In this video I am stripping things back and creating a Diana Walstad inspired aquarium in a vase. The mini planted tanks do not require a filter as the plants do the working of not only pulling nasties from the water column, but also providing oxygen for the fish. Fascinating little setups and fully recommend you give it a try.

Gotta say bud your page got me hooked on doing fish tanks again. I've always wanted to build a natural tank and I recently got my hands on 3 for free. One is a 10, a 2, and a 55 gallon. I got them running last week and the knowledge I've learned and ideas from your page is priceless. Thanks for getting me into the hobby bro.

i love this as a little desk build, but I do agree with others, not so sure about the fish. That said, I know you'll keep a good eye on them, and the parameters, and make sure they're moved when they need to be. My main worry is people following your initial example then getting lazy LOL Love the scape as usual though, and it's given me a fun idea for if i need to take my sparkling gourami fry out of the sparkler tank!

I must admit I was disappointed 😞. I watch a you tubevideo or two while I’m getting the household ready in the mornings. MD fish tanks is my fav and first go to. I looked at this video and I was 😞, I though, no just a little vase! I’ve been looking forwards to a good long MD video for days. I set the kettle on ( I’m in Australia so you’re always posting very late here) and started on breakfast, popping on the video ( had to rewinding twice cos I wasn’t interested and was distracted,) but hey I’m an ikea fan, so that caught my attention. I love the glassware for terrariums. Wow what an unexpectedly beautiful little video. Something about your enthusiasm, the general funny and sometimes deprecating humour, the beauty of your fish and flora, not to mention really elegant simple additions like the half moon base, just make this a really nice video to watch. Not to mention the absolutely fabulous camera work and editing. We’d love to know your secrets there! I burnt everyones breakfast by the way as I was so engrossed 😝! cornflakes it is for my tribe ( won’t be happy as it’s winter here ) but you videos are sometimes just like a sleeper car ( not a car person but you get the drift ) this video was a such a great surprise Thank you 😊 ( yet again 🙏)

I have just discovered this channel. Love it. So easy to watch. I have a kept a zebra danio in a 2 pint vase before. Just had gravel that I took from one of my existing tanks. No plants. I was pretty lax with water changes, but maybe did a 50% every two weeks or so with tap water that I left out over night. Zebby lived for 3 years. Anyway, as a result of seeing this, I think I’ll get a bigger vase and do something vey similar. Thanks!

Oh my god seeing this pop up in my feed was such a strange feeling. I was just watching your walstad / no filter bowl video with the UG, and you mentioned having to keep on top of trimming and I started thinking "What if I used a vase". I made wood stand, bought a vase, clip on lamp, and the plants are being shipped.. Parallel thinking is so cool :)

Hey MD, I really like your videos and watch most of them, but never feel the urge to comment as, well, I just don't like most comment sections on the internet. But for this video, I really have to write a comment and give you some criticism for it. While your scape is fine and all, I think it is a mistake to put fish in such a small tank, even if they are really small or still fry. You MAYBE could argue, that very young fish would be completely fine in there for some weeks, until you move them, but please keep some things in mind. First - even if you COULD do something, doesn't mean you should do it all the time. A tank like this would be (at most) the bare minimun for those fish and while I totally undestand that one can keep fish without going all in on animal wellfare, it should still be our focus as pet owners to offer those animals we keep the best possible environment. Second, and I guess this is way more important - like I said above, it might be ok to let some fry grow out in such a tank for some time and move them. If that is the case, that would be totally fine for everyone to do at home. BUT. You are a really big and influancial KZfaqr with a huge community. And as such, many people will take you as an example or even an excuse to do something. And while active followers, who watch videos till the end and listen closely to what you say will most of the time get all the "ifs" and "whens" you talk about, there are even more, who just consume some content here and there. And those people will get a completely wrong idea of how you can keep fish at home, if some KZfaqr with a community this big does it in such way. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to accuse you of anything here, after all I really like most of your content. But please think about the consequences it could have, if those examples are seen by people who don't see "the whole picture" or maybe are just kids who don't fully understand everything you say about keeping fish in such a small tank.

I personally have something like this set up to keep extra snails and to quarantine new plants. I have bladder snails, which I want to keep in my tank because they don't eat live plants, only algae and dead plant matter. There is also a species of small, flat spiral snails that I havent identified yet, but I have noticed chunks of plants missing like a snail ate them, so I'm trying to take out that second species to see if that is the culprit. I have no other tank to put them in so I set up a large glass jar with dirt and a gravel cap to grow out plant cuttings, quarantine new plants, and hold my extra snails. No fish is ever going in there, and the snails shouldnt over reproduce due to low levels of food source, and I can keep the water quality very hard and high in calcium to make it the best home for snails. My actual tank has 2 guppies and moneywort so far, definitely a work in progress, and I'm adding duckweed soon. Please dont put fish in a jar as a home, it is simply not big enough.

It's funny b/c I just fixed up the planted vase thing I had today too! I actually made a platform for a few terrestrial plants to set on. I think they're begonias...but there are a couple pieces of asparagus fern and some moss, and some tiny ficus plumeria from some trees in my neighborhood. Inside the vase is the piece of wood that has had some anubias nana on it for ages and some rocks. You adding the floaters to yours made me realize how good mine would look with some too so I stole a few from my betta haha It's so cute and I love it. Oh and I put a couple tiny toy dart frogs I saw today in my LFS and it's perfect :) I'm not adding any fish to it tho...too small. I might put a couple snails to pal around in there.

I NEED to try my hand on creating this, it's just the most beautiful little tank I've seen, you did an amazing job! I would love to keep fish in one, so I know you mentioned some fish can work for this kind of shaped tank, but you never said which ones. Would you mind mentioning a few? Also, you mentioned you built a wooden tank stand and wondered if you had a video of you making it? I really want to build my own stand for a 29 gallon tank but I'm worried I wont be able to make them sturdy enough to hold that much weight. I'm making it very difficult for myself considering I also want it to look nice and work as a media unit haha. I've just started to tumble down into the aquarium world and I haven't yet bought an aquarium BUT I'm already so deep into this new hobby watching a lot of youtube videos for info and guidance and I have to say your channel quickly became one of my favourites! Hi! I love your channel. I’m brand new to the hobby (October 2022… found a 3-4 gallon sump type rimless cube aquarium on a curb… I recently added a ten gallon making my cube my nursery for my Endlers and the moms- by the ay I ripped out the back dump filter. I got tired of fishing babies and mom out it floss and filters.. looks amazing and I have better square footage ) You and your builds are a great source of inspiration to me !❤ I’m using a vase similar to that ikea vase but a bit taller as my temporary nursery. I didn’t understand what cycling was and I didn’t do it correctly and now I’m having ammonia spikes in both tanks 😫 anyhow. What about air stones? I worry they are suffocating without one..? Thank you again!!

I feel like it’s a tad bright when there’s very little refuge to get into the shade, especially for shrimp but also the guppies

I've heard that if you put in a tablespoon of baking soda for every 5 gallons that it will neutralize the acid. I have live plans in my tank I've always had life plans and I've got hardscape and the gravel that I have it's non-toxic when I put it into the water it didn't even fizz up like it did when I had some other type of brand

Could I let shrimp and snails in there for a longer time? No fish, just shrimp and snails. Could I? Because I am thinking about using the vase my mother bought once but isn't using anymore.. :)
