The main aquaponics input is the fish food. The problem of fish pellet is that it is costly and not very sustainable. The ideal is to produce part of this fish food by ourselves and this is what we will see in this video. Duckweed is a floating aquatic plant that grows extremely quickly when stocked in good conditions. The aquaponics water is a perfect environment for it. You wonder “Do all fish eat Duckweed?”, the response is “no” but I would recommend anyone growing vegetarian or omnivorous fish such as tilapia, silverperch, jade perch, carp, gold fish, catfish… to grow some Duckweeds to feed the fish. Some aquaponics dry the Duckweed to keep them all year long but it’s much better to use them fresh when they are still very high in vitamins.

Living in the tropics and a place where it is impossible to buy good quality fish food, mosquitoe larvae are plentiful so a great source of protein for my tilapia. I use an empty grow bed with a bell siphon which is slow drip filled to provide the mosquitoes enough stagnant water to lay their eggs. A few days later this simple setup is filled with thousands of mosquitoe larvae. I then increase the water flow to trigger the bell siphon and they all get flushed into my fish tank. I also have a small solar light installed just above the fish tank which attracts insects at night. For greens I use fresh Moringa leaves and wild long coriander.

I thought about this method being used on a large scale to control Zika virus - basically running cisterns on timers to flush regularly to feed fish and removing all other breeding sites. Well done - now share your designs.

I keep several aquariums, and grow, forage or catch as much food for my aquatic friends, as possible. Besides the fact that I feel more comfortable about the ingredients, and minimizing unnecessary consumption, it is the only way that I can afford to be in the hobby. My number one suggestion would be to encourage green algae growth. It is an excellent source of nutrition for the critters, and rather effective nitrate scrubber. How much it would compete with your plants, would be a consideration though.

Merci Jonathan! Really helpful. I am looking on setting up an aquaponics set up in Germany where there isnt as much natural light as in Australia. Do you have any tips for these environments?

If I put duckweed in one aquaponic bed of a multi-bed system, will a simple screen on the water output keep the duckweed from spreading to the other beds ??

Helo Daniel! Yes definitely, see I even designed some indoor aquaponics: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ruCWeNaHvLa0fp8.html Only thing is to watch out for power consumption. We want the system to remain sustainable 😉 How are your local gardeners producing? do they use lights? Cheers

Hi I like your video, keep up the good work. I strongly recommend that you avoid gambusia as the fish of choice for low oxygen. While they are known as mosquito fish they are not that effective at eating the larvae (they are very effective at eating other fish eggs though) and if they somehow manage to get into the natural watershed, through leaks or during heavy rain events etc. they cause a great deal of damage to native fish population.

Thanks Rich, excellent point, we must NEVER release those fish in any natural dam/river/lake... Rich would you recommend goldfish to regulate mosquito population or any other species? Thanks

@@AquaponicsRevolution Not too sure. I do know that mosquitoes like to lay eggs in shallow still water, so if there is a way to break the surface tension of the water with a small trickle.or keep the duckweed in a half metre deep tank, mosquitoes are less likely to breed there. Hope that helps.

I'm in the design planning stage at the moment. we live in an apartment and are considering an indoor setup with tilapia, prawn, grow medium/bell syphon and probably duckweed as a supplement food source. Is there a chance duckweed can be cultivated on the surface of the aquarium with a bird net separating it from the fish as a opposed to using a separate sump tank to cultivate?

I think goldfish are high oxygen consumption fish. You should put betta fish instead. It's a labyrinth fish and can breath into straight air in water surface
@AquaponicsRevolution
@AquaponicsRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Wisnu, yes betta are very well adapted to low oxygen concentration. The fish I am referring to into this video is actually Gambusia also called Miskito fish. It's also really well adapted to low oxygen concentration. This is perfect for any "dead water" where you want to grow duck weed for your fish. Cheers

Do marron like to eat the duck weed, as I have a large pond with marron living quite happily, but pellets do make the water dirty. So hope this greenery feeds them too.
