Great video. "Kiss those big balls.." Lol. Good tip re: props on the approach, simple physics but easily forgotten.

Subscribed, I just move up from a 258 vista single to a 08 silverton 36 convertible with twin 8.1 volvos so I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. Great information and footage. Your channel is now my go to KZfaq channel for passing the time after work. Thanks for sharing

Excellent job guys. Chris, do you prefer the throttle/gear together set up or the old way (like mine) of two shifters on one side and two throttles on the other?
@AskCaptainChris
@AskCaptainChris 4 жыл бұрын
Dave Tichenor it’s all what you get used to. Our single engine lobster boat had two sticks and our twin engine full displacement trawler had four sticks. My wife and I were comfortable using both. When we started our business most used-boats had two sticks per engine. As newer boats came on the market the shifting and throttle were accomplished in one stick per engine. For the new boater this was easier to learn and process and the rest of us just learned to accommodate. Sort of like moving from driving a sporty car with a standard shifter then driving an automatic. And today, like being used to inserting the key and driving a traditional automatic with a shifter stick then hopping in a car with a push button start and a knob to turn when shifting from park to reverse or drive. It’s all what you get used to. FYI the two stick per engine is a mechanical design and the electronic single stick per engine is known as fly by wire. There are other products on the market but these are the two more common found on boats. BTW we’ve worked with clients who had an older boat with four sticks that needed some serious adjustments to allow for easier shifting. They were all set to have a bow thruster installed to make docking easier. We convinced them to wait on the thruster until they had the 4 sticks converted to electronic 2-shifters (a fairly reasonable conversion). It made things so easy for close quarter maneuvering that they decided NOT to install thrusters.

Can’t you adjust the indent on the shifters to create more resistance?
@AskCaptainChris
@AskCaptainChris 4 жыл бұрын
J P it is called detent and I guess you can shim the spring tension to adjust the resistance. It is better to just learn the feel of the existing control levers. This owner had never owned a boat before so he was new to everything and adjusting well.

Nice job. Good but gentle admonishment to keep the hands off the wheel and just use the sticks for close in maneuvering.

Bob P in close quarter maneuvering you cannot steer if you’re not in gear. 😆

@@AskCaptainChris Yes, tough to get into the mindset to steer only with the throttles until you get used to it. Now it comes pretty naturally (even if I still screw it up occasionally).

Bob P practice makes muscle memory. The more you do it the less you have to think about it. Compare it to how easily you drive a car after a few years vs when you first started behind the wheel as a novice. Muscle memory. 👍🏼👍🏼

Is it bad that when I look at that graph, I’m looking for structure, grass and fish? 😂

You are looking through the eyes of a fisherman. We are looking through the eyes of a boater- seeing nothing is good which means nothing to hit the props or rudders. :-)

Capt Chris, I'm sure you must have some 'incidents' with all this instruction to new skippers that you provide. I think some video's on what not to do, with real life examples, would be in order and interesting to watch. I've never seen you assume control of a boat if things were going horribly wrong.

gjm666 that’s because if I take control then I put the camera down. 😎 if you’ve watched all our playlists you probably see a few goofs. Our aim on this channel is not to embarrass anyone or show the attention grabbing crash and burn videos. We encourage and try to teach the proper way so you know what is supposed to happen. When we come aboard your boat we won’t publish your awkward moments either.
