In this video I show you guys how to make a nice pretty and easy to keep planted aquarium with NO HARDSCAPE!!! Lot's of you don't have the cash to jump straight in with the full aquatic plants, woods, rocks and fish, so hopefully this setup can temp you into get a tank, some gravel, soil from your garden and a few plants. Important note, if you don't have a cycled sponge for your filter like I had, either cycle the tank (a quick google will tell you how to do this) or change the water everyday and replace with dechlorinated tap water at the correct temperature. You will need to do this for at least 2 weeks and I'd strongly suggest adding beneficial bacteria as well. I use API Quick Start.

I would really love to see a Q & A program. Seems like I always have a question. This video makes me wonder. Could you purchase bagged top soil to use? My reason being my yard has been treated many times for fleas and other insects. Yeah having a flea problem with our dog, however all the treatments inside, outside and on him still haven't helped. But now there is no way I would use any of the top soil from my yard in my set ups.

A tip for those who can't afford to buy pieces of driftwood and rocks, I collected all my wood and rocks from the beach and I nicked some gravel from my neighbours driveway as a substrate.
@PaulZyCZ
@PaulZyCZ 2 жыл бұрын
You can use all kinds of rocks provided they won't release Calcium or worse things like Sulphur. First can be tested with acid (vinegar, lemon). It can be stuff like coconut shells, planting pots... and it's similar with wood. For example willow, vine, alder are all good to use, they just float. On the other hand Walnut wood is said to be mildly toxic to fish.

I never boiled the rocks I foraged I just give them a good scrub under the hot tap. Not had any issues, the rocks were being cooked by the sun all summer also so not likely to have anything nasty on it. Just don't take your rocks and wood from some jank swamp or somewhere dirty. A beach in the middle of summer when the rocks are being cooked all day is perfect for finding safe to use decor, as others suggested you should acid test the rocks incase they contain tons of calcium which will raise your pH

Believe it or not, your first betta Aquascape video with Mike inspired me to do a nano live set up. 6 gallon cube, dark pea gravel, some pearl weed, water sprite, anubias, dwarf hair grass, Java fern, manzanita and spider wood. Some jasper stones for stacking the wood on. A cheap sponge filter. A 30$ hygger light. Some red root floaters and salvinia minima to top off the surface. Black construction paper to give a matte black background. And last but surely not least, 1 really happy red koi plakat betta female.

Actually where I'm from (western australia) a lot of places do deals on common stems and carpeting plants (sometimes also java fern) like 4 for $20- 25, 3 for $20, etc depending on varieties. So 3 or 4 varieties is pretty decent for a starting set up 😜. You might not start out with the number of stems of each variety as MD does but even under cheap lights they grow really quickly so its really easy to trim and replant, and in 2 months you have a nice lush scape 😊 thats how mine started! And then when you have a bit of spare cash, you can treat yourself to a new variety which makes the tank evolve more as time goes on

@@tanja-k sadly not all plants are that cheap and it does depend where you go 😂 but if you arent worried about getting specific species or recognising what plants are what species since they are unnamed, its a great way to start off. Anubias, crypts and the like are still very expensive and so are certain stem plants (often the reddish ones), but Limnophila is always dirt cheap, so are a lot of other very quick growing stems 😊

I really do like the discuss tank! The greenery of the pants and the wonderful scape, the discuss tank is really my favorite of all your tanks. But sadly one of the discuss passed away :((

I know this is older but what fish are in the no filter vase? With the layers of soil? I got a 2:5 gallon I’m planting and would like a few tiny fish and shrimp.

what did you use when draining the tank before you moved it? Shop Vacuum? Love your videos keep coming out with them.

Will you keep that light on for 24hrs? Also are you using any dimmer/light control to adjust the light intensity?

Love the content MD, I've always just wondered what kind of maintenance you do on your tanks in terms of cleaning the substrate. Do you spot clean the surface of the gavel or do you ever use a vacuum? I assume you cant use a vacuum on a build like this. If anyone else knows I'd appreciate the info.

If I had to guess I’d say. Proper feeding to avoid excess waste. Plants and lighting to make plants beat out algae. And if not proper clean up crew.

Where did you get the thing that keeps the water hose in the tank while filling? I don't know what's it called.

Hey MD I am thinking of doing a fish room with a lot of nano tanks and was wondering how you have the electrical system set up.

Would also love to know about the electrical setup. Have four nano tanks and am going to change the setup into aquarium holding racks but that will bunch all the electrics to one or two power point locations. Would there be a safe way to do so without overwhelming fuses or messing up the aquarium electrics? Really glad to know I'm not the only one confused about how so many tanks are kept in one room/one area ^^'

Hey MD, I was just wandering if you are planning to create a setup for Goby fishes in future !! There is not a lot of videos or content available on KZfaq featuring these cute fishes (Stiphodon, bumble bee). It would be great to see a setup featuring something similar to there habitat and all and also it would be a great addition to your studio.

Beautiful!!! Where did you get that device that pumps in the water? I’m newer to the hobby and that looked way easier than me dumping in water with a bucket.

I've just read this man I know it's late lol but if you raise the bucket above the tank on a board or something similar and then use the gravel vac going from the bucket to the tank it works just as well and you don't have to f*** about with buckets
