(Links Below) Wow, what an insane week! To cap it off I get Nikon's new 14-24 and Z6ii. Lets just say I've been waiting for that lens since I saw it's dark outline on the Z roadmap 2 years ago. After just five days with it, you'd have to literally pry it away from me ala Heston. In this video, I'll give you my initial impressions of the Z6ii and tell you why this new 14-24 rocks compared with every other ultrawide lens I've used over the years. I'll share my test images and sharpness test comparisons created using Reikan's FoCal Pro software.

That's a really useful and astute coverage of the new wide zoom and Z6 II. I've watched a few reviews on KZfaq and they don't come close to covering the important points of the Z system like edge sharpness comparisons between the various comparable lenses, and many other points. TA!

Hey Hudson, aside from your most comprehensive thoughts on gear where you dot every i and cross every t, you said something really profound at the end. About being and staying creative to deal with the trying times we face. Also, as a person gets older, the excitement and thrill of creating something out of thin air is great motivation to get out of bed in the morning, and it brings joy to living, and keeps a person motivated and excited to keep on living. It was a very wise and profound thing to say. 😎👍

that 14-24 is AWESOME! it's on my xmas wish list. Another great video. thank you. update: I'm definitely not a patient person. If I can't do something lightening fast, it's not for me. Whether it's a project, learning, whatever. Make it go faster. So I was pretty surprised when this video ended. I was absorbed. A rare occasion as you might have gathered. so again, thank you Hudson. My Z6 has two lenses, the z24-70/4S and the z70-200/2.8S and now, maybe It'll get the 14-24/2.8 stable mate. who'd have thought it. LOL

Handy tip for anyone who feels they've been fiddling with the lens cap to get it on - just look once to make sure the NIKKOR branding on the lens cap is right side up, as in, you can read it straight on. That's how it fits into the sculpted ridges on the lens. If the NIKKOR text is sideways or angled, it will not go on and you will have to fiddle. Thanks for the comprehensive review and insights, Hudson. Cheers.

Great review on the new lens. It's hard not to want these 2.8 pro lenses. One of the real features of the 14-30 S lens is the ability to use 82mm filters which is unique for an ultra wide. A real plus for slowing water and when needing a polarizer. It's currently my favorite S glass and so compact. Well.... that and the 70-200 S which is another amazing lens

I just bought this lens, can’t wait to use it for super wide shots at events and everything else. When I owned the Z6, I did have the 24-70 2.8 s but had to sell my Z system at the time for funds. Now I’m back with the Z6ii and Z7ii and loving them at events with the 50 1.2 and 20 1.8. When there’s more light and I need more distance, I have my 70-200. Looking at that MC 105 2.8 S.

the way you feel about the 14-24 2.8 and 70-200 2.8, yeah, if you ever pick up the 24-70 2.8, I think you'll feel the difference there as well! I can't precisely pinpoint what that lens does in its rendering, but I can always tell "oh I must have shot this with the 24-70 2.8 S". Thanks for another great video!

Yeah, the 50 1.8 is also like that. It's so much lighter and amazing in really low light situations that I'm gonna carry that for those in between epic moments and move my feet. I've always done that versus carrying that third giant lens. I'm one of those guys who loves to live at either end of the spectrum more than the middle most of the time. :-) I've handled and shot with it. I know it's awesome. But to be honest, the first 24-70 I've fallen in love with is the F4 because of the size, sharpness and way it handles on the body. It's so perfect to have with you all the time do it all lens.

Great video Hudson as always, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on your complete in-depth review of the Z6II. I've been considering upgrading to the Z6 for the past few months and decided to wait due to the fact that I knew these cameras were coming soon. Glad I did. Although for my intended use, the original Z6 is still a more than viable option, I feel that with the refinements that Nikon has made on it, the Z6II is a camera that will withstand the test of time better and therefore, a better investment. Anyway, keep up the good work, all the love from Scotland!

This is all great to hear! Please let us know birds in flight asap! :D I'd love if the ii's can compete with my d500 ... meaning the 7ii on dx mode could be a viable replacement for a d500 which could mean I could start selling off my fmounts (before the prices drop to far) in order to upgade to this beautiful zmount glass. (I'm dying to see the announcement for the 100-400s considering the viability of the zTC 2x)

Thanks for yet another great informative video. A couple of points regarding the Z6 II. Its raw files are not yet supported by Adobe! Is it time to work exclusively with ON1? And I wish one could use the prioritized viewfinder AND get a preview of the photos on the LCD! Right now, (as far as I understood), one has to use the automatic switching mode to get the preview on the LDC, and this draws too much on the battery. (I am trying to avoid the preview in the viewfinder as I find it too disturbing for street photography.) All in all, I was happy to be able to sell my Z6 the day I got the Z6 II. Best,

This is the best review I've seen. Thanks for it. One question, though. Regarding the Focal sharpness test, is that executed at a particular focal length? If so, which one? If it is at 14mm for the first three lenses, it would be nice to compare the 20mm 1.8 with the 14-24mm at 20 mm. Thanks!

Good point about putting 12MP lenses on >40MP sensors. When the 2009 Nikkor came out we were still being sold on "lenses optimized for digital" at the time. I've used the 14-24 over ten years and am well acquainted with it. Biggest problem is the big green arc you can generate across the frame and I'm curious how the new lenses behave.

Do you find a need for both 14-24S and 20mm F1.8S? I use the 14-24S all the time for architecture and interior design work, so that lens has paid for itself... But, I really *want* the 20mm prime for astro work, dedicated. While the 14-24S is fine for some wide-angle astro work (untracked), does the 20mm prime offer enough benefit over the 14-24 that it's worth buying it too? Appreciate all the work you put into these videos! I'm gonna need to sign up for one of your workshops some time in the future... Maybe next year!

I'll add that to the list. To be honest... I mostly use manual focus when I'm operating the camera for video except in more static situations where face and eye detect work with a subject. In those cases I find they work incredibly well already on the first generation Z6 and Z7 that I can't imagine much room for improvement. I film a lot of my videos (including this one) with the Z6 and the 50 1.8 wide open with AF-F and Eye detect. It's crazy how it tracks me. I don't even worry about it any more.

@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
No. You can take your F-mount lenses to the very short flange Z mount with the FTZ adapter, but you can't move a Z lens to any other camera. It has the shortest flange distance on the market. That's the distance from the rear element to the sensor. That gives two advantages to the Z mount. 1. Having the elements so close to the lens with such a wide opening means the engineers can really do magical seeming things optically and 2. you can use an adapter to mount anyone else's lens to your mount, but no one can adapt your lenses to another mount.

I have read that the 14-30mm Z has a forced profile correction in it's Exif that is forced , to the point where lightroom does NOT allow you to turn it off. This is a huge issue for me as in nature wide field I use the distortion to really make foreground elements bulge/pop. Does nikon force this in software like lightroom on the 14-24mm S as well? I also do not think 112mm threaded filters gives anyone a decent solution for CP or ND filter use... I love nikon but they are freaking nuts if they think that helps us lol.
@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the 14-30 has some distortion removal included that you'd have no desire to turn off. Nothing that's extreme. The 112s are absofreakinglutely wonderful. I've always advocated 82mm so you can size down from bigger glass, but you still have vignetting issues with ultrawides. No more. I can stack several magnetic 112s at 14 with zero vignetting. I can use it on my 95mm 500PF. It fits 3 of the four lenses in my bag by simply snapping the shared 112 hood in place with a 1/4 twist. No threading at all except to put an adapter on my 24-70 F4 from 72-112. Goodbye stuck threads and vignetting. Quarter twist and the hood is in place, pull the filter out and click it's in place, big enough to cover anything you throw at it and all the top S glass is designed to accept it. It's absolutely amazing and with the thin filters from Kase it takes less room in my bag for 6 of them than it did for traditional threaded 82s. It's a killer system.

The funny thing is that it's subtle the difference at F8 between those two. Email me hi@hudsonhenry.com and I'll share a DB link. If you don't need the fast aperture, I think the size, weight, price and versatility of the F4 makes it no contest. Where the 2.8 will shine is stars and ultra-low lit event work handheld or ultra wide shallow depth of field stuff.(wedding details, etc.). For landscape work in daylight to twilight, the F4 is a serious winner.

As Nikiin hybrid shooter Im still on the fence about the Z cameras. If Sony is offering video and stills backup from nearly 3 years ago, what are Nikon up to. Plus the mixed media and limited recording time aren't helpful. You can pretty well guess what the A74 will be like, its going to offer a substantial package.

There is a lot of places where you want to take whole scene at once or 24-70mm can't help enough. 14-24mm has its own place to fill that need. Fore Nikon shooter, 14-24 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 could be "must-have-trio" anyways..

My Z6II just came in this afternoon. So far, not real impressed with the animal eye focus - more testing needed. The FTZ needed a firmware update - had no idea an adaptor had firmware! My XQD card reader did NOT work with the CFexpress card; had to order a new card reader. It's just a bit different from the Z7 that there is a learning curve so I'm working on leveling that. I have the 14-30mm (used the heck out of my 12-24mm on the D500) but oddly enough, the wide angle has not received the love I expected. Hoping the Z6II can give my D500 a run for its' money in the action department. Finally got notified I can order a 500mmPF lense (since getting on the list April 2019!) but dang, think now I'll wait to see what Z glass in the telephoto range comes available. :^)
@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
That may be a wait and the 500pf is pretty dang great on the FTZ... Yeah XQD and cfexpress are a different interface. Cfexpress is pci which makes it way faster. I'm a fan of Pro Grade's readers. If you're on PC you'll need to assign them drive letters every time you format them too. Microsoft hasn't tagged the format as flash memory yet I guess. No such worries on my Mac though. I haven't tried animal eye detect yet, but Human eye detect is very impressive and I love the wide area support for that. Adobe hasn't added any support for the NEF files yet. Not even the latest dng converter... Ah the joys of the bleeding edge. :)

Im on the edge of buying the 14-24 2.8. Lots of night scapes and low light events and i want to get in to astro more. I currently have the 24-70 4S 50mm 1.8S. How is the 14-24 2.8S on 24mm vs the 24-70 4s on 24mm?

The 24-70 in incredibly sharp at 24mm even wide open and in the corners. That's what keeps me from getting the 24-70 2.8. Well that and having the 50 like you. The 14-24 is certainly a bit sharper, but you'll rarely notice it without extreme pixel peeping. But just remember that 14 is nearly 42% wider than 24mm. It lets you render the world and especially night scenes in an entirely new way. Hit me up with any follow ups via email. I can't recommend this lens highly enough to those who can afford to add it to the kit. If you'd consider using my links, I'd surely appreciate it. :-) www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks

I have looked at a number of tests, including astro tests, and it seems the 14-24S is actually better than the prime 20mm f1.8, even when both are at f2.8... I find that a little bit shocking as I would expect much more from the 20mm f1.8 being prime, especially stopped down 1+1/3 ! However the tests didn't take into account the color rendition, it was more about stars and aberrations. I suspect (and hope) the color rendition and shadow depth would be better with the prime.. Anyhow, your feedback would be appreciated :)

For me coming from the fujifilm 10-24mm f4 I see a monumental improvement when compared to my 14-30mm f4. For landscape photographers there's pretty much no reason to get the faster lens. Looking at the charts between f8 and f11i think unless your pixel peeping, you'll never really see a noticeable improvement.

I really wish you had gotten the z6 II in in time to test the lenses on it with the 24 MP sensor. I know the z7 and z7 II are higher resolution so I was wondering if I would see much difference in sharpness between the 14-24 z and the 14-30 z on the z6 II as there is on the z7 II. I'm a hobbyist and it's hard to justify the cost of the 14-24 but I spend my money on what I want. I have the Tamron 14-24 G2 and the Sigma sport 70-200 and both have focus breathing issues. I know both the 14-24 and the 14-30 have very little if any focus breathing problems. At some point I might sell my two lenses and get the z lenses for the 24-70 and 70-200. I do want them in f/2.8 but I don't need f/2.8 in a wide angle. I also have the new 20mm for astro. If I need 14mm I can always get the Samyang 14mm. Plus there's the added cost of the new filters for the 14-24. I really don't want to have to carry 2 sets of filters or pay up to $1000 on top of the lens that's $1500 more. I think the 14-30 will do what I need it to do on the z6 II? Your thoughts on that?

The 14-30 and 24-70 F4 S lenses are phenominal. Both are stunningly sharp on both the Z7 and z6 bodies. I'm excited for the new 24-120 too. It may replace my 24-70. I didn't buy the 2.8 24-70 because the F4 was so good and small. I do adore the 14-24 S, but I'm an ultra wide junkie. If I hadn't tried it, I'd have been happy with the 14-30 even on the Z7ii. Nikon has yet to release even a mediocre Z lens. The 20 and 50 1.8s are faves of mine too. I can't recommend the Rokinon any more though. The S glass 14s just destroy even the SP 2.4 I got rid of mine. You're much better with the 20 1.8 and a move shoot move tracker.

@@HudsonHenryPhoto I've been thinking about getting the move shoot move tracker. It's not that expensive and cheaper than a lens. The only problem I have with it is I'd have to drive to another location to get a clear sky for the tracked shots. I live in north Alabama and there are trees everywhere. There's a lot of farms around too but it's all private property.but that would be fine if I'm doing a blue hour shot for the foreground. I've been trying that a little more this year to get a clean shot of the foreground. It's a lot easier to shoot especially if I need to focus stack the foreground.

Not sure if I'm in the minority, but there are literally thousands, if not millions of users still planning on keeping our DSLR's, so I do find some of the mirrorless video's interesting, but not to the point where I'll spend thousands of hard earned $$ to switch, as so far, I've not seen image improvement with the Z system 'in the images' worthy of all the $$ it takes to change over, and I'm quite happy with the output of my DSLR. With that said, I'm thankful you put what your planning on discussing in the title, as those of us uninterested in the Z system, we can pass over the videos. I tend to keep all 'Hudson Henry' e-mails on upcoming video's, and I've watched them, with the raves of things becoming easier...but easy isn't my priority, it's capturing the composition I want, and my DSLR is doing that just fine. Not sure how many DSLR owners have, or may drop watching these video's, but I thought it worthwhile to perhaps get you to continue with some regular FX system video's for that reason. Hey, it never hurts to hope, as I know some still using film cameras, and the forums are full of DSLR questions/answers still thankfully, and will for decades to come.

I appreciate that Dale. I was in your camp after trying and hating a lot of mirrorless systems before the z6 arrived at my door two years ago. I was sure I'd send it back and go right back to my beloved D850. Instead I ate some crow, ordered a Z7 and never looked back. I'll always mix in post production and adventure and the art of photography in ways that are as applicable to phones as they are to film or DSLRs. But... I can't imagine going back to DSLRs after two years with the Z's. And I'll disagree and state unequivocally that the image quality they squeeze from the new glass for this system is significantly superior. That wider mount and shorter flange distance is making new things possible. I was blown away by how far the light little F4 outperforms my beloved old huge 14-24 2.8 F mount. Blown away, it's not even close. The new 14-24 2.8S is simply mind bending, but not necessary for most. The F4 is so good. The future is definitely moving away from the DSLR at a faster and faster pace. The good news if you change your mind is that the best nikon F glass adapts perfectly to the Zs. The bad news is you can't use this crazy new S glass on the DSLRs. :(

Interesting video but rather then shooting F/22 sunstars you do really need to focus on the continuing glaring shortcoming in Nikon mirrorless cameras, fast action subject tracking. Funny, with the latest firmware update on the Z6 and Z7 I'm getting about a 90% hit rate in continuous high speed shooting birds in flight and kitesurfing with my 500 on the FTZ adapter: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fL1of7CY2Ji5hWw.html When did you last test the Z cameras' AF tracking? I'll bet you'd be surprised what they've done in firmware. The Z6ii's dual processor seems to make it even better, but I need to get out testing more fast action like that section of video I linked or birds in flight. Sadly I feel that a lot of the hating on Nikon's AF with mirrorless is either a vestige from their half baked initial 1.0 AF firmware or simply sponsored by competitors. I haven't felt the need to reach for my D500 at all based on AF needs in quite a while.
