is not the reason why i would buy this. sure, apple discontinued the 27 imac so they needed a replacment, thats the reason why you get a cam & a soundsystem in this screen. Apple makes more $ with this strategy, buying the mac studio + mac display. i was really excited about the display but thats too expensive and a too small screen with too old tech. if i need 3 monitors for my macbook, why should i buy 3 screens & all with built in cam & speakers.. that makes no sense…. i just wantedt a bigger screen for my macbook from apple for a fair price. discontinuing the imac 27 was not a great idea..

27" is totally fine, not too small. And according to you, Apple shouldn't have released the Mac Studio and Studio Display since it overlaps with the 27 inch iMac instead replacing it with an Apple Silicon 27 inch iMac, and then people would crying for an Apple branded display and the mythical standard desktop that sits between the Mac mini and Mac Pro. Is that what you want, right?

A lot of valid criticisms here, but whether internet commentators approach this from an Mac-centric point-of-view or a Windows-centric one, there are a few key items that a clearly missing from these reviews: (1: There's talk of how there are many other aftermarket alternatives out there, but there isn't really detailed coverage on 5K (or 4K) high-quality Photoshop-level monitors with VESA-mounting options and the ability to pivot 90º for use in "portrait mode" (great for DTP work). (2: if you want Apple's VESA-mounting option, you have to choose it when you order; you can't VESA-mount a monitor that's ordered with a standard mounted. Not mentioning this is a major omission. (3: There's also no mention (maybe there should be) of how using a non-Apple monitor with aftermarket accessories (add-on webcam, desktop speakers, headphones) can actually be a better setup. I've been thinking about LG's 32UN880-B 32" UltraFine Display Ergo, which isn't 5K but still has the ability to pivot. I could then add a webcam and speakers, and probably have a comparable setup for several hundred dollars less (and probably throw in a good desk arm for VESA mounting).

The question is…. What comes quality and spec wise even close to it at a lower price? I don’t think there is anything out there.

Yes Studio display is too expensive. I ordered the base Mac Studio today. Can you please do a video of cheaper monitor options (with built-in speakers and webcam) 27" to 32" for Mac Studio? Thanks. There would be many people in my boat who don't want to splurge on this - not worth it Apple monitor.

I think you missed out on the iPad Pros and the new iPad Air compatibility which makes this display nearly worth the price as no other display/monitor can interact with iOS the way the Apple Studio can. But if used with a Mac OS device only I think you right it does not warrant the money compared to what you can get with the competition. £1500 is steep especially with consumers and business trying to save every penny they can with commodities becoming less and less affordable.

I wish you would compare this new display to the 27” 2020 iMac which I think is a way better display including a computer and you can snatch it as refurbished at apple for a steal price!

I was ready to order one, but your remark towards the end of the video about Apple possibly releasing an even better version in June made me hold my horses. Generally: yes, Apple stuff is expensive. But I always set off the costs against the years I'll be using it (at least 3, and mostly longer). Finally I'd like to remark that the stand issue is a total rip off. When the time comes, I'll order the display with the VESA option.

Yes, a new Pro Display with 32 inch, 7k resolution, mini LED and ProMotion is coming this WWDC but it may as expensive as the Pro Display XDR it's replacing. Will you be able to afford three of them.
