I finally get my 2021 Aprilia RS 660 on the track! After spending weeks in the garage installing parts and making modifications, I finally got to the race track for a proper shake down. These are my thoughts about my 660 and some of the modifications I made to it.

Love my RS660 and have the exact same plans as you with yours. planning to race with AFM and CRA maybe next year on it. Btw, hilarious how it seems like you have a good pace, then an actual pro racer passes everyone like they're standing still 😂 Josh Herrin did the same thing to me at Buttonwillow a couple years ago. I was like YEP I'll never be a pro racer.

Awesome! As long as my bank account allows, I’ll be out there next season with ya! I’ve had the chance to ride behind Hayes when I was on my RSV4 and he still gapped me but it took a bit longer than it did this time because I just don’t have the HP. Wouldn’t matter what I was riding though, he’s levels above where I am. Something to work towards though!

Aprilias and their moody quickshifters lol. Biggest headache I’ve had was shift linkage setup. Aside from a putting the new motor in 😂

I’ve heard about them being an issue but this is the first time I experienced it myself. Granted, my RSV4 didn’t have an auto blipper so I dealt with the occasional false neutral before get the shift shaft support installed but the QS never stopped working like this.

good stuff man. you're hauling ass. i did hear something about the shifter is pretty reliant on having the proper shifting angle on the shift rod and linkage. when we put on rearsets and don't get that to the spot where the bike is happy, it might affect the quickshifter. not sure how accurate that is, but something easy to fiddle with on a track day

Thanks! Yeah, the angle of the shift arms is really important. I marked them and put them in the exact spot as before the rearsets but I’m gonna check different angles and see if it makes a difference.

Man I have the same issue with my bike, sometimes im not able to shift up from second to third gear under full throttle acceleration,and when that happens I have to use the clutch lever to get into gear, the auto blooper definitely has issues and it’s not consistent,it comes and goes. Next track day is coming up on the 7th of November,let’s see what happens there… hope Aprilia has a fix for this,im sure im not the only one like you sir, this can cause serious issues on the track!!

For the most part, the up shifting has worked well enough but I installed a Flyhammer sprocket cover which also offer a bit of support to the shift shaft which might make for more positive shifts. The auto blipper not working is a real disappointment because that was a selling point for me. I chatted with the MotoAmerica teams on 660s and none of them are able to use it. Luckily, this is the first bike I’ve owned that had one so I’m not dependent on it. I just turned it off. Assuming you’ll be at Buttonwillow on the 7th, I’ll see you there! 👊🏼✊🏼

Glad you enjoyed the video! Even if that was you in the clip, that wasn’t the one I was pissed about. I was RIGHT behind you when you rolled out of the throttle last second. You almost had a 659cc enema.

Excellent video Robert! The sidecut clips made me laugh 😂 I would definitely recalibrate aPRC before going any further to diagnose the fritzy AQS. When you’re back out at Buttonwillow at the start of the day, go back over by the kart track with the bike in calibration mode (probably 25mph in 2nd gear for a few seconds if it’s like my Tuono) turn it off and wait 60 seconds before turning it back on. When I changed tires on my Tuono RR I used to have, the blipper was super clunky and recalibrating aPRC seemed to help, although the system was still working before, just not super well. Recalibrating is something I do every 1000 miles or so now, although I’m unsure how much of a different it makes. It’s quick and free so may as well give it a shot. Have fun out there!

As always, I appreciate your feedback! What’s funny about the calibration is that I know better. I did it on my RSV4 whenever I changed tire types or brands but there was just so much going on that weekend that I dropped the ball. I’m hoping that’s all it is.

I don’t remember the weights of each item but I know the bodywork and the exhaust were pretty substantial.

@@skwidvids Thank you! I got The Extrema Version and already have the carbon exhaust and carbon parts, lithium battery so, beside the passenger's footpegs, mirrors and some minor stuff, I kind of it a wall in weight reduction.

@@rcrider7343 The extrema still uses the same type of tail section if I’m not mistaken. If that’s the case, removing the luggage platform would save some weight. I think the tail section alone weighs 12lbs.

Hey I’m curious now that it’s been a year or so since you started racing this project rs660, what’s your current thoughts on it? Would you change anything you do to it or did you add anything that’s helped since you made this? Miss seeing your videos!

As far as modifications, I don’t know that I would’ve done anything different. The bike itself is great when it does what it’s supposed to. I’ve been one of the unfortunate ones with several motor recalls and the quick shifter occasionally stops working but when it works, it’s a really fun bike.

That autoblipper issue so insanely annoying. That excuse that aprilia tech gave you sounded like some bs. Why would the TC system even be connected to the autoblipper? It happens regardless if TC is on or off.

This is the first time running them. I tried a couple of other brands and I didn’t have any complaints other than pad life. The WRP gave me the same performance as the other brands but I’m told they won’t wear as quickly which is a big bonus for me.

Question - what is the tire life when racing? Are these as forgiving as the SVs or are you more likely to be replacing tires like you were on a 600?

Funny, I was actually just telling someone about this recently. It went through the rear tire much faster than I expect but that was also a set up issue. Didn’t have the shock dialed in and was using the most aggressive engine map. I find that rear tire wears similarly to a 600 due to the torque. The SV was probably more forgiving because the engine didn’t offer as much torque as the 660. That said, mileage will vary on riding style and set up.

@@matthewbruno5628 I got the 660 to replace my RSV4 for racing because I figured it would be more cost effective but, the difference is negligible at this point. Because the RSV4 torque curve was so smooth, the tire wear was excellent. I raced on one set of tires per race weekend several times so other than the cost difference between the 200 and 180, there isn’t much of a difference so far. To be fair, the RSV4 was more of a street bike that I threw bodywork on. The 660 is pretty much built like the trofeo which would cost significantly more to do on the RSV4.

@@skwidvids Gotcha. Yeah I was in the same boat a few years ago with my R1. Had to practice on used take offs and run one set of tires for the weekend. Seems like unless you race the ultra lightweights, the tire budget is still gonna hurt.
