In this video we discuss the proper flow rates for keeping corals on the Budget Reef level. This means that your corals will stay happier and healthier longer and your aquarium will stay cleaner, providing a healthier environment for your inhabitants. Water movement is one key thing that makes a reef tank different then a fish only system.

Do I NEED waves? (Pulse) or more than one powerhead with crashing currents will do the trick? I'm aiming for softies, perhaps easy going lps.

I notice that you did not include the gph from the return pump. I have a DC return pump. Do you include that too to find out turnover ?

So I have a 25gal tank with 1 pump but that pump has 2 outlets pumping from a reservoir. So do I count that as 2 or 1? Thanks in advance.

Do you need flow in a tank with just live rock and clown fish. I have a 10 gallon tank to start off.

What ppm do you need for saltwater I got told that I need 0 ppm but where I live I deal with alot of Calcium in the water so I buy my water at refilled stations and it comes out as 7 ppm is that ok for my tank ???

I have seen plenty of KZfaq reefers use Larger HOB filters to provide 100% of the flow. I am not suggesting powerheads are not worth it, they are not that expensive, but necessary? Maybe not.

Hi Mark! I just watched your video again on flow and why it matters. I have a 32 gallon biocube. I bought a second 425 gph koralia powerhead. I am thinking of placing both of them on the back wall so the current will go around the curved glass to the front and crash into each other. Do you think that would be good enough? Where would you place them? I will have 26.5x flow rate.

Great video Mark! I have a 32 gallon coralife biocube. I am running one Hydor Koralia 425 powerhead on the right side of the tank, almost in the middle. In the left back corner I have a lot of red algae. I'm not sure if it is cyano bacteria or not. Should I increase my flow, and how would I go about doing that?

That can be a sign of a low flow area. You way want to consider adding more flow.

I also have a 32g biocube. I used to have a Icecap 1k but the corals do not like the laminar flow. There were red algae that were caused by deadspots. Then I switched to 2 Tunze 6040 at opposite end of the tank. These have strong wide and opposite flows so the corals seem to like the turbulence. And the clowns don't go crazy like when I had the icecap 1k. Most importantly, the red algae are gone. It could be several factors together that contribute to this. I use Seachem Phosguard, SeaChem Purigen and BRS ROX 0.8 carbon which lowers phosphate to 0.03. Added Seachem Matrix so nitrates is stable at 5-10ppm.
