In this garden tour we show you everything we have going on in our garden in April in Wisconsin. Even though Spring has just begun, there is plenty to do!
We are pruning herbs, including lavender and sage, transplanting seedlings, and getting ready to plant in our big garden. We'll show you our raised beds, our greenhouses and our Greenstalk planter. You won't believe how big our garlic is already!
5 simple steps to improve your soil: • 5 simple steps to impr...
We try to grow all of our own food so we can be as self-sufficient as possible. We live in zone 5A in Southern Wisconsin and we live on less than one acre. Our main garden is about 1,000 sq. ft., we have raised beds, and we also grow food on our fence. It's possible to feed your family from your own garden no matter how much space you have.

I've tried multiple times to overwinter kale in my zone 5a MN garden and it's never worked, so congrats to you! Since kale is biennial, yours should bolt and go to seed this summer. If it were me I'd definitely let it do that and keep the seeds since the parent plants are well-suited for your environment!

I didn't consider saving the seeds. What a great idea! It just started flowering this week. I'm definitely going to do that!

Great garden tour, love to see what you have growing on. What did you fertilize your garlic with?

Thanks! We use Keene Garlic's garlic fertilizer. They make a special organic blend just for garlic.

@@norasark Ok that's cool, haven't tried it. I usually mix in some azomite and chicken manure at the time of planting in the Fall, then nothing after that. But I was wondering what others were using, thanks for the response.

Garlic is looking great!!! Do you keep some heads from prior year or purchase new seed garlic??

Thank you!! In the past, we have purchased new seed garlic. But this year was the first year that we used all of our own heads saved from the prior year! We saved the biggest and healthiest looking bulbs and it definitely paid off 😊

@@norasark This will be out first year using our own seed garlic and onion seeds from one that went to flower. The onions are doing better then when we purchase seeds.

For the Greenstalk planter? We used Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil this year.
