We bought an Aprilaire 600M whole house humidifier for our furnace recently and filmed the unboxing and review of the unit. This is the third video in the three part series that I posted. Here I actually install the whole house humidifier and do a brief walkthrough on the install process. I go over how to use the templates, where to cut out holes, the wiring, self-piercing saddle valve, ducting, etc. Then I show an example of the completed result and how it works. Hope you find this video helpful! And if you do decide to put one of these in yourself, it would be nice if you have some previous experience in this kind of thing otherwise it will be pretty tough.

NEVER USE A "saddle valve"... EVER! Always cut in a "TEE" CONNECTION WITH A PROPER 1/2" X 1/4" ISOLATION SHUT OFF VALVE. Also, please use either a 1/4" braided water supply line or soft copper line for the purposes of the water supply connections. Thru that piece of sh** plastic piping that comes with the unit away, cause you will have a leak. That 1/4" plastic crap has zero schedule and or wall thickness to it. You'll thank me later.

I hope people follow your advise - never install a " saddle value " Are these even allowed under building code ? . Also , its probably best to install a 90 elbow coming off the Plenum - and then connect the flex stuff to it . This elbow should be installed above the A/C coil . .

This video was great and helped me a ton with my install. The only thing I would suggest is not using the saddle valve. Under almost every state it is no up to code to use them. That and they have a tendency to leak and corrode. For $7 at a Lowe's or Home Depot you can get a connector valve that will do the trick and do it better. Thank you! Have a great day!

Wiring the Current sensing relay (switch) to the blower motor wire corresponding to the Heat Mode is better than just the Neutral (white); this prevents the Humidifier from running on Cool and Heat modes, especially if Humidistat becomes inaccurate. Normally the blower motor wires corresponding to Heat mode are the lower speed ones, such as Red (low), Blue (med,high), Orange (low/med).

Never tried a whole house humidifier. But, I have tried portables. Forget it! They are only good if you put one about 2 foot from where you are sleeping!! I tried 2 of the best in a 2,100 sg. ft house and unless you are right under one the humidity is 21%. Location southwest NM , 7,200 ft. alt., mountains. winter and gas heat. Max humidity with cool mist flowing over the hygrometer is only 38% !! With portables, that will have to do.

Ideally its on the supply and drawing from the hot water, cold side works. If mounted on the return it MUST draw from the hot water due to the heat exchanger in the furnace killing the humidity as the air passes through to your supply, you wont ever reach desired humidity

we connected our humidistat to the circuit board on the furnace and it burned it out. apparently the previous home owner did not install a transformer. so now we purchased a new circuit board hopefully we can get the furnace to power back on. we will go back to your video to correctly install the humidifier when we buy the transformer
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 7 жыл бұрын
Oh yikes! Yes, you need to be careful about that... Make sure you do the wiring right. There's a difference between 24 volts and 120 volts. If it fried the control board in the furnace, I wonder if the thermostat got fried as well.. If you have the same humidifier as I had in the video, that is all 24v. That's why the kit comes with a 120v to 24v transformer. There should also be a wiring diagram that shows you how to properly wire it. In the video I don't spend too much time explaining.. But anyway, good luck! Hopefully there will be no more misadventures!
@pineychristian
@pineychristian 5 жыл бұрын
@@WordofAdviceTV they probably used the low voltage from their furnace. They said they connected directly to the circuit board which the voltage on those terminals are stepped down. The reason they give an transformer because most systems factory transformer does not carry enough low voltage to handle a large secondary low voltage load. They also could have installed a 3amp fuse just incase they hooked up wrong so fuse would blow and not transformer. The main circuit board will blow if you steal too much low voltage trying to power something else.

I completely agree. Though if you do not open and close the piercing valve but always leave it opened up, you shouldn't have a problem with it sticking or leaking. I will just leave it open and not shut it at all. If it ever starts leaking or something I suppose I will have to sweat in a ball valve or something.

I am so lost how to wire this. In line with the many kind recommendations on here, I did have mine installed by an HVAC pro and it was never wired correctly. My humidifier runs opposite of what it should... only on when the furnace blower is OFF and then turns back on when the blower shuts off. I am now in the process of rewiring it myself. It never had the current sensing relay on it so I bought one of those but I cannot figure out how to properly wire this circuit. For the record, I have a Harman central pellet furnace so it does not have modern style circuit board with a HUM option.

Seeing what little room you had, I would have gone with a motorized unit. It would have given this a more professional and finished look. Also, that tilted plenum houses the AC evaporation coils and you can never install a humidifier there since it is insulated. I would move the drain line off of any heated surfaces too. Not too wild about flex pipe, but that is my view only. I have installed two of these (550 and a 360) and the motorized versions are now the only way I would go from here on out. I hope it worked well for you. I will be installing a 700 this week in my new HVAC unit.

Thanks for this video, I live in Chicago area and I just got an estimate for the humidifier, the installer suggested a bypass large whole house humidifier made by Bryant, my main concern is knowing what is the right kind of humidifier, bypass or motorized to install any advice would be very much appreciated, thank you, And my house is 2500 square-foot, and currently the humidity is in the low 20s without the humidifier which I feel is very low
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 7 жыл бұрын
20% is pretty low. A whole house humidifier would make a noticeable difference. The main difference between motorized and bypass is the bypass itself. That extra piece of ducting takes up more room and that really is the one con (which I think isn't a big deal). They both do the same thing, though the motorized one is supposedly a little more efficient since it has its own blower fan. The 2 cons to the motorized one is that it costs more and it has more parts in it that could fail, costing you more in maintenance.. I personally would go with a bypass humidifier. Like grandma used to say though: different strokes, for different folks. The decision is yours to make ;) Good luck!

Was looking for which ducting (on the intake/return vs outflow/blower) the Aprilaire box goes on, and where the humid air should be going into (on the intake/return vs outflow/blower). My house has one installed and it looks weird: the aprilaire box is on the outflow/blower, and the bypass is into the intake/return which goes thru the air filter. Weird: 1) coz the moist air goes thru the air filter - the moisture will get on the air filter. 2) Moist air will go thru the furnace! Why! 3) Inefficient coz the air is just cycling between the outflow and inflow. I have closed the flap leaving just 10% open to minimize this). Overall this setup is not making any sense. Agree moisture is getting into the outflow, I can feel it coz I do not get a dry nose. Why can't a bypass be entirely on the outflow, it needs a different routing.bypassing of the hot air thru the aprilair box and back into the outflow.

In this video I did plenty of things that I could have done better or used a better part for. I guess this would be classified as the cheap way of putting in a humidifier. But about the saddle valve, most of the guys I know put it on the hot water side. The reason behind that is that warm/hot water will evaporate a lot faster than cool water. Since we are trying to add humidity to the air, having the water evaporate faster is good. That's what I was taught anyway. Let me know if you find out something else though.

I’m contemplating on installing the water saver model Apr 400 with backup drain. Its approximately a savings of a dozen toilet flushes a day :) Trying to understand the mechanics of it, meaning how the dual floats work, relative to the sensing and water valve.
@pineychristian
@pineychristian 5 жыл бұрын
400m and 400a is a drainless humidifier. One float detects how much water is needed inside the tray the other float is a safety float to shut water valve off. The drain at bottom is just an overflow drain. The water panel is recommended from Aprilaire to replaced 2 times a season. This is my favorite humidifier cause it saves water. It only fills and use what it needs vs dumping a constant flow of water across the water panel everytime the humidifier comes on.
@pineychristian
@pineychristian 5 жыл бұрын
Please do not install your humidifier the way this guy did. Use copper tubing and ditch the saddle valve. They fail regardless if you use shut it or open a lot. Use a ball valve plumbed into your water heater. If humidifier is going to run off humidistat without a call for heat from unit then you need to use hot water. You can use cold water to a by pass humidifier. It may be a little more efficient with hot. It won't make that big of a difference. Forced fan humidifiers require hot water only to them

Saddle valves are illegal plumbing fittings. You should only use copper tubing. Hot water side is not recommended because of the changes to the water during heating. Cold water is preferred.

Great video. Wish I watched it sooner haha. Any suggestions on how to make the duct fit into the actual unit? I've ripped it 3 times trying to get the '6" duct' (maybe metric.../s) into the aprilaire unit. Did you cut flaps similarly to the ones you did for the plenum side ? Thanks !

Yes. If i remember right I only did 1-3 deeper cuts so that I could overlap the duct edge. That way it can actually slide in there. Cramming it in usually doesn't turn out pretty heh.

Thanks so much for putting this together, appreciate your taking the time. May I ask how large is your home (Sq ft) and how old? And was this humidifier sufficient for your needs? We have a 3000 sq ft home which is around 38 yrs old. Considering this and also looking at the Aprilaire 700. Hoping they will be adequate.

Our home is 1,600 sq ft. and its 47 years old. The humidifier was beyond sufficient for our needs! I left it on 40% right after I put it in and when we woke up the next morning the windows were all fogged up and dripping. So I actually leave ours between 15-20% now and that's more than enough. I am sure either of those will do the job just fine. As for the Aprilaire 700, that is the one with the fan built in right? I haven't worked on those much. The company I worked for only put in Aprilaire model 600. Manual and automatic. But anyway, hope it all goes well for you!

Is the water turned off to it by chance? If you take apart the nuts from either end of the water solenoid (don't forget to turn off water to humidifier) there should be a screen on one of them. Sometimes that gets plugged. If you have a meter, when you turn up the humidistat, check the two wires going to the water inlet valve. Is it getting 24v? If it is but it's not opening then that valve is probably bad.

Can the humidifier be turned ON either with heater or a/c? If I want to turn ON only humidifier, should I buy the motorized humidifier?
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! The humidifier is only used with the heater. You turn it off during summer. The air conditioner's main purpose is to de-humidify so if the humidifier was on they would be battling each other. About running ONLY the whole house humidifier, that is only possible if you set your fan setting on the thermostat to ON. The wiring may change a bit too. Many times it is wired to come on when the heater comes on. You would need it to be wired to come on when the fan comes on.
@pineychristian
@pineychristian 5 жыл бұрын
Takla3210 A fan powered humidifier should only be installed on upflow configurations systems like in this video. This is directly from Aprilaire due to loss of capacity in a horizontal system. Powered fan humidifiers cost more and usually the motor breaks in time plus the molex plug wears out from taking off panel to change water panel. I would recommend a by pass humidifier and 400 or 400A is a great option cause save your water. Unless your house is huge like over 3500 sq ft then you would need to go to a steam humidifier. Which is a completely different ball game. Way more money and a lot more maintenance

Not sure if this guy is a professional or diy but not Avery neat install. Flexduct is horrible. Most newer furnaces have humidifier terminals so hardwiring transformer not needed. Also you run COLD water through them. Most say in the instructions do not tie to hot water line. Good luck.

If you have a manual ‘stat then it is required so the humidifier doesn’t constantly run. It makes it so the humidifier only runs while the blower is running. This is especially necessary in older or alternative furnaces that do not have a “HUM” function on the circuit board.
