Big manufacturers rarely open up their factory doors to the inquisitive eyes of journalists, and when they do, it is typically to show off the state-of-the-art nature of their manufacturing process. Recently, Arai opened its factories for a host of international journalists to show how their premium helmets, which are seen around the world on the grids of the pinnacle classes of each respective motorsport category, are as much the product of hands-on craftsmanship as they are technological advancements. The reasoning behind this openness was the desire to show why Arai believes they make the best motorcycle helmets in the world. The tour was enlightening for all who attended because Arai had the opportunity to show how its long-held core philosophy about head protection affects almost every step of the helmet construction process.

When people crash their motorcycles with an arai on... they don’t check if the bike is okay, they check if there are any scratches on the arai helmet.

Kind of true. Unfortunately at my last two crashes, I knew immediately the helmet was f...ed, because I landed pretty hard on my head. But the positive aspect is, that I was completely uninjured in the head area thanks to my Arai helmets. No headache, no blackout, nothing. 👍

Okay Arai.....figure out how to do all this for 200-300 dollars less please, and while you're at it, make a LONG OVAL helmet for us oddballs for $400-450.

@@Skinnymoss81 So you're saying the markup comes when they are imported, and the actual Japan market cost is more relative to something like a USA HJC or Scorpion cost?

Guys, do NOT spend another needless $300 just for the Arai name. You can get a great DOT certified helmet for $400-500. $800 is simply ridiculous and a sign of over inflation. They are a good helmet, but overpriced by hundreds. Same goes for Shoei.
@karpreece

The price is dictated by the nature of its construction. Artisan products always cost more. You say Needless, I say Essential.

@@karpreece If it is DOT certified, it is no stronger than any other helmet, you're paying 300 more for the name.

@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist 4 жыл бұрын
the777 That is incorrect. The certification means that it has passed minimum safety standards. The helmet manufacturer can choose to exceed them. I witnessed a helmet drop test at the Arai factory, and the numbers generated were significantly below those required by the Snell foundation.

@@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist How can you say that when just 10 years ago, top of the line Arai helmets were $550 - $600. The overall integrity of the helmet back then can still withstand the same forces. You are paying for graphics........whatever famous GP name is attached to it, etc. Look at the Regent X, Defiant X, Signet X, Quantum X, & Corsair X helmets. They are structurally all the same helmet. You pay hundreds more for the "Nicky Haden" name attached to it......note how the solid color of the same helmet is hundreds less. The same is true for Shoei. If you don't understand this, then you don't understand marketing. I wrecked at 45mph 15 years ago with a Shoei Jazz helmet that cost me $375. Scraped the paint off down to the fiberglass. Virtually nothing happened to the helmet. No helmet is going to get penetrated unless it's through the face shield. So why throw your money away?
@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist
@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist 4 жыл бұрын
the777 You missed the point of my response. So, I’ll write it again. The certification is to show that the helmet passes the minimum safety standards. That is true of both bargain helmets and premium ones. Helmet manufacturers are free to make their helmets provide better protection than just the standard. After touring the Arai factory, seeing he helmets constructed, and talking to the CEO, I believe the claim that Arai builds beyond the standards - a claimi saw backed up with Snell drop tests. Additionally, premium helmets offer better fit-and-finish plus more comfort features, like superior sound damping. If those don’t matter to you, don’t buy premium helmets. Finally, of course, graphics cost more. You can decide if they are worth the money. Sometimes I think they are, other times I don’t.

Drop down sun visors are too dangerous. I know a guy that crashed in a helmet with one of those. Front head impact. The gap in the construction allowed flex and the eps foam cracked and bucked in 2 places. Guy had a concussion for 6 months and couldn't work. I understand the convenience factor, and once upon a time I wanted a Shoei GT Air myself. But after that I'll stick with a transition sheild on my helmet.
