An ARAI Helmet, saved my life. In a Hare Scramble race in FL, I crashed with another rider & my helmet (head) slammed into his foot peg at such a force that the ARAI helmet actually has a huge golf ball size chip in it. (not a crack) The only helmet I wear & will ever trust my life to is ARAI. I have the helmet still in my MX trailer as a reminder. I have at least 10 ARAI helmets & & thank ARAI for saving my life. Plus a CTI knee brace saved me that day.

I had a Mick Doohan replica made by ARAI which I bought over 25 years ago. I was told that helmets only last for 5 years and to get a new one but could not give it up as it cost me 500 UK pounds back then and I like the style. Recently I had my first fall from a bike ever and I have been riding for over 30 years. Car vs Bike at 95 Km on the motorway. The front and the side of the helmet sustained some damage. more like large scratches. But I am alive and no head injuries. BUT I was wear jeans and tore up all my knees basically all the skin off as I hit the ground and rolled six times. The rest of me was ok due to good boots, jacket, gloves and my Mick Doohan replica ARAI RX-7XX. Thank you mister Hirotake Arai. What price would you pay for the safety of your brain?

Hi Chris, I too had a Mick Doohan Arai RX7XX replica. Loved that helmet so much, but eventually it wore out. I've had several other helmets since, including an RX7-GP that I have just replaced with......guess what.....an RX7-V Mick Doohan replica. Yes, exactly the same paint scheme. Happy days :-)

This was "THE" T-H-E best helmet video ive seen since before I bought my first Helmet 6 months ago. And Im one that before I make a buy. I research research, and then I research what I just researched. T-H-E BEST. And I do wish I had a sales agent as you guys spoke about with fitting a helmet. I have a 3XL long oval head and testing off the shelf was not as easy as other peoples looking to buy. I found one. But NEVER any talk about cheek or liner size options. I would now take a ride to your shop and trade in my current helmet. TO GET THE RIGHT ONE. Thanks Jay and Arai guy for this video!!! I may even share it with others. I did get a modular bing on the fence with a cruiser bike mentality. But knew a full helmet had more protection, and the Half was more open and traditional (since helmet laws started) And I went with the Flip face. GREAT VIDEO! again.

Every Time I get mad about surviving a crash and having to cough up for another Corsair I can just watch this now and smile. Three in one year was bad but I'm still at it. make a move. Buddy of mine is an EMT. came up on a bike wreck where two young kids crashed. Girl had on an Icon brainsaver, guy was wearing Arai. Guy was ALOC and talking to him, and sadly he gave his old junk made in china by a clothing marketer helmet to his now dead women. Think about that when you cheap out on some made in china cheap lid. They are a Helmet manufacturer and that's all they do. As much as the shield can frustrate me sometimes, they are also the most comfortable to ride in. Arai all the way man. Awesome and totally worth it man. Thanks Arai

+Scoty Duc Ati Every Crash is different and without knowing details, we can't conclude that if she had an ARAI or other top tier helmet that she would still be alive (or what condition of that icon helmet was when she went down). ..That being said , I would rather crash in any number of top tier racing helmets than an Icon if i knew my time was up.
@hvymtal8566
@hvymtal8566 8 жыл бұрын
+Scoty Duc Ati Being a firefighter EMT i can say for certain that after SNELL or ECE cert all the extra money does for you is comfort. I've treated someone going down in an RX-Q and a Icon Airmada in direct frontal head impacts around 50-ish impact speed (one hit a car going 30 in a school zone -- prosecuted -- other was highway rear-ender dismount only -- thank god -- due to emergency braking). They both were conscious throughout and were out of hospital in two weeks, though the cheekpad pull straps on the arai were nice. I do recommend buying ECE or SNELL helmets since they are independently tested. If you're going DOT only, only do it from large manufacturers like bell with much to lose if they skimp on testing, those who buy bargain-bin or non-acclaimed-manufacturer helmets will have much longer stays in a similar crash
@hvymtal8566
@hvymtal8566 7 жыл бұрын
iTheGeek I wear icon as a matter of fact. Its all about whether its authentic, fits correctly, prior impacts, accident variables, etc. You could be wearing a $2,000 custom fit carbon fiber Bell Star and it wouldn't make an end difference if the impact speed is 150 mph whereas a $120 DOT Helmet will survive a pretty good impact.
@sivonparansun
@sivonparansun 7 жыл бұрын
Statement of fact: Check sharp helmet tests; Arai does poorly considering how much their products cost (side impact is the Achilles heel). Everyone should consult the data for helmet purchases if its available. Personal statement: I will buy a bell race star before another arai at the same price-point because of new technology addressing rotational energy management which is leading factor for concussions.
@hvymtal8566
@hvymtal8566 7 жыл бұрын
chris s Same. I'm likely going to buy an HJC RPHA-11 as my next over an RX-Q for several reasons. I found the HJC no less comfortable, you don't have to pay $60 extra for a fucking visor (and it comes with a dark one in the box), it vents better than an RX-Q, you don't have to pay $100 more for graphics (and the graphics so far are better IMO) and even the price is significantly less for an ECE and DOT helmet. No it doesn't cert to snell but you will likely not get hassled on tracks over helmet certs once you point out that MotoGP allows helmets that are ECE but not snell :P

I guess I'm lucky because all the years I rode with a full face helment the size was correct. Even though I sweated all over the inside of it during the summer, the snug fit always made me feel safe, and anyway, the helmet innards in the better ones are washable and dry out very quickly. Another great, and possibly life saving video. Thanks Jay!

TL;DR Buy only from acclaimed manufacturers, measure circumference in inch *and* cm around the forehead and occipital ridge, and try on three distinctly *shaped* helmets like Signet-Q, RX-Q and Corsair if only as shape benchmarks As a firefighter who's seen and treated more than one head impact crash, I recommend you only buy from acclaimed manufacturers. If it's one you haven't heard of and it's DOT only, avoid it. Here's some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head that I know wouldn't skimp on testing and wouldn't skimp on construction Arai, Shoei, Bell, Icon (Only if it says ECE), Biltwell, Shark, AGV, Schuberth, Scorpion, HJC, Kabuto. There's likely some others but those are the ones off the top of my head, at least for street. You can add Fox, AFX, and Fly for sure off-road. Make sure you read the manufacturer literature on what they try to go for for their entire like (Icon goes for ECE, for example) before you buy a brand, because you may by buying an under-certified knock-off. Also, see what others have said about their crash resistance before you buy, if it's been on the market for more than one season. For measurement, ask for a tape measure both inch and cm and measure around the forehead and occipital ridge which is the widest part, then try on a Signet Q (Long Oval), an RX-Q (Intermediate Round), and one of their other helmets (Intermediate oval) or shoei's equivalents to determine your rough head shape. You might not be trying to buy one of those but they are good benchmarks to determine where to go next. Also don't mind the cheekpad tightness, that'll compress after some riding and become more comfortable

hvymtal Scratch ICON off your list for anything. The ICON brand is owned by Parts Unlimited and are only intended as a money maker for PU. They are very cheaply made, as is their clothing. Sure, they might make a few things well, but there is no hiding the cost cutting. I manage a motorcycle gear store and have for many years. If you truly value your head, buy the best. Arai and Shoei. If Arai is good enough for 200 mph professional circuit racers and Isle of Man competitors, then it should be good enough for the rest of us. They dont wear ICON. They wear Arai helmets and Dainese and Alpinestars leathers as the standard.
@hvymtal8566
@hvymtal8566 7 жыл бұрын
Also clarification: I recommend avoiding unknown DOT only because independent testing is not required by the DOT standard despite the fact that it is very intensive and encompassing whereas it is for ECE and Snell, both even more intensive. If it says ECE, it will work unless its defective, which is impossibly unlikely and your bills will get paid for you if it is

I love Arai helmets, I did measure my head before buying, mine is a small and fits very snuggly, at first I couldn't ride for more than an hour because it was too tight and my head started to ache, but I removed the peel-off extra padding (designed for that purpose) and now I can ride all day, the liner is super comfortable even if you put it on and off a dozen times in a day it won't chafe your skin. It also hugs from below your jaw unlike my other helmets.

I was a Arai, Shoei and AGV fitter where live and had customers from new riders to TT privateers and there certainly is a firm rule of thumb that you use when fitting and then you customise from there, helmets do expand overtime as they "wear in" and for many new riders this was a matter of convincing them that you have to be biting the inside of their cheeks when you have a well fitted helmet on, obviously a fully trained shop worker should be able to advise from there... Also whilst it was shown I actually was able to Inspect the Nakano Arlen ness suit after that 200 mph get off and the only thing that failed was the main zip which at those speeds and impacts was still remarkable, the rest of the suit had obvious scuffs but nothing major. That was just around the time that Kangaroo leather was being used and it certainly was a good selling point for the brand when they showed that crash at shows and had sample suits to try on.. IMO there is no one company that can been see as the best. If you mean "Best" as is protection for your head. They have tests done by other companies other then the DOT. So in my opinion a "Best helmet" Is one that has the highest rated crash test, bullet proof, gropping from a 20 story building without a headach, tested hemet would be the best. After that... Its just a matter of what fits you snug enough that you can have it on your head for more then 30 minutes and not lose blood flow to your brain. Too much room in that helmet. Is going to make a simple smack on the ground. Become 2-3 smacks as your head is also bouncing around inside. So look for the certifications the helmet has. Not a Brand name. And all three you asked about are all good makers.

Massive crash after front brake locked on racing motocross. Head first on to hardpack. I was out for the count but it could have been so much worse. Stayed in Arai ever since.

I've been wearing Arai for the past twelve years but their production is still a year behind due to shut downs from during the pandemic. I wasn't able to get a style I wanted so I decided to give AGV a chance. I'll share my thoughts on my channel next week

When I bought my Arai, I measured my head to get a ballpark size. Then I went down to a bike shop near me and tried on a few Arais. I knew that's the brand I wanted so alls I had to do now was get the shape and exact size correct. I didn't know if my head was round, oval, or what. What I did learn from my internet research was that a properly fitting helmet would fit very snug around my head but would not cause any pain or discomfort whatsoever. Almost like it's part of your head. Your head is not supposed to move around at all inside the helmet. When I found an Arai model that I felt fit me good (for me it was the Defiant), I wore it around the store for 30 minutes or so to see if it still felt good. It was quite snug on all sides. Cheeks, forehead, top of my head, you name it. All sides were pressing into my head very snugly to protect it, but even after 30 minutes there was not one ounce of pain or discomfort. When I also found out that you could buy pads in different thicknesses for an even more precise fit, I knew I had found the correct size and shape Arai helmet for me. I now have a full season in under my Arai (sadly we cannot ride year round here in the northeast) and I have no complaints whatsoever. The ventilation is excellent for a helmet and it still truly feels like a part of my head. People have asked me why I went through so much research and leg work to find a helmet and I always tell them "I only have two or three marbles rolling around upstairs so I should protect what little I got, no?".

Gotta love those Japanese corner men on the track. Yank his helmet off like it's no big deal, don't even worry about neck and back injury.

I'm still using my Arai XXL Quantum e from 1997. I'm now about to order my correct L Signet Q for my freakishly long oval head. I always had to go XXL before so my noggin would fit in the thing front to back, but it was always too loose on the sides and I always got the same pushing back on my face thing at speed. Arai's are a substantial percentage of the cost of a whole motorcycle, but also the most personal piece of safety gear you can own, so for me I've got to have the best even if it'll take a few payments.

You should really consider replacement every 4 or 5 years.

EthanKRETA Yeah, what I have a problem with is that would be about what I pay for insurance on the bike. As of right now I'll stretch it a few, still better than not wearing one.

Photo314159 "The most personal piece of safety gear ", but your helmet is from 1997? You aren't really the authority on giving advice on helmet safety, are you? It's like Ray Rice lecturing about not hitting women.

If you read what I wrote I didn't give advice to anybody. I simply stated what I do. My new Arai fits perfectly though, thanks for your concern.

Each company caters to specific head shapes. Have you tried a Schuberth? Not knocking Arai, but getting the best possible fit is important. I put one on and the sky opened up and little angels came down with harps and trumpets. Great fit.

I love my Arai, and I'm pretty sure it fits properly but would be nice to have an expert confirm. I just wish they'd do a transitions shield instead of that funky clear with a half-smoke thing.
