Another cracking video - we passed under that viaduct a few years ago, but I didn't know that at the time. The insect life was fantastic.

You make some very interesting points about the social, economic and ecological benefits of canals and their restoration, which I agree with. However, as you intimated, there is little evidence that Westminster has got the message, especially with the massive cut in funding for CRT. Some big challenges restoring that section, but luckily they have an aqueduct across that motorway.

That’s why it’s so important to get on CRT and fund Britains waterways and show support. It’s nearly election time and hot topics will become priority

All those weedy patches where the cabbage moths were breeding look like ideal habitat for Tiger Snakes from our temperate areas. Perhaps we can donate some to ensure that those areas remain "wild!" 😉😁

Another great vid. Agree with a lot of your thoughts/views here Steve. We've all got to do our bit; try and persuade more MP's to support and keep our waterways a priority that requires (proper) public funds for upkeep/expansion. They're not some luxury that will sustain themselves, as the current Govt (given proposed funding cuts) wrongly believes. They're a major public/cultural asset that benefits all. Honestly, I struggle to find ANY downsides, ANY harm they bring,...

It baffles me Brings money into the economy ✅ Short return on investment ✅ Provides diverse habitat ✅ Provides a nature corridor into towns and cities ✅ Provides a place for residential moorings ✅ Provides holiday opportunities in the Uk ✅ Great for mental health and well-being ✅ Brings in tax revenue from all the business it supports ✅ Doesn’t make MPs Rich……. There we go!

Good program. The Wey and Arun could benefit from your treatment. It may be a weak analogy but restoring most canals that show potential risks a repeat of what the heritage railway movement is threatened by, the law of diminishing returns. Over-dependance on grants from taxpayers' funds can end in tears.

The wet and Arun is on my list. It’s not restored with taxpayer funds it’s all grants from things like heritage lottery and probate companies/donations

Seine-Nord Europe Canal is one of the biggest projects in Europe which demonstrates what can be done if you want the government to take a interest in canals you will need to stop the CRT from making themselves irrelevant to commercial traffic / UK trade.
@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut Жыл бұрын
There are ship canals in the UK but they are commercially ran. Whilst the narrow canal network could take some goods it wouldn’t be cost efficient. The rail network is the key to removing goods from the roads

According to "environmentalist" any change is regarded as "destruction of nature". Which is just a dramatic subjective opinion by lunatics in order to draw attention. This forward thinking of building the aqueduct is very special. Hopefully it will get finished.

Short term minor destruction which creates miles of blue and green environment, those saying that having got a clue what they are talking about. Years ago trusts would just rip though and cut it all down but now everything is done with the environment in mind

And trees are the new religion. Self sown trees thrive on abandoned canals and railway tracks much to the delight of the 'ecology is all' lobby ( aided by the Env. Agency) and the frustration of industrial archeologists, navigators and steam buffs.@@CourtAboveTheCut

I agree with you totally, it's a no brainer for us to see the benefits to economy, peoples lives, health and wellbeing, but it doesn't benefit government as the companies employed by government wouldn't make the money there making on HS2.....

@@CourtAboveTheCut I agree, I think there needs to be a massive step change into the thinking of how, why & what we do as a country & how our elected MP's do there jobs to aid & benefit the population. Unfortunately a small minority gain the most. I am not looking at the UK becoming a socialist state, but a better, fairer way that we all see the benefits from our hard work & taxation. A fairer economy for all, a better environment for all, better mental health and wellbeing for all.
