Apple Wanted £600+ to Fix this 2018 MacBook Pro - Can I FIX it?

Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 15" i7 2.6GHz 16GB. Model Number A1990 EMC3215 and board 820-01041.
It has no signs of water damage but yet it has no power at all. Apple wanted £607 to fix it. It has already had the keyboard and top case replaced in June 2021. Will it be an easy fix or will it never work again...Let's find out.

Vince use gas for lighters to find short - you froze board with liquid gas, then you can spot short in seconds. Check out my comment.

you should never get down on yourself for not being able to fix these...even Apple doesn't fix them, they just replace the board. They are so complicated they are disposable... You tried and you learned a lot and that in itself is a win in my book. New knowledge will always be a win.

Man, from 45:10 trough to the end of the video is where i can truly see the amount of dedication you put into every repair you upload, i would've give up after the first voltage injection. Truly amazing work!

Vince always check the 19 v power rail ,check the mosfets at the beginning where you put in the power. If all okay then check the 5v power rail, if okay then check if the bios chip has 3v. I highly recommend a heat camera. Good luck

A technique I've used to see what is warming up is to give the board a good dosing of freezer spray so that it gets frosted up. You can then easily see what is warming up when you apply power and see what defrosts soonest. The other tool I've used is the Polar Toneohm. This is a milliohmeter and is very good at tracing shorts. As the name suggests, it puts out a variable frequency tone, so you can quickly probe lots of points and trace the highest pitch point which would be the lowest resistance.

@My Mate VINCE The reason nothing is heating up on the board is that it's a very low resistance short. The better the short (lower resistance) the less it will heat up. Dissipated power = I² * R, so the closer resistance (R) goes to 0 the less power is dissipated, even if current (I) is high. (A 0 ohm superconductor would not heat up at all, at any current). You'd need a thermal camera to see something that's heating up only a little and sometimes the short is so low resistance it won't heat up at all... The reason your crocodile clip heats up is because it's making a poor connection. The slightest bit of poor connection will result in a higher resistance in the clip connection then the short itself. For such tests it's best to solder all connections to ensure proper connections.

From reading some comments and doing some research of my own, I think it is possible that with the failure of the power management chip, the SSD may have also died. I wonder if it is possible to find replacement ssd chips and replace those? Great attempt Vince, I really appreciate the attempt!!

I really enjoyed watching this. I used to fix computers but never tried component level repair. I think my brain is too old and damaged now to begin but I do enjoy watching others. And its not just fixing a device, I enjoy the watching the method you or others use to isolate a fault.

Great video! Always enjoy watching your videos! I’m not an expert at all, but I was wondering.. If the SSD is the fault, would desoldering the SSD not give you a picture on the screen? It would prove the fault and you might be able to run macOS from an external harddrive.

Vince I can almost feel the hours you put into this Mac! Regarding the flir cam, you can buy an used Cat S60 or S61 for cheap and they come with flir cameras. I use the S61 myself and works perfectly

Hi Vince, its the power management chip, the american dude has made a full video about it, because he couldn't source it from anywhere. Its custom made from Renissance chip manufacturer.

Vince to find a short without thermal camera there is a better way - just use gas for lighters. You grab plastic end and spray the whole board with liquid gas. It will froze everything so you can spot short in seconds. From my experience this liquid gas for lighters in not conductive, just leave some residue, easy to clean with IPA. Funny story how I came up with that idea - when I rent a flat, landlord close gas stove thermostat controller behind steel box with lock. About 16°C inside room :( But there was a vent hole in that box, so I was injecting ligher gas inside it to cheat thermal sensor on PCB. Gas stove kick in immediately after injection, heating like there is no tommorow :)

@@unitedfools3493 you could, but it's inefficient. IPA is transparent, hard to spot. Lighter gas leave white frost on components, so you could cover whole board with it, then watch for unfreeze spot

Accidental touching of ground with the positive lead, with lighter gas, can lead to more to fix, if not become impossible to do so.

It might be expensive, but you should get a infrared camera like a flir or something. They can connect to your phone and you might see abnormalities inside the board or slight variations in temp that you wouldn’t normally detect. 🤔🤔

Look for cracks in the tantalum capacitors, a hard short is often due to a blown tantalum.

U9500 is shorted sending 3.3V to l9520 , L9521, I would replace U9500 and reball U7800, U9500 has internal mosfets , Reballing that chip would not be an easy job, great video, The only worry is if the ssd survived 👍👍👍

Thanks AR, I knew you would have the answers. So...I looked on eBay at a similar 820-01041 board and noticed that it didn't have the U9500 or the SSD that it fed. So I thought on my one it might work without the U9500 and use the other SSD's. I removed the U9500 and 5V jumped to 20V after a few seconds and then started to climb on the Amps until it was around 1.5V at 20v. Nothing came on the screen, and then the U7800 got hot and it went back to 0.02A 😥. Now it is behaving the same as before but strangely some USB-C ports give 5V and some 20V!!!!! I will wait until a new U7800 arrives and try again. Do you think it could work without that U9500 and the SSD it feeds? Cheers for the help as always 👍👍😎

Might be time to invest in a thermal camera vince . I know I said this about 2 or 3 years ago but it could help you a lot when it comes to finding hot spots on the board you're working on. Only half way through the video hoping for a great outcome :)

I think your almost there. SSD's do fail at random. I've bought ssd drives from amazon, set it all up in computer and the computer had an issue, constant reboot. SSD not listed. I enjoyed that video.

What the electronics world needs is a dedicated electronics version of a bridge megger which measures a short in normal sized wiring and you can "zoom" in on the short by interpreting the reading on your megger, the stronger the reading the closer you are until you get almost a full meter indicating your insulation side of the circuit is bang on the short pretty much but means you can with some confidence cut in a new section of wire. I know the telephone engineers used 'em as did the army and navy etc the navy ones could be 500v output because of the long distances between junctions. My one is I believe an ex GPO Everard unit of 120v which came with a 100ft of line for the insulation circuit and a 10ft line so guessing this was likely for homes or flats sort of application thinking on the average manhole to house distance back then in the days before green cabinets.

Hey Vince, it looks like you could use a thermal camera. I have one that is broken and I've been quoted £220 + £30 shipping for repair. I'm not prepared to spend that on it, so I was wondering if you would like it, for a video, and if you can repair it, it might help you on your next macbook/laptop repair. I've had a look and I can't find your P.O. box reference anywhere. I would send it if I could find the details. The camera is a Flir C2, i have opened it up and had a look, and found that the power control IC has a short, or it gets very hot when the battery is connected. I removed a couple of smd capacitors to see if that removed the short to no avail, but I'll pop them back on if you want it. As far as I can tell, the screen and cameras are ok, but obviously I've never got it to power up. Let me know, cheers. Dave.

Maybe Macbuster a more fun term but I'd never attempt fixing them, way beyond me. Watched loads if not all of your videos, all educational and entertaining. I've bought a few laptops from Fleabay going by description and all were bogus, suddenly it stopped working or untested, I checked them and it was always GPU failures.

You really need a FLIR for instances like this. I brought the cheap thermometer version to check for sludged up radiators at a friends house but it is surprisingly good for electronics. Well I say that but as most of my projects are valve based everything is nice and toasty. For solid state boards I can spot an errant component easily enough.

what are the chances im trying to fix a 2008 imac myself with a black screen , i swapped the battery and that got rid of the beep code , it was 3 short 3 long 3 short. now i only have black screen, 3 of 4 leds are light up , currently stumped as to what to do next besides order new ribbon cables

Just a thought that cable you was trying on the MacBook I believe it dose not carry data only power as you can’t run an Egpu from it maybe worth trying a data usb cable like the ones needed for 5k lg screen apple sells

You can try using the compass, a short circuit or breaking a line could be throwing off a magnetic field that you could locate with that, that is mostly used in the automotive field though.

For the car radio from airport fester to remove it. I don’t need a pen check up screwdriver. It has to be a long Phillips screwdriver because there’s two screws were holding Mysterio what are quite low down the hidden so you need a very long Phillips screwdriver to do with very very low down the screws screws, you can’t see them on telly versus Crewe at the bottom so you need a long long do you need quite a long Phillips head screwdriver?

Multimeter, 1.5 V and 9 Amp power are sufficient to locate short on a circuit. A small size needle compass will tell us roughly the direction of current flow.

I've never owned a MacBook, as I'm not an Apple fanboy. But a lot of the time, if owners abuse their devices, then they will not last very long. And £350 for a non working laptop is ridiculous. However, I own a Dell inspiron 1545, and I bought it new around 2007-2008. It came pre installed with Windows XP Home, 128Gb of storage, and 4Gb of memory, and it still works perfectly. I had increased the memory to 8Gb, installed an SSD where the DVD RW drive used to live, and had upgraded to Windows 7, and later, Windows 10, which it is still running. It is still running with the Intel Celeron DUAL core CPU, and the original HDD, which is now used only for storing files. Windows is run off of the SSD for faster boot speeds etc. The display, although not as bright as modern displays, still works with no issue with 720p resolution. And I also have the original battery, which still holds a charge after 15 years of use, although it only gives about 30-35 minutes runtime. But apart from a couple of new keyboards over the years, the extra memory, and SSD, everything else is original, and it still looks like a tidy machine, that still works. I was so impressed with the length of time it lasted, that I bought a brand new Dell inspiron 7570 in 2020. And I use both computers regularly. I would definitely recommend Dell, based on my own experience.

Heh, this just shows how personal experience has no value. I've kept the same iMac since 2011, taking it from 4 to 16 GB of RAM, and from a mechanical HD to a 2TB SSD - I had even upgraded the graphics board for a while just to play a particular game, and all this on a compact "all-in-one" machine. The MB I'm writing from now is of the same vintage and has been similarly upgraded; I might have had to get a new battery, but it could have been on the previous macbook, I'm not sure about this. It's not been abused but it actually fell a few times with no consequences. In the meantime I've tossed a couple PC notebooks (HP, they're trash) and 4 PCs - one very good HP (a lightning burnt some chips) and three Dells (all stopped working with no apparent reason, I revived the last one but it's crawling at snail speed and well, that's all the PC I need). I've come to the conclusion that Dells are useless wrecks. Definitely a different experience from yours. I know a number of people who occasionally have problems with their computer (being the local hobbyist fixer), and I don't see one brand/kind being more prone to faults than another. Mac owners get furious at their computers just like PC owners. If anything, PC people are more likely to just buy another relatively cheap computer and start from fresh; Mac people usually spent a lot on their stuff and want to keep it until it rots. But it's probably only true for the ones I know, as the internet seems to tell tales of "apple fanboys" running to the Store every time a new model is out, and "PC wizards" running last year's games on 20 year old machines :D

@@IlBiggo Well I guess it all depends how you treat your devices, as to how durable they are. I agree about HP laptops though, as I had the unfortunate opportunity to own one once. They are absolute trash. But Macbooks are just way too over priced for what they are, and what they can do. And I hate being tied in to the Apple eco system, which can stifle productivity and creativity.

wOw,, Very Gallant try Captain @! These are all I use, and now on my 4th MBP - being they are the only ones with Firewire option for external drives. My older MBP by mistake missed connection to USP battery back up,, and was unfortunately hit by lightning, waking to explosion from transformer on the pole in neighbors backyard,, and in pouring rain left both our yards on fire from the coolant oil from inside. Apple had a heck of a time getting him repaired, and had to go back again for a component they forgot to replace. Noticed you mention it's not a water damaged event,, but maybe it's a severe line voltage spike that took it out, causing the mystery. Strangely enough - this new MBP not even a week old went under water, when Son's mother borrowed it to take a bath,, and two seconds later walking in,, splash,, down it went while playing a movie. I totally got it to recover by the next day,, and still using it at this moment. One thing not done - sinking deep into Rice,, what a mental case scene that is for any electronic device. Basically set it next to the Titanic,, and let the corrosion process begin with live power not able to disconnect. I can explain fool proof method another time - or read about it on Fixit. Cheers

Get yourself a heat sensing camera to find hot components. There are inexpensive China made ones such as the UNI-T UTI260B available from Ali express. By the way are you based in Watford?

If it’s water damaged alcohol and a toothbrush are your friend. Soak the motherboard (only) in white spirits for 10 minutes then take it out and brush all chip contacts and anything metal with a toothbrush. Then sit to dry for a couple of hours before reconnecting. Not all water damage is visible. I used to buy broken MacBooks from eBay all the time and managed to fix every single one of them. This technique worked on 99% of them without removing any chips

You can't win em all, but a valiant attempt never the less ;) Sounds like something went wrong with the reg for the SSD and the SSD is toast =/ I dont like the way they integrate SSDs this way, and similarly on the latest consoles (doesnt the PS5 have an SSD soldered on too?).

I believe the PS5 does Chris! It is a shame considering the time sunk into it but at least I learnt about the mV way of finding a short. Hopefully that will come in handy in the future. As always a big thumbs up for watching/commenting and the support 👍

Mate, quick question. I have an old 2010 iMac 21inch and the graphics card has died. I’ve seen a lot of videos on KZfaq about baking it in the oven. Sounds mad to me but what do you think? Would really appreciate your input. Cheers

It works with Dell motherboards that have a graphics chip fault.

Did you not identify the chip that was giving 3.3 out when it should not but had correct IP? Surely leaving that on would fail your external voltage test ?

Brush or spray your alcohol to locate hot spot by the evaporation rate. If we have have a multimeter try trace the min/max voltages distribution on mother board to sort out a hot spot. Incest a fraction of that £600 on a 2D IR scanner otherwise on a 1D IR scanner.

I've watched hours of your videos and enjoy each one but I must say you need a a thermal camera, I understand it would take a lot of the fun out of what you're doing but I think it would be worth it.

Adamant IT had a Mac in his shop on KZfaq, it was one of those capacitors that failed, the inside middle of the six.

Vince, these computers regularly have shorted capacitors around the NAND and the regulator can short because of this. Check this area to see if this is the case.
