"What if I start from scratch, what if I take this apart and remake it, what happens if I just reevaluate this? By doing that I feel like I've discovered so many amazing things and possibilities in things that people really deem as useless."
For Arc'teryx Ambassador, Nicole McLaughlin - waste is not just a consequence of our unquenchable thirst for new products, it's an opportunity. A chance for us to create something useful out of something useless. A new life. A circular economy - by design.

Art Director: James Kim

Hope they release the panel discussion and the unedited footage of Nicole's interview; I could watch an extended version of this. Nicole is bringing in a new perspective on design, function, and sustainability. As an environmental engineer, I like seeing the new ways that creative people produce things out of "nothing".

Missed opportunity. I don't really understand the thesis of this work. she opens by saying the onus should not be on individuals to fix climate change, but then proceeds to preach the values of upcycling (which is inherently an individualized approach to dealing with overconsumption). What is Arc'teryx doing as a corporation with actual power to change overconsumption besides preaching more consumption via the aesthetics of upcycling and putting the onus back on the individual to act?

Humans are not a sustainable species. We do not contribute to natural, regenerative ecosystems. We expand, colonise and consume resources and bring completely alien materials into natural places that cannot repair themselves; we are outside of the 'circle of life' as reflected every other (non-parasitic) species. The reason why the video is jibberish is because the notion of 'sustainable humanity' is a paradox. You don't want to knock down your house and return the land to the organisms which thrived before your arrival. You do not want to throw your smartphone away despite humans demonstrating over thousands of years that mobile phones are superfluous to human flourishing. 'Up-cycling is a performative nonsense in anything other than a 'creative' pursuit...( Even the word 'creative' is a euphemism for consumption; what exactly do humans create without materials taken from the environment?)

Yup, that’s totally the way we all go to save the planet, companies give you really expensive clothing most people cannot afford and then you cut them up and make a pair of shorts or your own back pack! Coz that’s how we solve a problem like mass overproduction or general waste in the clothing industry.

@@jonrandall4005 Yea I agree, since most of the stuff is very usable. None of the gear seen on her posts or on this video is really unusable in it's current state. I feel like it would be just fine if she just presented it as a art project not sustainable recycling / upcycling.

It is unfair to put it on individuals, but it sells more stuff. It's nice to see some responsible companies out there but corporate marketing is smarter than the average person. I must be missing something. So now we have to pay her salary and with that comes company overhead that translates into higher consumer cost. All these "workshops" to let people cut up old jackets aren't free and I am sure it will be passed down to the consumer. Eventually your $500 jacket will be $600 then $700 an so on. So what are we getting from this as the end user? Some one off hand bags made out of scrap so some millennials can rock the dead bird as a fashion statement?????
