the neutral is grounded at the main so I was just wondering how you figured it would be shorted in the outlet box did you remove the neutral for that branch circuit before testing continuity?

No, in this scenario I worked it backwards. The homeowner was having intermittent tripping so I assumed it was a neutral barely touching the ground in the outlet box. After separating the neutrals at the first outlet box, I was able to eliminate having to open any more outlets boxes on that branch circuit & go straight to the panel. Even though the neutral is grounded at the main, that wouldn’t apply to an AFCI circuit because the neutral is bonded on the line side of the AFCI & not the load side. The load side of breaker neutral needs to fault to ground for "ground fault" trip feature to be the reason for the trip 👍🏽

I like your videos bro but unless the circuit you were working on was coming from a sub panel, the ground and neutral will always have continuity. Since theyre both bonded back at the main breaker. Or am I missing something obvious lol ?

In the video, I’m referring to the ground and neutral on an individual circuit. On a circuit with an arc fault breaker, the hot and neutral land directly on the load side of the breaker. If the neutral and ground are touching on that specific arc fault breaker circuit, it will trip that arc fault breaker as if you had a hot to neutral short or hot to ground short. The reason why I know this is because there has been plenty of times that I’ve replaced lights on an arc fault circuit. Instead of shutting the breaker off, I have just turned off the light switch. I replace the light and then turn the light switch back on. The light does not light up. I go to the panel and arc fault breaker tripped. Why? Because I touched the neutral and ground when replacing the light, causing the arc fault breaker to trip. Arc fault breakers can be tricky to troubleshoot. Hope that makes sense. 👍🏽

Question for you: I switched off the breaker for my oven range hood. Then I disconnected the wires to the range hood so I could take the hood out. I then had bare wires which prompted me to verify that there was no electricity in the wires just to be safe. My volt meter showed about 5V instead of 0V. What does this indicate?

It’s hard to say if I don’t have my own eyes on it but my first thoughts are. 1. Meter could be giving a false reading? Usually voltage that close to 0V, doesn’t concern me. Test it with a different meter if possible. 2. What’s the voltage on the wires with the breaker turned off from Hot to Ground and Hot to Neutral? 3. What’s the voltage on the wires with the wires disconnected from the breaker from Hot to Ground and Hot to Neutral? Those 3 things will help you narrow down your question. Good luck! 👍🏽

I've been a commercial electrician for 15 years now. Always thought about going into residential but I imagine dealing with the customers is probably 50% of the work. What's it like?

I’ve been in the trade 9 years. I’ve never done new construction, always service work. Started with industrial, then moved to commercial/residential now I’m back in industrial. Didn’t like having to create a huge material list for such a small job & having to sell the jobs to customers. With industrial, they need the work asap so the price doesn’t matter. You have to deal with less people & get to work on my difficult things. To me it’s better because I get to figure out problems everyday & there is a satisfaction when you fix it 👍🏽
