We were prepared to watch for everything! Never commented on a video. But I felt the need to comment on this one because this was literally the video that informed me that the eclipse was happening. I missed the last one regrettably, so I after watching this instantly booked a hotel and drove 4 hours to see it. There truly are no words to describe how it was. Except as Michael Steven’s said “Awesome”. Your brain breaks, you get emotional. You just can’t believe the thing you’re seeing. I’m just wanting to thank you for informing me about this and I want to reiterate what you said in this video. If you EVER have the chance to see a total eclipse. See it. There is no way to hype it up too much.

Just got home from a 15 hours round trip from Las Vegas to Dallas just for the eclipse and I'm so Glad I did. What an amazing, thrilling and emotional experience. The fact that I got to share the experience and my equipment with a few dozen strangers made it even more worth while. Thank you Destin for all your tips and suggestions.

The eclipse in Salem Oregon a few years back was such a cool experience. Right after the eclipse a raccoon started walking in the park in the middle of the day-poor little guy was as confused as we were.

I saw it in 2017, and it was really fantastic. I would recommend that people ignore the filming and taking pictures. Let others do that. You can just get those on the internet. But what you see with your own eyes is so much more compelling

Gog to take my family to see it in Wooster, Ohio. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. We got around 3 minutes of dark, but it's like a really rare roller coaster. My kids were excited going into it, and mindblown once it actually happened. I gotta thank you, Destin, because when I first watched this video, it made me start planning to bring my family to it, whereas before I really had no plans to go. Totality in Madras Oregon 2017 was AWESOME. My advice: 1.Don't get so wrapped up in trying to take pictures of totality that you miss it. Try to take in what is going on around you. (There will be thousands of professional pictures available online. Only you can take pictures of your family and friends' reactions experiencing this incredible moment. those are our favorite pictures) 2. Try to be out in a field where you can feel the temperature change the most. 3. Get to wherever you want to view extremely early. 3b. Monitor the weather days ahead and have alternate sites planned. 4. Have a full tank of gas, water, and food for 2 days, and something to pee in. Anticipate traffic, even in the middle of nowhere, being gridlocked for hours, if not most of the day. 5. Do not plan on being able to be back at work the next day on time if you have to travel. 6. GO! I hope everyone can experience this at least once in their lifetime. Enjoy the moment.

Our house in Bloomington Indiana is directly perfectly centered with the shadow so we will be having a cook out and enjoying the show.. so glad we don’t have to leave the house and deal with traffic

Just experienced this eclipse in southeast Oklahoma. Cloud cover broke 20 minutes before totality. It was amazing to see it in person!

I drove 400 miles for the 2017 totality. Words escape the feeling. It can't believe that I'm able to see another one, because it felt like a once in a lifetime experience.

I live in a town that’s directly in the path of the eclipse. They are estimating our population is going to quadruple. And as excited as I am about it, it is going to suck lol. UPDATE: My town embraced everyone! From the UK to Hong Kong we had tons of visitors who came! Everything went off without a hitch and I couldn’t be more proud of my community! What a beautiful event and a beautiful time to live!

Thank you for your videos. I teach 6th grade science and constantly use your videos in my class and in my "video libraries" (collections of videos that kids are allowed to watch when they finish work early), and my wife and I watch every new video eating dinner. I re-watched this one this morning as we were making final preparations for the eclipse. We live in the totality band, so we were able to invite all of the family over and have a cook out. The forecast was terrible and predicted to be heavy clouds... the forecast was botched. There were clouds, but they were far between. From the moment of C1 and the alarms started sounding on my phone (the eclipse app), I had goose bumps. I could not believe the weather cleared. I have hundreds of photos to process through and a time lapse thanks to a GoPro. I have only looked at a few of the pics from totality and my mind is blown. The most stunning so far is a pic at C3 that shows the smallest edge of the sun along with red flares (they look like solar flares in the picture, not sure what to call them yet). Thank you again for your work and your videos.

Destin, after watching a selection of your videos, I thought to myself how much I enjoy and appreciate the content you provide. While doing this I had a similar feeling that you described while watching the wonderful human being that was Fred Rogers. Our house was in totality in 2017. We invited as many people as we could from our old neighborhood in an adjacent state. I was surprised by how many people weren't interested, but the families who came were all blown away. I highly recommend it.

Thanks to this I took time off work to travel and got to witness it in person. That was phenomenal.

Destin, I wanna let you know that this video convinced me to take my family to see the eclipse in totality. Thank you for that; you were right. It was beyond beautiful. It is a memory I will have forever with my parents now. One awesome thing nobody mentioned though: the false sunrise from the west at the end! Seeing that pink and purple haze from the wrong direction was mind-blowing!

2017 Eclipse went over my hometown. We gathered outside with the family and dozens of strangers, watched with the safety of our glasses, and enjoyed totality without them. Looking at the weird crescent moon shadows, the moments leading up, the event itself... The only way I know how to describe it is "emotional." It was like a primal trigger clicked in my brain. To this day when I think back on it I'm nearly on the verge of tears - it was awesome in the most literal sense.

The path was about 40 minutes north of my home in 2017. I tried to convince friends and neighbors to travel with me North to Experience the total experience, where I lived just missed totality and I knew the experience at home, as cool as it might seem, would not compare to the experience of witnessing the eclipse directly in the totality path. I ended up driving North alone. I was worried about all the traffic that should have been heading to the path. I didn't run into any traffic, but it's a factor to consider on your trip if you decide to go yourself. The experience was spectacular. I feel sorry my friends and family were so close to having the same experience but just didn't want to? Their mistake. Don't make that mistake. Even if it's a full day's drive, go for it.

Destin, you were 100% right. Seeing the eclipse was the best moment of my life so far. Thank you for motivating me to drive and see it.

I would probably not have made the 3 hour drive to see it, and would be less of a person for it, had you not shared this video and the SET app. Despite the uncertainty due to cloud cover in Texas, we went and it was absolutely stunning!!!! We caught a break in the clouds and had an unobstructed view of the eclipse (although that is an obstructed view of sorts…).

The solar eclipse in 2017 happened in my backyard. I was a young adult and had been waiting for that eclipse for about a decade. Even with all of that anticipation, it still blew my mind! My heart was racing as I took it all in. It was truly one of the most unique experiences I’ve had in my life, and I WILL be doing everything I possibly can to see this next one.

My wife, daughter, grandson and I drove up to Burlington, Vermont from just south of Boston on Monday and returned that night. In site of almost 19 hours of driven there and back Ivan happily report that watching the eclipse was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! I am also happy to report that my 7 year old grandson was a minor celebrity on Tuesday at school when he reported to his class of the event being the only one that saw and experienced the totality first hand. I was in WY for the 2017 eclpise. I was prepared for a kumbaya harmony kind of mystical event. What I experienced was a birds stopped chirping, it got cold and dark really fast. My lymbic system was on high alert. Bring back that sun. Without the sun, we are dead. It was an amazing experience.

Hi, Great video! I’m a self taught astronomer/eclipse chaser. I live in Ingersoll, Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 I have to travel 5 minutes from my home to see totality. This will be my 6th total. I have travelled thousands of miles/kilometres to watch this amazing spectacle. I drove 30 hours to catch the annular eclipse in October. The best is a total without a doubt. I would like to purchase the doctor’s book. I’ll watch the video again to learn his last name. Praying for clear skies! ♥️

In 2017 I lived less than 30 miles from the path of totality. I didn't understand that a short distance means all the difference in the world between the experience you will get with seeing totality and just a partial eclipse. In 2024 we had a family get together at a great spot within the path of totality. I gladly drove 150 miles, not wanting to miss it again. I knew it was going to be great, but I didn't expect the emotional reaction. There are lots of wonders in the world, but I can't think of any that give you the same overwhelming emotion as when you see a total eclipse. I had my video camera rolling as we were awaiting totality and the reaction I had when I first took off my glasses was genuine. Watching that clip brings back all of the emotions.

Booked plane, hotel, car. Waited 7 years. Excited for an unforgettable trip.

In 2017 I Traveled 5 hours south to Bowling Green, KY sat and watched the eclipse, in awe, and 25 mins later I was back on the road for another 5 hours to make my shift at work that night. Lucky to be in the path of totality where I live today, but I will be driving to my Fathers because his house is DIRECTLY in the center of the totality path. Can’t wait.

We drove about 100 miles and watched from out on a lake. It was EVERYTHING!!!

This event was freaking spectacular!! The weird feelings right before totality and after was so new and something that doesn't happen too often. Totality was beautiful, something that is engraved in my memory now. The weirdest thing was seeing the "shadow bands" right before and after. I was so happy that everything worked out telescope and camera wise, and I was able to see it with my own eyes too. It's an unbelievable experience that I encourage you to see in your lifetime!!

I watched Mr. Rogers a lot when I was little, and sometimes I go dig up an episode to watch online simply to experience that simple happiness again. You are different with your channel, giving me different feelings, BUT! The excitement, the learning, the laughter and happiness your videos provide is something I really love. I just wanted to comment to tell you that your video was so helpful in allowing us to maximize the eclipse experience. The app did not work for me (off on timing) but the ancillary stuff like your color changing was bang on. We were near Cleveland and did not see any of the snakes, too bad. The eclipse itself was amazing, and I was so happy that our 6 hour drive from Toronto to Cleveland was so worthwhile (everything near Toronto was clouded over) with perfect weather and no clouds for the event. The "spring peepers" frogs were 80 decibels the night before, and were silent during the day until the eclipse where they piped up again, amazing. I did the trip solely so that my 13 and 15 year old daughters could experience it. Leading up to it they were bored. During the event they were amazed. What more can you ask for? During the event all I could think of was Neil deGrasse Tyson's partial answer to the Universe's Most Amazing Fact: “So when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this Universe, we are in this Universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts, is that the Universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact I look up - many people feel small because they’re small and the Universe is big - but I feel big because my atoms came from those stars.” I feel big...

I drove 300 Kilometers today to experience totality for quite likely the only time in my life. I live in Nova Scotia Canada. I now intend to live long enough to see the total eclipse that will pass the shadow over the entirety of my home province. Like the entire thing. In 2079. I was born in 1995. I'll be 84, if I make it. It was quite likely the most awe inspiring thing I've ever seen in my life. I was in totality for a whopping 1 minute 10 seconds. Best of my life. I got to experiment with shadows and camera stuff it was amazing, and absolutely perspective shifting. I felt, as michael said, tiny, absolutely miniscule. I have my own incredible (to me) shots of totality that I plan to imortalize forever. And to make it better I blew off work to bring my wife, daughter and 2 year old son and spent it with them.

Fred Rogers was a national hero. I want to thank you for reminding me of that today, Destin. I feel like I understand a little better how you ended up doing what you do, and I will admit I've never thought of Mr. Rogers when I watch your videos before. I am so grateful you are one creator that creates kind of a bubble of safety from that pervasive sensationalism you find in almost all other media, and I see that now. Thank you

You convinced me to drag my family to see something that we will never forget and I think changed our lives. My kids thought I was crazy. Now they keep hugging me and thanking me for taking them.

The 2017 eclipse was close by for me and I was able to find a secluded spot near my home town dead center in totality. This one is much deeper but involves some serious driving. Worth it. My whole family are going!

This video clued me into the eclipse so I went 7 hours up to Maine and camped in a tent in the cold to witness it. Was totally worth it! We have been driving for four days down Route 66 (2000 mi. CA to Illinois) to get to this 2024 eclipse! We are excited and after watching your video I am heading out to get a poster board for shadow snakes, as well as, a bright shirt.

Watched the total solar eclipse here in Fredericton with my kids yesterday (wife watched it at work too). It was life changing. Seriously. I know that sounds like hyperbole but it wasn't. It was like day turned to night *incredibly* fast, the animals on our farm lost their minds, and seeing totality was breathtaking. The stars, the rapid temperature drop, the 360 degrees of "sunset" ... it was unlike anything else i'd ever experienced. I'm glad myself and my family got to see this.

I live a little northwest of Austin TX and I have the day scheduled off of work for this! I'm taking my family about an hour west to be in the dead center if the "Totality" zone and we are bringing blankets and chairs and a pop up table and are going to spend about an hour in a field right off a main road for this. My anticipation is bewildering to my family, but I have no doubt they will understand when the day comes.

2024/04/08: I went to see it in North America.... AND... it was the MOST AMAZING THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE so far!! Thank you to anyone that put a good word in favor of this event in order to go see it LIVE, it is SO worth it... so much... It was amazing and so incredibly impossible to describe in words... You have to watch it in person, with your own eyes 👀 I tried to watch so many videos and pictures... I can guarantee you that NONE OF THEM can barely do any justice to it! Traveled from Estonia to see this. Initial plan was around Austin, TX area. But due to weather models, drove to Hot Springs, Arkansas instead. Sky was clear. Incredible! Edit: Thank you, Destin, for making the video in 2017.

I'm 26 and in the last year I worked hard because I wanted to travel from Bologna (Italy) to Durango (Mexico), for the eclipse and to hang around for a week.. That was, by far, the most exciting and emotional experience of my life. Can't wait for the next eclipse

I'm a cynical atheist. I understand the science of the event. In 2017 experiencing the total eclipse could only be described as a religious/spiritual/magical experience. If you can, you should experience it. It's worth your time. It's worth sacrifice. Everybody is different but I find it hard to imagine someone could be completely unmoved. (I know I sound like a cultist.)

I just need to comment on this because before watching this video, I didn't really care much. After watching it, I was like "hey since I'm in the path, might as well take pictures and see it" thinking it wasn't going to be super amazing, just kinda fun. I got more excited as time got closer, this morning there were clouds which made me sad as I thought that might mean eclipse viewing wouldn't be great but they mostly disappeared and when it hit totality... OMG that was amazing and if it wasn't for this video, I probably would have not really care. So thank you for this amazing experience! so many people missed this and I hope more people get the chance to see it!

I'm in Carbondale, IL today. I documented barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, UV index, wind speeds, all that fun stuff for 3 hours, totality being in the middle. It was so brief, per usual, I wasn't able to remember to record the animals or insects. There's an enormous amount of data available to cross reference. Heck, I had dinner with 40 or so strangers, scientists from all over the world and the consensus is that we'll take weeks to collaborate and make accurate charts. A couple from Oregon wanted to study tidal changes but it was so far inland that they came here just to observe the darkness. It was fun, I used some of the things in this video for the neighborhood kids and even though I'm a physicist and engineer, I had to "science" to see if second contact would melt the eclipse glasses through a telescope - it did. I made some cool refractory findings I may have to apply in laser physics, but you do not want to use glasses on telescopes until totality, but then it's safe without if you're in absolute totality. What a cool experience! Fleeting, but now I'm going out to find morel mushrooms, so cool timing too.

I saw Eclipse today, and it was So Beautiful. It went over and beyond of my wildest expectation.

prompted by this video, and realizing i wouldn't have another opportunity like this any time soon (without hopping on a cruise ship), sunday night i checked weather forecasts, booked a hotel stay in cleveland, and set off on a long drive from philadelphia... i observed everything @smartereveryday described (wavy edges of shadows, color-shifts in the brick courtyard of voinovich park, temperature drop, birds going into their nighttime migration, etc.) and another profound phenomenon i wasn't expecting: a full wraparound sunset as far as the eye can see... awesome, truly.

I remember the one in 2017 and it brought tears to my eyes. I wasnt expecting the birds to stop chirping. It was kinda eery, just wild.

I used to be in the boat of "the moon gets in the way of the sun big deal, I can and have seen pictures of it", but in 2017 since the path of totality was very close by, I made a point to go out and see it... It is so much more than the moon getting in the way of the sun. If you're able to travel and see it, you will not regret it. No photo or video can truly replace being there.

I drove 332 miles with my girlfriend of 5 years to be as close to the center of totality as possible! The experience was incredible. We saw STRONG shadow bands and I just happened to grab my rainbow parasol for shade but quickly realized it would be perfect to demonstrate Purkinje effect. Baily’s beads, plasma plumes, diamond ring, we pretty much got it all in AR! I was with my grandson, son, and DIL who is a HS science teacher-we nerded out like nobody’s nerded before!

We went and I have also been converted to a totality zone chaser! It was amazing.

Just saw the eclipse from my driveway. The view during totality was incredible! Wow!

I’m in northern vermont right now and the weather for the eclipse looks perfect I’m so excited I can’t sleep

I Viewed the total Ecliose today April 8th 2024 in Erie Pennsylvania. The sky was over cast but became clear right before the event! It was epic and would recommend it to anyone. The only draw back was the traffic leaving added 2.5 hrs to the trip 😢.
