This a beginner's tutorial, that will help you with three important subjects. The first and biggest subject is aquarium CO2. Carbon-dioxide is much needed by aquarium plants for photosynthesis, all high-tech planted tanks have some form of CO2 injection, using a CO2 diffuser of CO2 reactor. The second topic is the aquarium plant fertilizing. We also talk about the water parameters, water hardness as well as water temperature in a planted tank. Stay tuned!
This tutorial delves into three crucial aspects of successful aquascaping: CO2 injection, plant fertilization, and water parameters. Whether you're a beginner or looking to fine-tune your skills, this video has something for everyone.
CO2 Injection Demystified: Learn about the importance of CO2 for plant photosynthesis and the essentials of setting up a CO2 system. From canisters to solenoid valves, we cover it all.
Fertilizing for Lush Growth: Discover the world of aquarium plant fertilization. We explain macro and micronutrients the role of iron, and showcase the best fertilizers to use for optimal plant health.
Perfecting Water Parameters: Dive into the world of water hardness, temperature, and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). We provide insights into maintaining ideal parameters for your planted tank.

GREEN AQUA CO2 SYSTEM SPECS
- CO2 injection is switched on at 7AM. Lights are on from 9.30, so 2.5 hours after the CO2 comes on. CO2 on for 10 hours, it switches off together with the lights, at 5PM.
- All aquariums have around 30 ppm CO2 levels, with the drop checkers lime green.
- We use CO2 diffusers (ADA and Aquario) for the small tanks and external CO2 reactors (Aqua Medic, AquaCare and DIY) for the big tanks.
- We have 2kg and 5 kg (and one 20kg) bottles below the tanks, and monitor CO2 levels on a daily basis.
GREEN AQUA WATER PARAMETERS
- We use Reverse Osmosis (RO) water, as the Hungarian tap water is really hard. (Around GH 24). Remineralize it with Green Aqua Mineral GH Plus to raise the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids value) to 120 (corresponds to GH 3). Our real values are between TDS 110-160 at times.
- Other water parameters: pH 6.5-6.8, KH 1
- Water temperature is between 22-24, in the summer it goes to a maximum of 26 occasionally (we're not happy about that).
GREEN AQUA FERTILIZING
- Green Aqua Macro and Micro, Seachem Excel or ADA Green Brighty Mineral and ADA Brighty K and Seachem Excel dosing regime in all tanks. We occasionally use ADA Iron in tank, and Seachem Phosphorus in case of Green Spot Algae.

I know this was done about a year ago but so much good information. I also watched the master class and it was great. I'm new to planted tanks and aquascaping. I am actually doing my first real planted tank in a 215 gallon tank. I wish I'd found your videos before I started. I haven't made all the novice mistakes but I've made a few. However, we are happy with it so that's really what counts. I'm so anxious for the plants to start growing in and filling out the tank more. Looking forward to more of your vidoes.

Good info but, honestly, i was expecting a bit more. If the video is meant for beginners you could have explained what products do you use on the exposition tanks, the mL, the frequency and why did you chose the ones you use. I know you guys use mainly ADA mineral and brighty K + excel daily but you havent explain where is the N and P coming from. Just fish waste (N) and fish food (P) in addition to the soil nutrition?.... and how much should one use per L and how to adjust it. what parameters to look for, for example what leads you to decide that extra iron is needed..... When you supplement iron or, for example, phosphates (to fight Green spot), how much are you adding per L, how often and for how long... the answer to these questions were the kind of info i was expecting... On a more advance level, what do you guys fell about PPS-pro and EI, etc... why you dont like those systems and prefer to use what you use. You could have explained why you limit N in the tank (to get the best red colours out plants? and limit growth and, therefore, tank maintenance?). Also, by not supplementing extra N, how do you reach the 20/30ppm you were mentioning, since all tanks have different plant mass and fish stock and will produce/consume different levels of N. How do you keep it steady at that level... maybe these questions would grant a part 2 video on this topic..😉Anyway, great video as always.

Why should we add nitrates when nitrates are already building up in the aquarium? Thanks.
@ThePlantedTankTV
@ThePlantedTankTV 4 жыл бұрын
If you are doing a 50% water change every week without dosing, your nitrates will possibly hit 0ppm. Which is bad for plants. Your plants are always absorbing nitrates and if you don't replenish them. Your plants will suffer. The 50% water change is meant to keep those nitrates from getting to high. ✌🙂🙏
@GreenAquaShop
@GreenAquaShop 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, thanks for your help and answering the question. I would also add that ADA ferts do not have any nitrates of phosphates so the ones that you get from the tank itself will be enough with that dosing regime - between the two mandatory water changes.

Thanks Balazs ! Your insight is greatly appreciated. It was interesting to see a different view on testing and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). My biochemistry and molecular biology roots may have led me astray as I was counseled to do, watch, and record the numbers religiously. in addition, TDS said to be only for "trends" as it was a "combined value." There are constraints in associating with "techies" with aquariums. :) Your articulate and concise vlog put the topic in perspective. The reactor is always the best solution if you have a big tank and a strong filter underneath that can afford loosing some flow due to hooking that stuff onto the pressure side... You have 100% dissolve rate (save CO2), you have no bubbles visible in the tank to obstruct the view, and you have no tech in the tank.

My nitrates level is, as expected, 0 in my tank. Sometimes my plants look not as red/green as they should be, and I wonder if this nitrate issue couldn't be the source of the problem... Thanks!

Hi Balasz , thank you very much for the very informative video it was very insightful and helped to answer a lot of questions i had. I do have a few more points i would like your assistance in getting clarity on. Is it advisable to have two periods in the day where your CO2 and lights are on e.g. 2 hours in the morning and +/- 6hours in the afternoon/evening , or would it be more advisable to have the light and c02 on for one continues period. I ask as i had a concern around C02 fluctuations. Secondly what is the ideal TDS range that a cycled and established tank should be at to be considered within a good range.

Another excellent video. Very helpful information and visuals. Wish there was a shops like yours in the U.S. Petco and Petsmart stores should not be selling 🐠 🐟 and other animals. The company and its staff seriously lack the knowledge and training needed as seen in your professional business staff and KZfaq videos. Visited both stores over the weekend (Petco and Petsmart) and saw dead fish at the bottom of tanks or stuck to filters and the lights in the tanks were either broken or turned off. Plants 🌱 being sold in separate tanks were deteriorating, yellow or brown. When I ask staff questions about the fish or aquarium care products, the response is usually, “The guy who takes care of the fish and other animals is off today.” 😳 Thank you for sharing your videos with passionate aquarium hobbyist. Looking 👀 forward to seeing your next video.
