If there's a male figure we men should try and "base" our lifes upon is Aragorn persona. Hell or even improving ourselves as human beings, the character "Aragorn" is based almost of only good qualities that we as humans should learn from. The Wisdom, Bravery, Selflessness, Perseverance and Humility. If i were ever to become a father, i wish my son or daughter could see as a "Aragorn figure", the same way i try to live my life based upon "his" qualities.

When Boromir calls Aragorn "my King" the look on Aragorn's face is interesting, he seems almost stung a bit as if he's realizing that he must take on the role now whether he likes it or not, even if for no other reason than to make Boromir's faith in him worth it.

Theres a reason that so many women fell in love with Aragorn, he represents everything that positive masculinity is. He's wise and an expert in his field but also incredibly humble, he's a leader but he recognises that to lead means not to dominate but to serve. Hes strong and yet also gentle, he cry's when he experiences loss but is determined in the face of danger. Tolkien really wrote some truly beautiful men, Faramir being another, a quote of his that comes to mind was "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

That dialogue between Eowyn and Aragorn showed how much Tolkien understood about female ambition and conflicts with gender roles. Tolkien claimed he was not good at writing women, hence there are very few women in his stories. Yet the few women characters he wrote are treated with respect and as a whole person. From Luthien Tinuviel to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. They played key roles, no matter how small their 'number of words', and isn't there for token representation.

Another interesting thing is Aragorn never condemns Boromir for his short comings, because Aragorn can understand what happened and how it happened, he expresses empathy and understanding towards Boromir. Even when Boromir asks for forgiveness, instead he tries to comfort him, not just with his words but physically, to put him at ease in what must be a terrifying moment for Boromir as his life comes to an end. It's also interesting that when Aragorn takes on the Uruk-hai, is he even attempting to survive? or is he literally just trying to buy as many seconds as possible to increase Frodo's chances of getting further away, he was ready to lay his life down right then and there for the safety of another person who needed to be protected. One thing i noticed whilst watching this video, is Aragorn never once puts anyone down, he even shows compassion towards Wormtongue, he is a constant source of encouragement to everyone around him to push them to do better for themselves and others, even with the speech at the black gate, he is the first to admit that he is just as scared as the average soldier, yet he's not going to back down, he doesn't put on some bravado, instead he once again encourages people to overcome their fear, and to persevere Sam is also another great example of a masculine role model, he is supportive, he knows his role, and he intends to carry it out, whilst also being compassionate, courageous and skilled

One of the reasons I love Aragorn's interaction with Frodo is that it shows he is wise enough to know when someone else is better suited to a task. I guess some of what you point out about Aragorn is why I'm such a sucker for war movies and tv shows, especially those made after 1990. Any war movie that Mel Gibson is involved with is top tier precisely for these reasons. Mel Gibson always played a man who wanted to fight for his country and/or protect his family while also being unafraid to show emotions--I dare you to try not to tear up a little at his portrayal of a father who became a widower and cares greatly for his children in The Patriot or a man with a family who is also the commander of troops being sent to Vietnam in We Were Soldiers. Hacksaw Ridge (directed by Gibson) and the HBO tv show Band of Brothers (Gibson not involved) are also awesome examples of how to show how horrible war is and how men fighting in wars are affected by it physically and emotionally. Band of Brothers especially never shies away from the emotion--again, I dare you to try to not cry real tears during the episode "Why We Fight" when Liebgott breaks down after having to translate to a group of concentration camp survivors the bad news that they can't leave the camp right way and have to spend another night there. I am also a big fan of the Marvel MCU movies. I know a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and calling all the new stuff a bunch of crap (and to be fair one show in particular, She-Hulk, definitely makes my list of craptastic stuff), but I've always liked how the movies portray the male heroes as being more than just macho and stoic loners but are actually people who can feel love, grief, friendship, and the desire to help people, especially Thor, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and Hawkeye, and they aren't afraid to show those emotions. I think some directors I could name (one of those whose initials are M.S.) who have probably never watched a good superhero movie like Iron Man or Captain America in their lives need to get off their high horses about superhero movies not "portraying the human condition" and emotions and actually pay attention to what is actually portrayed in those movies.

The only character that I see today that resembles Aragorn is Steve from Stranger Things. He is also the protector and he does whatever he can to help the others. He is not the main character and doesn’t try to be, but stands for the group and puts himself on the duty to do all he can for the group. He even started the last part of the first season making up for his mistakes. Such a good example of masculinity and yet many people don’t even noticed his value and there’s so little character like him. It’s like people are trained to only admire the wrong traits.

I'm inclined to say Boromir kind of shows how toxic masculinity really hurts good men who are burdened by its expectations. He and Faramir are both strong, good men in their own ways, but their father lionizes Boromir's strengths and totally rejects Faramir as being "weak," and in so doing not only does he overlook Faramir's strengths, but he also ends up expecting Boromir to always be strong and ended up putting burdens on him that he really wasn't suited to carry. Anyone who's expected to always be strong and perfect and never need help is being set up to fail, no matter how strong and good they are.

But my MC’s love interest and main male character is more an Aragorn type figure, with good qualities that both men and women can love. Aragorn was raised in Rivendell by Elrond and learned the good qualities, but also Elrond’s view that «men are weak..». I think Boromirs oath on his death changed Aragorn’s view on his people that they are worthy and therefore him aswell. He doubts his own strength in Rivendell when he says to Arwen that «the same weakness» flows in his weins. So after Boromirs death he takes on Boromirs arm bracers (with the markings of the White tree) and discovers he’s own purpose. Not to follow the Ringbearer, but saving the other hobbits and defending the people of Rohan and Gondor..

During Boromirs death, Aragon sure consoled him, but he didn't lie to make Boromir feel better in his last moments. Everything he said was the truth, he didn't know the strength of his own blood, but he promised he would do whatever he could to make sure Gondor survived, and he actually proceeded to do that. I think that is also a part of masculinity that differs from femininity, the masculine must always speak the truth, and Aragon did so, but he also wanted Boromir to hear that his death would not be in vain.

Still upsets me how Jackson destroyed his character. Pulled a very similar thing with Gandalf, as well. Overall, the movies were well-done but if you grew up knowing the real story in-and-out, it was very upsetting to see what they did to those two guys in particular.

Jesus Christ is the perfect role model for man, and the Bible explains why and how that's true. Talk to more Christians about it, and pray to God about it. Walking as Jesus Christ walked (i.e. obeying God's commandments, loving God, loving your neighbor) and having faith in Jesus Christ is the best way to be a masculine man. Don't idolize Aragorn or any being other than God. Aragorn isn't the Lord. Jesus Christ is the Lord, and is the Savior of all men and women and children who have faith in Him. Read the Bible and pray to God, so that you will learn the truth.

@bigjoegamer - If you got down off your high horse for a bit, and opened your eyes beyond the confines of your religious beliefs, you might just see that Aragorn does in fact display many of the qualities attributed to Jesus himself. Understanding what drives Aragorn, and how he uses his position, heritage, skills and experiences, might just lead some people to look at living a different way ... some may even find their way to religion. You will never convert anyone to Christianity by dictating what they should do, read or be ... but showing them how it's possible to be a better person may eventually lead them there, if that is what's right for them.

@@bigjoegamer I grew up in the Christian church, so I've read a good deal of the Bible and had years of being preached at, and no, Christianity is NOT for everyone! (Even saying this is deeply offensive to people of other religions, so there's one example of being on your high horse!) Yes, in terms of the reality of human existence, I do agree with the title, that Aragorn does represent the very best a human man can aspire to. He is not 'perfect', because he is human, but he is the 'perfect figure of masculinity' when it comes to being a mortal man. You are talking about someone deemed to be divine, even though he was inhabiting a human body at the time, so your comparison is redundant.

@@valbonney2575 "and no, Christianity is NOT for everyone!" Yes, Christianity IS for everyone; God desires ALL MEN to be saved to come to the knowledge of the truth . 1 Timothy 2:3-4 RSVCE "...God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" But not everyone is for Christianity or the truth; many are against them, and are offended by them. "Even saying this is deeply offensive to people of other religions, so there's one example of being on your high horse" How is saying something deeply offensive an example of me "being on my high horse"? You do know that the truth is offensive to many people, right? Many people hate the truth. Jesus Christ is the truth. John 15 talks about the world hating Jesus and those he chose out of the world. John 15:18-19 RSVCE “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." "even though he was inhabiting a human body at the time, so your comparison is redundant." Jesus and Aragorn are both masculine, and Jesus is still in the flesh right now (Acts 1:9-12). This all means the comparison is not redundant. Acts 1:9-12 RSVCE "And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
