NOTE: Thanks to Aqara for providing me this early access demo kit!
Asian Smarthome Vendor Aqara is releasing a new line of SmartHome products focused with Apple Homekit support. I was lucky enough to have Aqara send me some gear to look at and I have to say I'm really impressed. Aqara took their requiremnet of having a zigbee based bridge and made it an advantage of their system by building it into a combination nightlight and alarm with multiple sound choices. There are various zigbee based accessories which the Aqara hub supports and we'll be posting additional videos over the next few weeks as we get a chance to work with the Aqara Smart Home system.
If you're interested in making your house a little smarter using Apple Homekit, please check out my udemy course with this discount code:

Great video Chris, what version of the app are you running I have the hub and a couple of the door and window sensors. I’m having issues with the app, l do not have a automation button. I have the four other buttons at the bottom, Home, Accessories, scene and profile but there is no automation button in the middle like on your app. Not having automation button means I can’t change are any of the alarm sounds. I’m stuck with the one or two chirp that sounds like Arming and disarming a car alarm.

Hi Robert! Sorry for any confusion here. This was an earlier version of the app. Aqara changed their app removing the automation functionality short term. If you need this fixed short term they recommend using the Mi Home app. I’ve gotten word from Aqara that there should be an update coming when they launch in Amazon is the US. This burned me as well. Hoping this should be resolved soon. It’s a bit painful but this should work out better for everyone in the long run. The main reason behind the current pain is the confusion between Aqara, Xiaomi, and Mijia. They’ve delayed the release while they work out the compatibility issues.

yup. As long as they is an Apple HomeHub ( AppleTV/HomePod/ iPad in Homehub mode) in the picture. In the background it’s really a triggered automation but it’s super easy to setup. Essentially you create a scene in Homekit with any HomeKit compatible devices in it. This is the target state of all your devices. Then you assign that scene to a button on the switch and you’re good to go. Make sense?

@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ekrem! Appreciate the comment! So the answer is YES! With a bit of a twist. In the current version of the Aqara app ( Nov 2018 ) the automations you create in the app are specific to the Aqara connected accessories. Whether this is Xiaomi/Mijia or Aqara branded accessories doesn’t matter. But... If you flip over to the Apple Home app, or something like Controller or the Eve Systems app, you will see all of the Aqara devices exposed as Homekit objects which you will be able to tie together using scenes and automations with any other Homekit exposed accessory. I’m hoping they clear this up in an upcoming software, but I also get that there are some unique things ( play the siren sound ) on the Aqara gateway that just aren’t exposed to homekit so they do have to do something a little different in their own app. Hopefully this makes sense?

Hey @Charitos - My honest answer is “I don’t know”. I’m guessing that if it has a speaker in it, then you should be able to have multiple of them in your home. But if they are all able to act as a zigbee or bluetooth hub, do they work together or are they all Independant? I would reach out to Aqara for more information. I don’t have that unit and It’s been hard to understand the Aqara design scenarios. I’d rather be honest with you and give you a clear “I don’t know” then try to give you bad information. Good luck with your project! I’d love to hear the results when you get it figured out.

If you have the hub connected to the Aqara or Mi clouds then yes you should be able to arm/disarm remotely. It just depends on being connected to their cloud. If you live in Europe, you will have to connect to the Xiaomi app. My understanding is that Aqara turned their cloud service off in Europe due to GDPR compliance issues.

@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Finder! Thanks for the question. Your English is great! The answer is yes. This is really the power of HomeKit is that you can use it to create scenes which combine accessories from two (or more) different manufactures together and then use another manufacterer to trigger the scene with an automation. For instance I can have lights from Philips Hue and LIFX in a scene with plugs from Connect Sense and Vocolinc that all turn on at the same time. I can the. Use an Aqara motion sensor to trigger/activate the scene when the motion is detected. All of it working together to make your home a little smarter. Hope this makes sense!

Hey @Rasmus. I would let make any assumptions about these devices working with other zigbee bridges. There are some that work with the Deconz component that HomeAssistant uses but I would be very cautious about just spending money without testing first. There are small differences in zigbee implementations that can cause issues. Hope this makes sense!

Question, how many hubs can I add to one home? I have a 4 floors to cover and I don’t think one hub will cover all 4 floors
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
This is a bit of a trick question and requires a bit of understanding of the zigbee protocol. The protocol has the ability to mesh between repeater nodes, which means that a signal is able to bounce through nodes in the network, meaning that a single hub should typically be fine as long as you have the right devices between the hub and the furthest devices away from the hub. Typically, repeater nodes require a little more battery so you’ll typically find this function in lights and plugs. No issue with the extra electrical draw as they are connected directly to the house electricity. I haven’t seen this function in things like temperature/motion/contact sensors as those typically are battery operated and the mesh function would draw too much power. Hopefully this makes sense? Unfortunately, I’m not sure which of the Aqara devices have the repeater function in them. This isnt’ something I’ve been able to find on the datasheets of these products so it would be good to reach out to Aqara support before making an investment.
@DouglasKrug
@DouglasKrug 5 жыл бұрын
@@Homekitgeek Inexpensive and readily available repeaters are either the IKEA Trådfri dedicated Zigbee repeater (which is kind of cool because it can run from AC mains voltages or USB) or the IKEA Trådfri outlet. These are Zigbee 3.0 compliant and work excellent with the Xiaomi Aqara and Mijia products. Many of us Hubitat Elevation hub and SmartThings hub users are utilizing them to give very good stability to the otherwise non-compliant Zigbee implementation that Xiaomi uses.

I was interested in buying the Xiaomi Gateway an then saw that there's also this Aqara gateway. 1- Why would one choose one instead of the other? 2- Are they the same (meaning they are interchangeable)? Maybe they are virtually the same and just produced for different markets (Chinese, US, Europe, ecc, ecc). 3- Are they both made by Xiaomi? I can see that a lot of the sensors that can be connected to the Xiaomi Gateway are named also with the Aqara name (ad example the "Xiaomi WXKG02LM Aqara switch"), this makes me believe that the sensors can work on both gateways? The Xiaomi gateway works also with the Yeelights, I'm not sure if Aqara can do that... It's a little bit confusing.

Oh wow.. I think you nailed the current issues here. I'm actually pretty frustrated as well with the way this is rolling out. From what I can tell, Xiaomi, Mijia, and Aqara are all different companies, but they are somehow related by a parent company. One of the main issues which I did provide them as feedback is that if we look at some of the websites like AliExpress, the brand names are used interchangeably BUT.... they aren't always interoperable. Or at least they weren't. From what I understand the Aqara Homekit hub hasn't been "officially" released outside of China yet, although there are websites which are selling what claims to be the new hub. Bottom line, my recommendation on Nov 13th 2018 is to hold off on buying products unless you're prepared to potentially lose money and be frustrated for a few months. Based on the info I have, Aqara and Xiaomi are working together to sort this out, but this is causing a delay in the release of these products outside of their traditional market. Although it's frustrating, I actually really respect that they are stopping the release to make sure that they get this right for customers. I know this doesn't help to clear up your confusion at all, but the honest answer is "I don't know" :) . Hopefully this will make you feel better knowing that you're not the only one feeling this way.

The cost drives the product cost up substantially and in many cases makes it unprofitable for the device maker. Hi Francis! Thanks for the comments. I’ll try and deal with all three questions here. :). So far the experience has been really good. I haven’t seen any weird disconnects or any other issues. The biggest problem I think Aqara is going to have is with supporting some of the other brands that people THINK are Aqara. (Xiaomi and Mi to name two). This Aqara version hasn’t been released in North America yet but they were kind enough to send me a Pre-release version to get feedback. This is how I got the US plug format. There are some small issues with the app still Aqara is working hard to get those sorted out before the North American release. I've ordered one to play with. Wondered if you have some insight to this comment - community.aqara.com/forum/faq-1/topic/when-will-the-aqara-hub-siren-be-exposed-to-homekit-1479 ? I'm hoping there is a way to trigger the alarm and/or doorbell from HomeKit. I'm able to create virtual switches in HomeKit via Homebridge, so if there's a way one of them could trigger the Alarm or the Doorbell, that would be fantastic. I understand that a Mijia or Aqara button is the official way to trigger the doorbell. This is no problem for me because my current setup uses a conventional doorbell soldered to the connections of an Aqara door/window sensor to trigger notifications, TTS and an MP3 on a Hubtiat Elevation hub. However, I would change this to the conventional button triggering a Mijia button (I have several) that is paired with the Aqara HomeKit Hub if necessary. However, I wouldn't want to lose the TTS and notification options from Hubitat. So I either need the regular button to trigger both the Aqara door/window sensor, and the Mijia button, or I need to have the Aqara HomeKit Hub trigger a virtual switch in HomeKit when the doorbell is activated. Do you know if the hub supports triggering HomeKit switches or lights when the doorbell rings? [Edit] I think you answered my last question in the comments below "you create a scene in Homekit with any HomeKit compatible devices in it. This is the target state of all your devices. Then you assign that scene to a button on the switch and you’re good to go." Sounds like I will need my Mijia button to trigger the doorbell, but that will then be exposed to HomeKit, so I can create a HomeKit automation that triggers a Hubitat virtual switch exposed to HomeKit via Homebridge. That would allow the Xiaomi doorbell to ring and Hubitat TTS and other automations to be activated at the same time. Do you happen to know if the Aqara door/window sensors can be used as doorbell or entry triggers, or is it strictly buttons?
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Douglas! Wow! A lot to unpack here. It seems that you were able to answer your first question so I’ll focus on the second. The door/contact sensors or buttons are, in simple terms, a binary sensor. They have on/off states and you can trigger other scenes based on the state of sensor or button. The one concern I would have about trying to use the contact sensor as a doorbell would be the user experience. Would guest understand what to do with it? The other thing to watch for might be environmental challenges. Depending where you live, the device might need some additional weather proofing. Or if you live in a colder climate like me, you might lose the device when the temperature drops. Hopefully this gives you some things to think about. :)

Hello!! Is it true that Aqara European gateway will accept only sensors and products purchased from Europe? I hear that this is already happened and that means that Xiaomi will lock us on Mainland China server for ever. After Europe the same exactly will happen to US Aqara version in US market. This move is to motivate European entrepreneurs to sell xiaomi products with apathy and not to compete with China's shops. Very sad and really big mistake.
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly - I don’t know the answer to that question. From my limited contact with Aqara, this m not sure that makes sense. The main reason for Aqara delaying release was to make sure that Xiaomi/Mijia and Aqara sensors would all work really well together and be supported in Apple Homekit. It seems strange to delay a release and do all the work and certification process to support Xiaomi and Aqara products and then restrict them. That’s a total guess on my part though. I totally agree it makes sense from a straight market segmentation standpoint. But from an overall customer satisfaction standpoint it will likely just tarnish the brand. As Xiaomi and Aqara start to make the move the rest of the world market, they need to be careful to not create situations where customers buy products that are official products in official boxes and they don’t work together. There’s enough confusion on sites like Aliexpress where accessories are listed as Aqara/Xiaomi/Mijia already. Adding more confusion and interoperability issues will just add to the problem.

It is good for nothing more than to play for a while and waste time. It works once and twice not. The problem is in the APP and the Xiaomi server in China. Every bit stops recognizing the devices. What I was most interested in is that he warned me on the phone when I'm away from home and it fails a lot. I would say 50% of the time. I tried to return it, but I could not because they ask me for a proof that it does not work and since it is China's server that fails, I can not prove it. Therefore I have to eat it. Fortunately, the investment is not much, but it is not a serious alarm, it is rather a scam.

Hey Montessa, I've been struggling with this hub since I first got a preview of it. It's still unclear to me which app I should be using, the Xiaomi "Mi" app of the Aqara app? It's a decent zigbee hub and there are a a lot fo accessories available, including the vibration sensor which is the only homekit compatible vibration sensor on the market that I'm aware of, so it's still not a horrible buy, but I do agree with you that this is probably not my first ( or even second!) choice for an alarm function. The fact that you need to be logged into one of the clouds makes it a bit problematic. Which cloud Aqara or Xiaomi? And once we figure out which cloud, which region? China? Europe? Us? etc... Just a lot of unanswered questions. I'm still really hoping that Aqara sorts this mess out and it does seem to be going in the right direction, but it's tough for me to recommend this platform to "normal" people right now. If you're interested in being on the bleeding edge and discovering new things about a product all the time, this is a great choice, but if you just want to be notified when something happens at home, there are probably better platforms like the Abode security gateway that you might want to look at. Really sorry about your bad experience.
