The following may be helpful to anyone planning a migrations (aka replication). I learnt this in a call to Apple support, when my first Mac-MacMini migration stalled a few hours ago. There are three ways to connect the two devices: a) via wi-fi (as in this video and the regular instructions). Simple, but relies on your router being stable for hours on end. And may only be good for 50-60 Mb/sec so 500GB takes hours!; b) connect the two Macs by wire. Super fast and stable - but you’ll need a cable that works with both devices, so can be complicated e.g. Thunderbolt 2 - USBC. Maybe that’s why Apple don’t normally mention it; or c) migrate from the old device’s TimeMachine backup disc. Again, you’ll need the right cable. I haven’t tried this (yet). I’m currently doing (a) again, with a USBA-USBC cable as backup (but that’s even slower than wi-fi). Migration Assistant seems to allow wi-fi AND cable in the same migration. I guess that, if you want cable, you have to turn wi-fi off?

IF THESE TWO MACS ARE ON DIFFERENT VERSIONS, IT WILL NOT ALLOW TO TRANSFER. SPEAK FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE. MY MACBOOK PRO IS ON macOS 10.15 (Catalina) AND MY IMAC IS ON macOS 12 (Monterey). NO WAY TO MIGRATE.

Used the Apple Migration Tool and unfortunately the process stalled and wouldn't complete, I was transferring data between a 2017 MacBook Air to a new MacBook M2, good news is I called Apple, the call back was literally less than a minute, and they worked me through it over the phone, never did move all my data over but actually got the specific information I wanted moved, so even if the tool doesn't work Apple Support is a great resource,

Hey there! Thanks for letting us know you are having trouble getting your Time Machine backup restored to your Mac. In order to do this, you will need to be able to access macOS. If you cannot do that currently, the first step will be to reinstall macOS, which you can do following s.apple.com/dE0w4r5x8K. Once macOS has been reinstalled, you can then restore your Time Machine backup with the instructions in the above video, or using s.apple.com/dE4w6n8g1O. If you need more help after that, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us here: apple.co/GetSupport

Is this method the same as using a Time Machine backup? I have an old macbook, with an old MacOs version (I can't upgrade it) and I have a Time Machine backup of it. Would it be better for me to use that backup to transfer everything on a new mac or it would be better to use the Migration Assistant to do it? Would I end up with an old macos version if I had to use the TM backup on a new mac?

Why do you recommend a wifi connection if the direct cable connection is faster? Thank you

Most likely because most people don’t have a conversion piece to connect the macs as they are C-ports now. It makes sense they would recommend WiFi as it’s the most common use for most people.

We need features like 1. App lock to lock any application 2. PiP for WhatsApp and facebook video calls 3. call recording is a MUST HAVE in the times of fraud
@scottishwildcat
@scottishwildcat 2 жыл бұрын
Lock an application how, and for what purpose? You have user accounts, parental controls, and the ability to turn off auto-updates for that sort of thing. PiP in third-party apps is up to those apps, Apple provides APIs for PiP they can use if they wish. Call recording is illegal in many US states and many other countries without consent, so they're probably never going to make that a core feature.

We can help. You’ll want to make sure that both computers have Wi-Fi turned on and are near each other. If either of them is using OS X El Capitan or earlier, make sure that they're on the same Wi-Fi network. If you have a compatible Mac, such as the Mac Studio, and your Wi-Fi is slow, you can also connect your old computer to your new Mac Studio with an Ethernet or Thunderbolt cable to quickly transfer your data. This resource has more details for reference: s.apple.com/DH3W5o0Eb9 If you have further questions follow this link to get more assistance: apple.co/GetSupport

@@applesupport Update...Make sure the computer you are "migrating to" has either the same or a higher Version of the OS than the computer you are "migrating from". This was not the case with my new Mac Studio when I tried to migrate from my older Mac mini, which was always up-to-date. Once I updated my new Mac Studio to the latest Version of macOS the migration process via both units being hardwired to the same router worked perfectly.

In this case you're saying that you can migrate your data to a newer mac? How do you fix this: "This Mac Can’t Be Used to Migrate Data"

But what if you only want to copy a part from your old mac - some applications, plugins etc ?
@applesupport

Thanks for reaching out! We'll be happy to help. With data migrations, you might choose to move certain data over, but it would be all or nothing in the transfer. You would then be able to delete what you no longer want to keep. You might check with other methods, if you're looking to only move some items over and not everything. If we can be of further assistance, please reach out directly from apple.co/GetSupport

Ok.. I have an issue here. My old iMac (late 2013) failed an update and suffered a critical failure. I was able to try a second time through Apple support, so I was able to verify that the internal drive was fine, it was just an operating system failure. So now I have the old 1T drive out of the old mac, and have bought a cable so I will be able to access the data and hopefully migrate this to my new 2023 iMac. Will the migration assistant help me do this?

What if your old computer has a lot more storage than your new computer? Can you use external drives on your new computer and still use migration Assistant
@applesupport
@applesupport Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. We can help. You can always use external hard drives to supplement your overall storage. If you are using multiple external drives, it may be helpful to designate a particular type of file type for each drive, such as one for photos and video media. It would be best to keep all system and app data on the internal storage, so it is always available. If you still have questions, you can reach out here: apple.co/GetSupport

The Mac I wanted to transfer to had Sonoma installed. The system gave me a warning. "The Mac you want to transfer to is using a newer MacOS version and did not allow it. The Mac I wanted to transfer to forced me to install Ventura. Then I had to log in again, did all the installations again. And lastly, I reinstalled Sonoma. Why did the system forcing me to just install Ventura? If I could, I could install Sonoma instead of Ventura and have no problems. Thanks Apple. You've exhausted me! I hope you take this comment into consideration.

If you migrate your data to a different Mac using Setup Assistant, your keychains(encrypted container used to store account names and passwords for apps) are automatically transferred to the new Mac. You can also use iCloud Keychain to securely store your login information. iCloud Keychain automatically keeps that information up to date across all your Mac computers and iOS devices. We’re happy to assist. Migration Assistant is intended to move the majority of your content from one computer to another. If you want to transfer select files, you’d need to look into other options, like AirDrop, File Sharing or possibly email, depending on what you’re trying to transfer. For more on AirDrop, see this link: s.apple.com/dE4h5o6x6L This link covers File Sharing: s.apple.com/dE4R8p8o2K For any follow-up questions, use this link to reach us directly: apple.co/GetSupport

Is there a way to migrate _only_ the content in the Notes app? I would like to transfer everything else - music, applications, documents, etc. - manually using a thumb drive (I don't have much stuff, so it won't take long). The only thing I'm concerned about are my Notes. I want to make sure those can be transferred over with the Migration Assistance tool.
