In this journey into the belly of the beast, Samurai Appliance Repair Man ( Appliantology.org) goes undercover as The Appliance Guru ( ApplianceGuru.com) to find and fix the cause of slow fill.
Slow or no cold water fill is a common problem that can affect any washer, top loader or front loader, for a variety of reasons. It's especially common for houses on a well or with older plumbing.
On washers with this problem that do the rinse cycle with cold water only, the washer will often stall because it's waiting for the water to fill to a certain level but never does (or takes a really long time to do so).

I did what another commentator did. Unhook both hoses at the machine and cleaned out the crap on the screens with spray bottle (with vinegar) and a pointed q-tip. Cold side was PACKED with gunk, hot side not so bad (cleaned it anyway). Also, before hooking lines back up, turn water on (into a bucket) lots of sediment came out of the cold line (then ran clean). Good as new! Took about 15 minutes and no tearing the machine apart. Will probably have to replace part someday, but I needed to do laundry TODAY!

Good video, however, I have to politely beg to differ on the hoses. An insurance company did a study and found that both the rubber and stainless steel hoses have issues. They tend to last about the same amount of time. Burst hoses are a leading cause for home owner's insurance claims. It is in the interest of the insurance company to have the home owner change hoses more often than needed. No flood, no pay out, the cost is pushed onto the homeowner. There is no incentive to save the home owner money. The people who sell the hoses love it too. The study found that hoses almost always fail at the connections. If you check the connections about twice a year and ensure that they don't look corroded, then odds are the hose is still good. One of the reasons the connections fail is that the rubber washer that goes between the screw on end of the hose and the shut off valve connection dries up and begins to fail. When that washer fails, water begins to leak onto the crimp part of the hose connection. The crimp starts to rust away and eventually the hose bulges and bursts at the crimp and hose connection. If you replace the 10 cent washers regularly on the hose connections and regularly do a visual inspection of the hoses, they will last many years. The washers are the same ones you use for the end of a garden hose. I currently have rubber hoses that have been installed for 15 years.... they still look great. Save yourself some money and replace the 10 cent washers.

Actually the study found the houses typically fail on the hose part and that rubber hoses are about three times more likely to fail faster

I wholeheartedly agree with Samurai! I'm on a well, too and had to replace the well pump last month. I tried an A. O. Smith pre water filter and a 5 micron filter cartridge. It clogged up with sediment within 2 days. I then tried a 2-pak of 20 micron cartridges ($9.88 at Lowe's). I sprayed the washing machine screens and sucked out a ton of sediment & rust. I put the hoses back on and it's incredible how much of a difference the filter and the screen cleaning has made!

Thank you. I was able to get away with just cleaning the screens. I did use a spray bottle with a good straight stream to get a lot of the rust out of the permanent screen. Now everything is good !

So I bought a Kenmore Front load washer a few months ago from Sears. I had been behind on laundry because the old washer was dying. I’ve been in a heavy duty declutter and Spring cleaning streak. Just preoccupied and behind. I was thrilled to get a new washer. I haven’t been staying to watch the cycle and don’t get clothes out for a few hours. I ran a hot water cycle yesterday. Transferred load. Noticed the clothes were warm and steamy. I thought I would automatically have a cold water rinse. Anyway, I threw in my purple comforter and selected cold wash. I ran back upstairs to gather trash for garbage day. Eventually came back down and was surprised to see a fogged up glass. I opened the washer. My comforter was clean but still very warm. I took it out, put it in the dryer. Threw in a couple of my dogs blankets, selected cold cycle. I let the washer start and get into the cycle. Then I pushed “add items” and when I reached in, my glasses fogged up. I then felt the blankets. They were very hot. I am sure it was a mistake, but it appears my technician somehow mixed up the hoses. I had been baffled why my gas bill had been going way up even though I use an energy efficient washer with much shorter cycles. My hot water heater is a gas unit. I didn’t imagine my clothes fading and understand now why my gas bill has been steadily going up when it’s historically been my lowest bill period. I guess I need to go through my paperwork and call them. Bad enough the cost of the hoses isn’t included in the price for the unit. They cost an additional $35 or $40. $75 for delivery and an additional cost to have a technician do the installation. He made a human mistake, however now I have to call them and argue about it. I’m just venting. Don’t be rude when you @me.

One other problem you may want to check. My hot and or cold water ran slow. Paid about $50 for a new water valve...installed it, and water still ran slow. Problem....the water hose from the outlet to the inlet valve was one of those metal wrapped hoses. I took it off and noticed it has plastic screens in both ends of the hose. On a hunch and a prayer i drilled out the two screen in each end of the hose...works fine now. The slightest little trash will slow down the water flow in the hose. If you don't want to go to the trouble of drilling out the little screens...go to your local hardware store and buy the cheap rubber hose for about $10 with no screen in either end. Cheaper than a $50 fill valve. You dont need screens in the hose anyway...the fill valve has them in the inlets. Check your hose first!!!! Danny the dope. DOH!

Clean both of the screens in each inlet inside the washer hose inlet. There are two screens for each cold and hot on the washer.. One is inside the machine inlet that you can't see, and one outside the machine that you can barely see, it has a tab you pull out. Use a flashlight and look inside the inlet tube or nipple that's threaded, after you take the first screen off you'll see it.. My inside screen was clogged bad. Both hoses were good I saved, didn't need new hoses... All fixed.

Loved the video. I just had this problem, and went online to diagnose it. The first site I went to suggested cleaning the screen. I did this and it now flows great. I guess I will find out next wash whether it overflows. I don't think there was any gunk behind the screen. At least not any that couldn't go though the screen anyway. I mean any particulates small enough to go through the mesh shouldn't jam the valve. We will see. I will watch it closely next fill up. It was a hand me down washer. So if I have to replace a few parts, no biggie. Now if I could just get my dryer to run, LOL.

I am on well water, I have a sediment filter on my cold water line on my washing machine and about every 3 months I have to change the filter, disconnect the line from the filter to the washing machine. I then take tissue paper, and rub out the inside of the washing machine side connetor or the valve, I have been doing this for 10 years now, no problem with destroying the valve.

I'm guessing this is my problem. Had a huge water repair in my subdivision. I did not test the machine before the plumber's came to fix low water pressure in kitchen. I have hot water but trickling cold, exactly like in this video. Looks like I just need to clean out the valve. The association is supposed to send the plumber back to fix the machine but I haven't heard anything from them since reporting the issue on Monday night. I'll try this as everything was functioning properly prior to the water fiasco. I even had to buy a valve seal ($3) for one of the toilets, because the tank kept overfilling.

The problem shown on your video is what is happening to our washer. However, the filter screen valves are spotless clean. What is odd is that when the water in the washer starts to trickle, if we turn on the cold water on the laundry tub right next to it the water will run into the washer normally.

You can just clean those screens out; don’t need to replace the whole valve. Poke out gunk with a flathead screwdriver, then use a spray bottle of vinegar and baking soda (or even just water) to get the rest clean. Cost: zero. I absolutely agree about the rubber hoses; get rid of those! If you have a finished basement and your washer hose blows out you will regret not spending a few dollars and the time it takes to replace those water supply lines with reinforced nylon ones. Just buy them at the hardware store; a simple diy job. The first thing the insurance adjuster will check is whether you have rubber supply lines to your washer, and the insurer will not pay a dime for the cost of repairing and replacement of damages to your finished basement (or wherever your washing machine is).

This is a great question-- I was hoping someone would ask it! The potential problem with cleaning the screens in the valve is that some of the grit and gookus on the screen would get pushed back inside inside the valve and potentially jam up that piston. If this happens, it would cause the valve to stick open, unable to close itself even when power is removed. The result is a flood. A homeowner could do this and take their chances. However, the risk of a flood remains. As a professional appliantologist, I cannot do this because, if a flood were to occur after I worked on the machine, I would be liable (last one to touch it) and there would be a question as to whether or not my liability insurance would cover me in such a situation.

I have a similar problem that deviates slightly from your description. I have a DWM99W danby washer. The cold water does seem to flow just fine, but for some reason the washer won't fill up with cold water. It will start to fill and get to a fairly high water level, and then slowly drain of water at a certain point (maybe when I open to check the level a sensor resets it?) so it will continuously try to fill but never finish. It would run all day trying to fill if I didn't intervene. So I can't ever wash anything on a cold setting now. It will fill fine on the warm/cold setting, but it won't progress once it hits the rinse phase. Perhaps that's because it can't fill up with cold water. I have to manually move the knob to the next phase for it to progress. Do you have any diagnosis for this kind of issue?

On our top loading GE washer, the cold water is not filling at all when I turn it to cold. It won't even start. Warm and hot do though. I turned the timer to rinse, and it fills with cold water so I am not sure whats going on.

Water won’t come out, no humming either, does that mean the wire next to the cold inlet valve is disconnected or Damaged?

Hi - I have a friend who described a problem similar to this. However, she couldn't get cold water on cold, but could on Cold/Hot. That doesn't sound like what this would solve, which is effectively a plugged valve. What do you think that could be? Also, where do I find replacement parts?

Do you have a video for when no cold water comes in at all? No hum, no sound, nothing. No response. When it gets to the rinse cycle it clicks over to that cycle then clicks a 2nd time to off. Seems it could be the board

Had this problem with cold water not working about 6 months and and we replaced the the inlet valve and it worked fine after that. Now, probably only 6 months later or less it is happening again. Do you know why it would be happening again?

My washer had a hot water flow problem so I bought and installed a new water valve block. The hot was still slower than the cold. I then took apart the old water valve block. To my surprise the hole in the hot water side was only half the size of the cold water side. The hot water side had a factory built in flow resistor. What is up with that? I took a drill bit and made the hot water side the same as the cold and reinstalled the old block. I have cut the time it take to fill by half. What is the reason for the flow resistor on the hot water side?

just thoughg I'd add an FYI. This video presenter (often referred to as the OP-original poster)does not answer are questions in the comment section. I scrolled through and read many questions that viewers had and never saw any replies by the OP. Why do people do that, post an instructional video then never answer viewer's additional questions? Seems odd to me... but anyway Take care y'all.

The washing machine in my home only has one hose and I believe it's connected to the hot water. How do I fix this? It's shrinking my clothes! And I'd rather wash in cold. What tools would I need?

Thank u thank u thank u so very much! I have a question, my faulty inlet valve has a thermistor, and my new one doesnt. I installed the new one and didnt connect the wires that were in the old thermistor, it seems to work fine. Can you tell me if this is ok if i use it like that or should i buy a new valve with a thermistor?

@@waffleone3 i dont remember i just put the new inlet valve without the thermistot and taped up the wires. It works fine i only use cold water anyways. i believe it is to regulate hot water or something like that. Been working fine a couple years so far.

I have a 2 and a 1/2 year old BRAVOS MAYTAG.......I use the bulky setting mostly and the water temp is set at "Cold" but only HOT water goes in, even the rinse is HOT. The cold water works on other settings. Is this a computer issue? I have an extended warranty that ends in May.
