What Would You Do?

What Would You Do?

3 жыл бұрын

An applicant is interviewing for a job as a bartender but the manager tells them the job might be a little "too fast-paced" and they might not "fit in" because of their age. How might you respond to this #WWYD scenario? Actor Sutton Foster joins John Quiñones behind-the-scenes to help guide this scenario about age discrimination.

What would you do when you think no one is watching? What Would You Do? (WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go awry. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.

@James Doyle Is not really that easy. In America, many ppl think it's only a job if you get paid, so if you don't get paid it isn't experienced. I applied at Target, for the clothing position. I was denied bc I didn't had enough experience despite the fact I was a volunteer worker for 2 years, at my local food pantry working in the clothing sections, which I interact a lot with customers. Target wasn't the only place that completely ignore my volunteer experience.

Organizations have more sophisticated ways to know how old you are. I think that in this scenario, you might want to show up in person to fill an application. But, generally speaking, these days people do it online and most companies use AI to scan the applications to figure out how old you are without directly asking you. For instance, "What level of schooling you have," "When did you graduate from college", etc.. So, people are denied the job by a computer before anyone sees your resume or application. I was at my local McDonald's one time when a young disabled kid stopped by to get a job application and was told by an assistant manager that they did not have any openings and therefore she could not give him a job application. I immediately jumped in and said to her, "You know that what you are doing is illegal in California, don't you? You MUST give him an application and allow him to fill it out if you don't want to be sued, according to the ADA you cannot discriminate against people with disabilities." She went to the office and gave the kid the job application. He didn't get the job I suppose bc I've never seen him again there, but you cannot be a bystander. You have to let people know that what they're doing is wrong. You also have to let people know when they are going a great job.

On a real note, I worked in a kitchen for my first job then was a server when I was 19 and I can safely say most of the older staff did a much better job with 9/10 aspects of the job. Now I know I can’t speak for everyone or the other restaurants out there but all I’ll say was during the interview all they valued was experience and references, and I honestly feel like their applications were taken much more seriously than someone in their twenties or thirties would, since they actually understand work ethic and how to get a job done. P.S. 95% of any workplace drama involved the middle aged/younger workers. Out of my favorite 5 coworkers, 2 of them were senior citizens.

As a person with advanced degrees and also multiple barriers to employment, I can say I would prefer hiring managers and interview panel members to be direct. The norm is: at the start of the interview when the interviewer(s) first see the candidate, they think to themselves “we can’t hire this person. He/she is ” They carry out the interview, tell you that you are very good, and then never respond to your attempts to contact. The takeaway message from this segment of WWYD is: it’s not ok to discriminate out loud. And indeed 99.9% of people don’t discriminate out loud. What they do discretely, that’s another story. If this scenario were in real life, the manager would take the applicant’s papers and then throw it out in the back. Nobody would notice anything out of the ordinary. It’s life.

I work as a waitress and barmaid in a large chain restaurant in England. I am 22. Most of the people who i work with front of house are all under 30. But our 2 most efficient and popular waiting staff are older. Their dedication to the job and their ability to cope even when it is really busy and their efficiency and work ethic are second to none. The put us young ones to shame. Experience has value.

Even if it's illegal to discriminate a job candidate based on age, it happens all the time whether consciously or subconsciously. I mean, if you're applying to become a promo model at a trade show to represent a company, they have every right to discriminate applicants based on age and other superficial factors because looks are a big aspect of the role.

She knew all the regulars by name, it was like living an episode of cheers. You'd walk in and she would light up start talking about her grandkids and asking about what was new in your life. She knew our beer and cocktail preference and would recommend new menu items based on what we liked and didn't like.
