April Vokey was our guest at the tying table on our fly fishing fair and she showed us her great tying steps for steelhead flies and she really was superb in giving us her tips and tricks.

i just purchased my first rotary vice. some say you don't need all that fancy schmancy stuff. old timers i swear!!! i have an old clunker clamp style that i used for a while. you have to loosen too much to turn your fly and risk your hook falling out. i can see all around it now and do other things i couldn't do before. also, when you space your feathers like that and say it looks life like in the water really made me think about tying my own like that. thanks alot! i've watched some of your other videos too! very nice fish you landed. wish i could live at the ocean!!!!

Nicely done...at a pace where each step is easily comprehended. Use of the f/nail clippers is both ergonomic and economic at the same time. Ya, I'd fish that on the Bulkley in a heartbeat. Cheers, KD Smithers, BC

Try it. I took a course with her and thought the same thing at first. I don't cut everything with it, but it does a great job cutting the feathers close to the tube.

Nice work April...& the use of a nail-clipper is a neat trick lol.. I wonder if she fishes her flies as well ? I've only ever seen two vids of lady fly-tyers . I like the expression of total concentration on her face..she looks so happy tying .

It's an intruder fly, krystal flash, craft fur / arctic fox fur, rhea (which she used) or maribou ( however cold water destroys maribou) can use ostrich as well if you are in a pinch.

Next time when u burn the fly try turning the lighter on the other side of ur thumb that way u wont burn urself and please hold it up when ur finished close to the camera so we can see what a great job u have done thank you for the vid.

I use $100.00 pair of scissors. April uses 0.59 cent nail clippers. Think about that ... your teaching skills are very precious. Best regards and God bless.

Can I ask you something? I don't think this question fits the fly tiers? Does head cement break down upon contact with plastic worms and lures b/c it is acrylic? Worm burn to be specific? I don't wanna to use it if it does. I am going to start tying my own trebles. Thanks.

Lol, it's a tube fly. The leader goes through the tube, and the hook goes on the end of the leader behind the fly.

Totally confused! I am a fly fishing newbie. Just bought a fly rod and I have been practicing my fly casts in a field. Now I am trying to learn about tippets, leaders and flies. I stumbled on this video looking at types of flies to use. Forgive my ignorance, but..... I see fathers, I see fluffy stuff, I see sewing thread but I see no HOOK. How do you catch a steelhead if there is no hook? It looks like the fly is attached to some sort of steel rod

Tube fly. The tube is hollow. You put your tippet through it and then attach a hook at the back. There is a place in the back of the tube that is bigger in diameter and your "stinger" hook-eye sits inside there. A style of fly used so you can size hooks differently and also get more life out of your fly because the hook usually comes away during the fight and the fly is not left to get mangled by the fish.
