Wow, Mark will use every possible opportunity to pull out his Johnson and play with it on video. 😸😸😸 On a serious note, I've just learned that the AR-10 and AR-15 borrowed the lockup system from the Johnson. I didn't even know that Johnson worked with Stoner. That's really cool. I'm really happy you 2 made this video; tons of valuable info taught throughout!

I rebuilt and Cerakoted a couple of burnt Smith and Wesson ar 15's came out nice. Solid shooters now. Loved the episode!

Very interesting. There's also a discussion out there about the AK47 and people thinking it was designed after the STG44. When in fact the AK was probably closer to an M1 Garand.

I said this on FB, you two are my top two channels. Thank you both for all the knowledge. Have been fascinated with guns since I was 6 years old. After nearly 40 years, I realize I've only scratched the surface!

The Johnson wasn't a backup plan, it was the main idea. Garand's M1 that we know today was the dark horse that was so great it won. Melvin wasn't even in the US when this happened, he was in Britain because he thought the US adoption was guaranteed.

The "papier mache" comment was an apt description of the Johnson / Stoner (and MG34, MG42, etc.) innovation of localizing load-bearing receiver functions to an inch or two of barrel extension. It doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves; IMNSHO it's a "check valve" in the history of technology, an inflection point beyond which it's objectively stupid and wrong to ever do it the old way again (at least since patent(s) expired). It finally, belatedly brought headspace up to the 1840s standard of parts interchangeability (which ironically originated in firearms manufacture), making barrel exchanges intuitive for laymen - even more so in firearms with no gas tube to work around. It also makes the rest of the "receiver" a mere alignment jig for barrel, BCG, FCG, and optics, allowing lighter / cheaper / easier to machine materials with zero loss of function. Why haven't more manufacturers grasped the obvious?

There are a range of temperatures at which various types and configurations of paper will ignite and/or burn. 451 °F is just a ballpark number that Bradbury chose because it sounded good. 😅

This reminds me of a gunsmith in Moline,IL Fred Miller. He took a Colt Single Action Army that had been in a fire. Took it apart, reheat treated it, refinished it, and put it back together. The best gunsmith that I ever personally knew. He would build Stevens 44 1/2 totally in house. Wish I could have bought one.

For a minute there I thought that Johnson there had a seriously broken receiver, but it was only a shadow giving the effect of the broken receiver.

My understanding is Melvin Johnson got the idea for the multiple lug bolt from George Fosberry. I'm not sure if Fosberry came up with the original design or if he borrowed it from somebody else.

Ok it's his rifle. I was wondering why all the trouble to have a gunsmith rebuild an AR upper and lower? Cheap enough to replace the whole gun than have gunsmith fix it.
