Just did this in my back yard next to my shed here in Dallas. Low spot there ALWAYS has pooled water for days after a rain. Dug 3 of these about 36 inches deep and got a super heavy rain the same night. Next afternoon the area had no pooled water and ground isn't spongy. All for less than $30! THANK YOU CHUCK!!

@@soundrew we're near Harrisburg, same thing. I don't know how well this would work for us here as the ground for many feet is clay and shale. There is no "under" to go to.

I tried this in my yard. Solid clay. Used a powered post hole digger. Had to go 3 feet down to get thru. 5 of 6 holes work great. One fills with water and takes days to drain. But overall very happy. THANK YOU

Hint ( more like a "question")---> after you dig your hole.....instead of pushing the cloth cover down and having a hard time getting the gravel in it.... simply lay the cloth over the hole flat....and pour the gravel over the hole. I would guess the "weight" of the gravel would ( all by itself) push the cloth down with it. Should be easier.

I saw a video from India in which a guy bored a hole three or four feet deep and about a foot in diameter and filled it with organic material. I think he placed them three or four feet apart. This was to aid aquifer recharge. I think it was called hydro pore.

Great video! This is where knowing your soil is king. When you own land, getting a borehole to know the layers is worth its weight in gold. Just get thru the bad clay and then you're good to go. Love it.

I tried this from your previous video where we have poor grading and ponding in front of a garage side entry door. It worked great! I put a 10" hole and 4 feet deep. My price ended up being over 200% more than yours, but that's fine because it's still a tiny fraction of a french drain cost. We are in Indiana, and apparently the hard pan/fragipan can be quite deep here.

My next DIY for sure. I have a pop-up drain at the end of a French drain going out to the curb, and it works great until someone hops the curb and bashes the drain in. I have to replace that thing every single year. It’s time for something different.

Definitely could have used this technique at the end of my downhill driveway over the winter, as a French drain would have drained onto the neighbor's property.

@appledrains A slight alternative that I’ve found keeps the cloth from being dragged into the hole by the gravel if you have to dig deeper to get below the hard pan is to use a piece of Drain-Sleeve. Tie a knot in one end, cut it a couple of feet longer than hole depth and split it above ground to have a flat portion that I can hold down around the hole, then pour in the gravel. The rest of the process is about the same. Love your videos! You’ve saved me a LOT of money over the past couple of years.

You mention in the video that you need to dig down about 2 feet. I think the depth is variable. Here in California at least the hard pan can be anywhere from a few inches to 2 to 3 feet. The hard pan itself can vary from a few inches to several feet. So, I think it's important to keep that in mind as trying to dig down through several feet of hard pan after already digging out 2 feet or so of soil would hardly be doable for most.

When we put a parking area in a small property … A space of 3 feet between our neighbors and the pavement the water would run down into the street so when I was putting in a fence, I drilled three holes and installed perforated sewer pipe with pea stone this drained the water immediately the advantage of this is that you’re also getting this water back into the aquifer-instead of running out into our storm treatment systems. We also used to make dry wells by digging a 4X4 hole near the roadway and installing about 4 feet of cinderblocks that were not mortise together and drained this wet spot on our back roads Peace Nice video

This is a great solution but only if the problem is surface water not draining through hardpan. Sometimes the problems is ground water itself.

Act on this quick because the water will begin to wash away the soil beneath your driveway. Then you will have issues with driveway cracks. That’s what happened to me. Best of luck.

I've done this before myself. Not the best solution but effective. I had standing water often for several days after a hard rain. Later after digging five of these in a twenty foot area it went from several days to just one.

May work in some areas. On our side of the street county had to go down 17-20' to break through the hard pan or the sand chimneys, on the other side, down 24'. Other parts of the county, even just few miles away, it's a few feet to no hard pan. I'm over in FL.

Hey Chuck - I love your channel and have already done a bunch of these projects successfully! QUESTION: About the "hard pan" I have not heard that term around here - West of Boston, my soil is very rocky or sandy for the most part. Only the top 5-6" or so gets dense (probably compacted from the weight of heavy rains and snow over time). So, how do I know how deep is deep enough if I don't have the soil you describe in your videos?

My daughter and son-in-law just bought a house last month. There is a retaining wall they goes up a hill about 20’ The lawn below is about 7’ from the patio and 20’ wide. The soil has a lot of clay. I’m literally 0.5 miles from them. Lots of clay in the soil in this area

I’m always so amused at people living in areas where you can just dig in the ground. There are so many large rocks here that this two hole project would take half a day, a pickaxe, and some serious leverage. “Just dig a hole” isn’t so easy everywhere…

I’m amused at your comment. Yes, most people can just dig in the ground, especially a drain channel based in Florida sand. Maybe you should search for a channel that is based in a large rock area for your special little problem.

Exactly. Our farm is all bake potato sized rocks about 8” down. Just putting in fence posts for barbed is always such hard work.

I have made vertical drains for a few years in my yard. Neighbor sprinkler is sending a lot of water to my back yard so in areas it collected I dug a deep hole and put rock and covered it back. No problem.

@@Eli-qr9hc none, hole and rock that is all. I even watched a channel in England they drilled 100 holes in a yard (big yard) and that is what they did as well. All you are doing is giving water a void to go into and drain into the ground. I dont see needing fabric. My yard has a lot of clay too so there isnt going to be any movement of material.

Deep root trees are great for breaking hard pan, most hardwoods are shallow root. Gums are an exception.

This may be a dumb question, but I'm just curious of why you use the piece of fabric rather than just putting the gravel into the hole? Is it to keep the gravel from eventually getting "clogged" up with soil? (I'm assuming) also thank you for this video, have a small area in my yard that has draining issues if there is a large rain, which then kills my grass there and I'm going to give this a try.

Hi chuck thank you for the great tips. I'm currently in UK and my garden is clay soil type I have flooding in the whole garden and after adding a French drain or more clearing and remaking one. Still have standing water on the lawn. What I want or need to know is will vertical drain work on a clay soil. I'd be happy to try this on the worst area and see how it goes.

My dad bought a house 40 years ago where I grew up and was only able to discover a catastrophic flooding issue in the backyard that declines toward the back of the house and ends up coming in through many various cracks in the cement of a sub floor of an indoor kind of shed/patio. He runs all kinds of sump pumps - maybe 5 in total, running one of them in a giant hole he dug up against that subfloor area of the home and stays up all night nervously watching the radar. Retired now, he would OFTEN stay home from work in the past, when the weather called for heavy rainfall. It’s ridiculous. I think he could have sued someone at some point for not disclosing such a serious issue before they closed on the house. I doubt he can sell his house at this point. HE, himself, might get sued or leave behind an uninhabitable house that is totally worthless. I’m hoping to help him solve this problem with this method, though I understand that perhaps the vertical drains can’t address severe flooding. Here’s to hoping… thank you so much for sharing this solution.

Sand will work but the larger pore space area helps make a catch basin to lower the water table for the area to better help catch a rain.

Hey Chuck! Thanks for making your videos I know its a pain in the butt with cameras and all. I have a soft topsoil but hard pan is 3-4 foot deep here in Missouri. I know because of digging piers for shop and lean to. Getting to the pan is pretty easy with machine but getting under hard pan will take a lot of bar work, that I don't want at 50 years old. Do you think I can crack some of those slab rocks for this to work? Or is just getting to them enough?

I was wondering the same thing. We dug a 2 to 3 foot hole for our above ground pool. Now water just accumulates around the pool like a moat. Was wandering if this would work even though I'm already 2 to 3 ft underground. Since it's so cheap I'll probably try it anyway before paying someone to fix it.

New house questions. I have some 6” drain pipe left over from the house being built. Could I use that for the vertical shaft and cap it with cloth? Similarly: the builder buried 6” drain pipe under the yard to send the water from my gutters away from the house but they left about 5’ of each pipe unburied at the outskirts of the yard. Would it make sense to run that tail end of pipe vertically?

If you are talking perforated pipe the holes may allow sandy soil into the cavity and eventually muck it up and reduce the drainage capacity. You could surround the pipe with drainage stone (gravel) to mitigate that. If you have tight soil/clay, the holes may not clog up. My theory here is based on the way that drainage pipe you see at Home Depot is wrapped in a foam like material which i imagine is to 1) slow the flow of water into and 2) keep sand and loose soil out.

So, what you are creating is a baby-sized dry well, right? Where I live in Alberta, Canada, we have very heavy clay soils that start about 3-6" and just seem to go on for ever. Any suggestions?

This does keep the water on-site. If it sits on the surface then it just evaporates. And French drains remove it. This waters your property and eventually finds its way to the aquifer.

Fill the hole with water and let it soak in (may take awhile). Then you’ll be able to pull that hardpan out easily. Using this method you can get down 36” without too much effort.

Make sure that the rock you use is not a limestone type of stone because it will clog your filter cloth

I think it does matter what fabric. I recommend a natural fiber, like burlap, to not contaminate...

Not all parts of Florida are sandy. I live in an area with a hard clay pan 60"-84" deep which causes rainwater to form large ponds in the yard, which up until now I have had to employ a trash pump to displace elsewhere. I am thinking on using a pvc pipe, similar to a well casing, in lieu of the filter cloth, and filling it with rock.
